Cuilang looked at her with wide eyes. She had no idea if he’d heard her. “I’m—I’m going to count to three. I need you to breathe until I finish counting. Like this,” at that she took one slow deliberate breath, counting, “One, two, three.”

Cuilang drew in one long shaky breath and exhaled as Kaguya directed him. Then again. And again. Until his desperate, ragged breaths smoothed into something resembling a normal breathing rate. Kaguya rubbed one hand in what she hoped were soothing circles against his arm.

As he calmed down, he buried his face in the crook of her neck. She could feel tears, hot and wet against her bare skin. Minutes passed, silence broken only by the occasional rattling breath. Kaguya let his hand fall from her chest so she could wrap him in both her arms. Soft, real, red hair tickled her nose. Now, as the fear began to subside, the situation was beginning to sink in.
