it’s like sjmess only watched the got show and tried to unsuccesfully copy paste dany as her own character and a self-insert, looking past the subtleties of dany’s character and layers of her personality and of course, the effing narrative and how it portrays dany… oh..
i personally adore dany as a character, yet neither i nor bazillions of other dany fans go around screaming dany is perfect, she can do any wrong, she is the speshulest of all.. we acknowledge her mistakes, and some of us were really eager to see dany’s decent into madness and her turning into a mad queen instead of the obvious choice, cersei.. and even if that doesn’t happen, most importantly, dany is morally grey and the narrative acknowledges that, whereas in tog, whatever alien does is deemed as an act of a deity and other characters’ sole purpose is to worship the ground she walks on..
I think, with Dany, GRRM wanted to show that a good person doesn’t necessarily make a good king, and for a king, it is almost just as difficult to keep both his allies and his enemies at bay. Throughout ADWD Dany struggles to mantain the peace in Meereen with any cost and some of the prices she has to pay are hard and cost her the trust and the loyalty of her subduers.
I love Dany too, alongside Tyrion, Jaime and Jon, but I know she is far from perfect (she is so young in the books, really) and I think that even in the books there are hints of her slowly descent into madness.
Aragorn became King at the end of Lotr and he was 88 yo at that point. Starting from the age of 20 (meaning that for no less than almost 70 years), he traveled near and far in Middle-Earth, learning to be a king, to make his allies follow him and to understand his people’s needs. He doesn’t show up in Gondor saying: “Yo, how you doing, Imma be your king and you must obey bc I am the last in Isildur’s line and I must be King”. He earned that title by struggling for 60 years and winning the war and establishing alliances. Tolkien didn’t have Aragorn become king just because.
As for Alien, everyone kisses the ground she walks on bc I think SJM is not able to see her fave self-insert facing the real struggle that comes with a someone’s decision to make himself a king.
i totally agree with everything you said. I wouldn’t be bothered if alien became queen after years of struggling, learning about other cultures, learning how to be a monarch, court handling stuff, legislation, etc. instead of that, we are givena queen with no experience and we are supposed to believe that just because it is her birthright she is destined to be a queen.. this can also show our world and the position of privilege.. if a kid’s parents, for example, and their ancestors all attended Cambridge, the kid has greater chances of getting into the prestige society even if they don’t deserve it (didn’t study enough, no effort, take everything for granted) over a “normal” kid who studied and prepared for it.. it’s that privilege that allows those kids to be lazy, but it is that same privilege that persuades society that somehow those same traits in an unprivileged kid make him/her/they undesirable.. it’s almost as if whatever privileged kids do is deemed excellent, however when it comes to unprivileg kids, the society expects nothing short of perfection..
I agree with everything you said and that makes me think of another issue in SJM’s books. Almost every character in her books is either magically blessed, heir to some God or, in Fayrug’s case, she had sex with the proper man at the proper time and boom - allmighty High Lady of the Night Court. None of them earned the position of power they got. Just like the kids coming from privileged families of whom you’ve spoken, they reached the top….either thanks to their birthright, their magic (which I still don’t understand bc SJM’s magic system is just….ilogical????) or bc they can sexually please a powerful high lord that will make them high lady. There is no role model in her books, no ultimate symbol of feminism, just a bunch of unrealisticay all powerful dudes that seems some characters in a PC role-playing game tbh
exactly, exactly, i completely agree. and the thing is, this is not just her fault. almost 90% of fantasy books have a similar skeleton, and this creates a much bigger problem in our real lives because since our childhood, we read these books in which the privileged stay privileged, and the marginalized or minorities are killed off, used, manipulated, sacrificed, pittied and “protected” by the privileged ones. the ending is the same, the “white, privileged boy/girl destined for greatness ends up *gasp* being great, while everyone is just a side character that can’t come close to this ideal. these characters are there to make the main char laugh, to be the sacrificial lamb and to just exist in the background, in the shadow of the almighty main char.. additionally, these books have a narrative glorifying this behaviour, so when we have generations of kids all grown up now, intolerant and preposterous, believing the world owes them something, i think we can pont to at least one reason behind this..
Exactly. As you said, this is not only SJM’s case. As much as I like Harry Potter (and I really like and I am totally sorry if I offense HP stans), the series shares the same problem. Harry Potter is the chosen one, because of a prophecy talking about a boy born at the end of July. Basically none of the rest of the characters has a personality and his own journey outside Harry’s quest. As much as I adore Hermione and Ron, their story revolves around Harry. And other characters such as Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius, Hagrid (which I love, I adore them all, don’t get me wrong) are in the story just because Harry’s plotline demands it.
However, although I am sure SJM wanted her MC to be a mix of Daenerys Targaryen and Harry, comparing Harry to Alien is an insult to both Harry and JKR (not to mention that EoS is basically Deathly Hallows with Aelin instead of Harry) .
At least, Harry was likeable and he indeed was willing to sacrifice himself for the rest of other
But, as you said, children read these books and they will believe that your succes shall come only if you are born into right family or destined for greatness.
I’m begging you all to watch this video

RED QUEEN AESTHETICS: Gisa Barrow
“Gisa. Wake up.” I do not whisper. The girl sleeps like the dead. “Gisa.” She shifts and groans into her pillow. “Sometimes I want to kill you,” she grumbles. “How sweet. Now wake up!” Her eyes are still closed when I pounce, landing on her like a giant cat.

