recently (as in within the past week), i've been getting into tatting. it's a semiobscure fiber art where you use either a shuttle or a needle to create a durable lace through the creation primarily of many, many cow hitch knots. it's kinda been dying out in the US for quite some time, mostly due to lack of demand. lace isn't nearly as popular as it once was (for decorating the edges of garments, linens, etc.), and for the applications where it is still desirable, there are more readily scalable lacemaking methods. that kinda leaves tatting in this weird, dead zone as a relic of the past; it's something that my grandma's grandma did. in spite of this, there still exists a tatting community for the niche that it fills as a recreational fiber art, akin to crocheting and knitting. it's almost kinda like their MUCH less popular cousin. supplies are still readily available to be ordered online, and you can find patterns galore.

i learned about tatting probably a couple of months ago, from a young man on the Short Form Content Algorithm around my age who tats, and he remarks on just how bizarre it is for someone under retirement age to be doing this lacemaking. i was at an antique store earlier today, and the elderly storeowners were amazed that somebody my age has taken up this craft. despite its obscurity and the difficulty which many associate it with, i've actually found it to be easier for me than knitting or crocheting, and after only a few days of practice my stitches are starting to look halfway decent! admittedly, there's a bit of a lower ceiling to what you can create with tatting, and god DAMN is it a timesink, but the intricacy of the more complicated designs is still astounding, and finishing off a project still gives that beautiful spike of satisfaction injected directly into my brain wrinkles.

i also wish to call to attention the miracle that is the internet for allowing this skill to carry on. if i had lived 150 years ago, i would have had to know someone who tatted to teach me the craft, and i could only inherit whatever knowledge they had inherited from their forebearers. of course, this is not to discount the efficacy of passing knowledge down from person to person; we've only made it this far as a humanity because of that strategy. but, more, the information superhighway has given me a way to learn and begin to refine this craft despite the fact that i have never interacted with another person who tats. lacemaking is an incredibly beautiful and rich subset of textile arts; to think that people devoted their lives to refining this craft, journeymen and masters and mentors and more, putting in thousands of hours into these intricate designs, i'm more than happy to be an asterisk on the subtext of a footnote in the grand scheme of things, it's so lovely to get to learn a craft :]
