Hands
1. Do they keep their nails short or long?
1a. Do they keep them this length out of preference or practicality (such as for their line of work)?
2. How often, if ever, do they get/do a manicure? Is it simple maintenance, or do they get acrylics?
2a. If they are the type to get their nails done often, what style do they typically choose?
2b. If they get their nails done rarely, how difficult do they find it to wear fake nails?
2c. If they never get a manicure, is this due to complete disinterest, lack of resources, or forgetfulness?
3. Are your oc's hands rough or smooth?
3a. Do they moisturize often? If so, what sort of moisturizer do they use? Do they have a full skincare routine?
3b. If your oc's hands are often dry, is this natural, related to their health, or do they dry out from some kind of occupational/hobby-related cause? Do they have calluses?
4. Do your ocs have any disability/chronic condition that affects their hands? (such as pain, shakiness, frequent dislocations, etc.)
4a. If so, what, if any, mobility/support aids do they use to help with that? How often does their condition impact them from day-to-day?
5. How thoroughly/frequently do they wash their hands? How do they feel about cleanliness in general?
5a. If they are in a situation in which hand-washing is difficult, say due to a lack of resources, how do they proceed? Are they used to these conditions?
Hair
1. How often do they wash or comb their hair?
1a. If excessive washing or brushing would damage their hair, what style do they prefer to keep it in? How often does it require maintenance?
1b. How dedicated are they to tending to their hair? Do they use any products to maintain or heal texture? Are they unbothered by split-ends or an uneven appearance?
2. If they have hair long enough to arrange, do they typically keep it up or down?
2a. Does it depend on where they are? (ex: it's down at home but tied up/covered when they go out?
2b. If they prefer to keep their hair tied up, do they do this for practical reasons or because they prefer the way it looks, or some other reason?
3. Do they prefer their hair short or long? Do they keep it completely shaven? Why?
3a. How often do they trim or cut their hair? Is it something they make time for every week or two, or do they regularly go several months or more without having it cut?
3b. Do they see someone to have their hair touched up, or do they do it themselves? If someone else does it, who?
3b. (cont.) If someone else does their hair, is the character particular about who does this for them? What are they particular about?
4. Do any of your OCs wear wigs or hair extensions? Do they dye their hair?
4a. Do they gravitate more towards natural or unnatural colors? Do they have a signature color?
4b. How often do they wear wigs or dye their hair? Is it occasional or an everyday thing (or, in the case of dye, something they top-up regularly)?
5. If your OC's have facial hair, how do they prefer to keep it?
5a. If they prefer being clean-shaven, does stubble bother them?
5b. How often, in general, do they shave? Is there a point/length or a time of year at which their facial hair begins to irritate them?
5c. If they do not naturally grow facial hair but like the look of it on them, how do they recreate the look?
6. If your OCs have body hair, how do they prefer to keep it?
6a. If they remove this hair, what is their preferred method? Do they typically remove all of it, or leave some as is/trimmed?
6a. (cont.) Whether they keep or remove the hair, what is their reason? Is it a personal preference, a societal or occupational expectation, both/neither?
Skin
1. What products, if any, does your oc use on their skin? Do they have a multi-step routine, or is soap the most they want/are able to use?
1a. If they are the type to worry about some facet of their skin's appearance, when did that begin? What do they prioritize most, and what led them to care about it?
1b. If they once worried about those things but no longer do, what led them to stop fixating on it? How do they feel now?
2. How often, if ever, do they fully submerge themselves in water?
2a. Are they typically bathing or just going for a swim when they do this?
3. Do they have any chronic skin conditions? If so, how does this impact them? Do they receive any medical treatment for it?
4. Does your OC take any particular precautions when going out in the sun?
4a. What climate/locale do they usually live in?
4b. How often do they go outside in general?
4c. If unable to go outdoors, do they take any supplements to compensate for a lack of sunlight?
5. Does this OC wear any fragrances, such as deodorants, perfumes, colognes, etc.? If so, what scents do they gravitate towards?
5a. Are there any scents they find appealing on others moreso than themselves?
5b. Are there any scents they particularly dislike?
6. How much, if any, makeup does your OC typically wear?
6a. Are there any makeup products they consider essential? Do they wear them even when they are by themselves all day?
6b. At what age did they begin wearing makeup? At what age did they begin wearing it regularly?
6c. If they do not wear makeup, do they have any particular opinions on it? Did they never wear it, or is it something they moved away from?
6d. If makeup is something they only wear on Special Occasions, what constitutes a Special Occasion for them, and what sort of look do they go for? Is it something they choose for themself or is it chosen for them (ex: it's applied by a team at their work)?
1. What were the most formative experiences in your OC's early childhood?
1a. Was it a single highly impactful moment, or a prolonged period of circumstance (stable or otherwise) that gave them their earliest impression of the world they live in and the people in it?
2. Has this perception changed or remained more or less the same?
2a. If it has remained the same, what would it take to alter this character's perception?
2b. If it has changed, when did they start thinking differently, and what happened to cause this? Do they feel they have changed for the worse, or for the better?
2c. Additionally, how has their behaviour changed alongside the shift in their perception? Do they decide to act the same as they always have, or did something change in their demeanor as well? Do any of the other characters notice?
I’ll be honest, I’m mostly writing this because I’m trying to come up with codex entries for my ocs and this gives me a good way to think about what kinds there are. but hey, reblog, ask for a number and an OC? or add your own. whatever floats your boat. written with Dragon Age OCs in mind.