Elane POV
I followed Evangeline in the twilight’s dusk, her silver hair, now loose, shining like a beacon. Quickly, she exited the Main Plaza and entered the First Street with the most exquisite shops in Ascendant. Eve was the better athlete, and while I wasn’t a bad one myself, I was glad I wore flat heels today, to keep up with her easier. I pulled the seams of my open coat together, not wasting time on closing it. I wondered if Eve wanted me to chase her, or if she was exhausted after her training session, and whether the latter meant she intended to burn off all the nervous energy that remained in her.

“It’s not something you can control, Mare”…”We can’t choose who we love. I wish, more than anything that we could”
kilorn x mare, thief and fish boy
Kilorn is such a wonderful character that I feel needs more appreciation. He has always been there for Mare, even after being rejected romantically. He didn’t treat her any differently and continued to be her best friend. He is the best.

Amren's Lie and the Explicit Tyranny of the Night Court
Cross posting from Reddit, but... during the intervention, Nesta points out that she is not a citizen of the Night Court — that they have no right to force an ultimatum upon her as someone who isn't a citizen. The fact that they *could* do this to a citizen is still problematic, but that's beside the point.
Amren then pulls out a book and cites a law wherein non-citizens who accept the position of Emissary of the Night Court confers Citizenship of the Night Court so long as they remain Emissary. Let's also ignore the fact that Nesta could just resign whenever she wants, and therefore wouldn't be a citizen as per Amren's wording.
At the end of this scene, Cassian asks about the law and... Amren just tells us that she lied. Like, she made up the law. She just lied straight to Nesta's face. Worse, she is Second to the High Lord. She is effectively the *maior palatii* of the Night Court, the Chancellor. Her authority is only second to the High Lord (and Lady). In this scene, she is explicitly speaking *on behalf* of Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court. Ergo, the government of the Night Court just *lied to a refugee* in order to justify said refugee's institutionalisation.
Like, the fact that she had to lie is just so telling. If this fact wasn't important, why lie about it? Nesta could've dropped the "I'm not a member of this Court" line, and Amren could've just dismissed it out of hand had it not mattered. Amren could've just declared her a citizen if that was possible, skipping the whole situation entirely. Instead, Amren chose to lie, to lie in such a way that a quick flick through a book would've unravelled the whole thing, so the fact that Nesta *isn't* a citizen must actually *means* something, and the Night Court are choosing to purposefully infringe upon whatever protections a refugee or non-citizen has.
That's tyranny. Like, bold-faced tyranny. Explicit tyranny. This goes beyond a family's intervention and straight into the abuse of power a government is performing against a refugee. And it just gets ignored. Fuckin' wild.
Ive thought about concept of citizenship before and have a head canon For Fun:
Elain and Nesta (and maybe Feyre, depending) exist in a legal grey area. They were human and thus should be under human protection/jurisdiction. Or, they were made in Hybern and are thus Hybern citizens, or they've taken refuge in Prythian and are thus under the protection of anyone willing to take them. What if Vassa feels that Elain and Nesta are hers and has been asking to have them returned but Rhys (and Amren) know how powerful they are (plus Nestas weapons that he took) and are refusing to give them up. Elain and Nesta never asked or chose to go to Night, they were taken by Feyre’s spouse. He has no claim on them.
All this say, Rhys and Amren are taking advantage of their presumed statelessness even though they could have other options. A lot of other options. And then they twist the knife by guilting Nesta and Elain to be grateful for the effort.
Girl, run.
I've thought about this a bit too, and for the hybern au they're definitely worse off:
All of the Archerons are very much a legal gray area and while humans can have citizenship in many of the courts (spring, dawn, day in particular) the problem lies in the fact the sisters for most fae nations aren't legally considered people.
Feyre is still a legal citizen of the spring court and she has permanent residence in night through being mated to rhysand. She doesn't have citizenship in night and feyre may or may not have bargained away her personhood to rhysand (and she can't get it back).
Nesta and elain are pronounced dead in the human lands (which is why they can't access their fortune) and are considered to be magical objects in the ownership of hybern (this later just becomes hybernian citizenship) through their personhood being bargained away. Rhysand is also taking advantage of the fact that the sisters are technically magical objects to claim their residence in night to prevent scrutiny from the other courts and to limit the viable options of asylum from anywhere else. After all, an weapon cannot request sanctuary.
None of the sisters know about this and are actively prevented from understanding the situation (especially through lying and gaslighting) in order to keep all three of them in night. Run.

Bride of the Destroyer: Kai OC, Medea 💚
She’s still in development. And yes, she's essentially if Glinda and Elphaba had a baby.

Video Games that make you feel like you’re in a Fairytale
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
There will be a LOT of Dragon Quest titles on this list so be prepared. But yeah this is one of the most beloved games in the entire Dragon Quest series. And while it is not my personal favourite (The title goes to Dragon Quest IX) it has UNDENIABLE fairy tale vibes. From the bright and colourful world to the story. This is a must-experience JRPG. The story follows the nameless protagonist who works as a guard at the palace of the Kingdom of Trodain. But one day the former palace jester curses the king and turns him into a troll and his daughter, princess Medea, into a horse and turns everyone inside the palace into plants (except for the hero who manages to barely evade the curse) So now with the help of the headstron mage Jessica, the priest Angelo and the former thief Yangus he travels the lands to find a way to break the curse. With an amazing cast of character and a fantastic love story between the hero and Medea as well as some pretty dark moments scattered throughout, this game gives me the same vibes as an old disney princess movie. Some sweet moments, funny ones, scary ones but in the end you know you will get a happy end.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the white Witch
A young boy needs to travel to a fantasy world to rescue his mom. Listen this game has been praised to the high heavens by everyone under the sun and for GOOD REASONS! Like i doubt i could add anythin
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky
This game means EVERYTHING to me. it was my very first JRPG ever and it came to me during a time of deep mental anguish and a spiritual crisis. You play as an angel (or Celestrian as the game calls them) who has fallen from heaven and has lost his halo and wings and must now travel the world, doing good deeds to find a way back to your home up in the sky. The world, as always in dragon quest is VIBRANT and LIVELY, with amazing characters and is accompanied by Akira Toriyama's (Who created the Monster and Character Art for all Dragon Quest games up until his death last year) art style just gives this game such fantastic vibes.
Dragon Quest V: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Me? Obsessed with Dragon Quest? Whatever gave you THAT idea! Jokes aside DQV is widely regarded as the best one in the series and for good reasons. It was highly innovative when it first came out and still holds up rather well. You play as the nameless hero and follow him throughout his life starting as a child, watch him get married, have kids and also having to rescue his wife from the main villain. If you want some classic JRPG goodness, I HIGHLY recommend giving this one a try.
Final Fantasy IX
I know this is a bit of an unusual pick and a lot of people do not like this entry in the franchise as it abandons the Futuristic Technology-Fantasy fusion the franchise is usually known for in favour of a high fantasy adventure alongside a more chibi-style artstyle instead of the usual anime artstyle but regardless of all that, this is my favourite FF game of all time. And the first two acts of the game feel so much like a fairytale retelling. The princess that willingly lets herself get kidnapped by a plucky thief to escape her wicked mother and things spiralling from there. I cannot reccomend this game enough
Fantasy Life (3DS)
Now is the perfect time to get into Fantasy Life with a brand new FL Game having just released this month. It’s peak cozy vibes set in a beautiful fantasy setting and an equally beautiful story to go along with it. I have not yet played the new FL game but if it’s anything like the original on the 3DS i can guarantee it will be worth every penny.
Born of Bread
My favourite Indie Game of all time. I will openly admit that only the first city in the game is a “typical” fairytale style story but even so it’s very much worth it. It’s a Paper Mario inspired Turn Based RPG where you play as Loaf, a little Bread Golum who was accidentally created by Papa Baker. But not long after Loaf’s birth Papa Baker get accused of plotting a crime most foul against the queen of the land (Witchcraft and ruining the Queen’s dinner). So now Loaf, alongside his friends, must travel the lands to prove his father is innocent.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Yes, another DQ title but trust me, if the previous DQ Games in this list did not sound like smt you’d enjoy, I can guarantee you WILL fall in love with this one. It’s in my opinion the creme de la creme of a “Hero’s Journey” type plot and has by far my favourite cast of characters in the entire Franchise. You play as the Luminary, the lost prince of a long forgotten kingdom who must journey to rid the world from darkness. However along his journey he is perpetually demonised and faced with persecution. Or to put it simply you play as Gay Jesus and the government wants to see you executed. It is also available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PS4/PS5. So it is one of the DQ titles that’s the most easiest to acquire for modern gamers without having to rely on emulation or having to sell a kidney for a physical copy.
Little Goody Two Shoes
I mean if you have been keeping up with the Indie Game Scene at all in the past few years there is NO WAY you haven’t at least stumbled across this game at some point. And like let me tell you, you cannot get more Fairytale core than this. Unfortunately however the fairytale in question is german. You play as Elise, a girl trying to escape her mundane life in a little village but she must face several challenges and monsters in order to do so. Also you can be a lesbian in this game if you so wish. So clearly it’s a 10/10.
