Chapter 7

The day Melody’s article was published she was taken out by Bobbi to celebrate.  It felt amazing to see her words on the glossy pages of a luxury lifestyle magazine.  The photos Peter had taken looked so good, being bracketed by her words.  She felt like she’d made it.  However, even that feeling didn’t cover the fact that she was still nervous about Steve reading it.

They had parted on really good terms about a month before the piece was published.  Every time they were together felt more comfortable and more flirtatious than the last.  Steve slowly opened up to her, becoming more comfortable and more real.  It was exciting to get to know Steve’s more playful flirtatious side, but it also felt like a privilege.  It was something that was private and meant just for her.  She kept those special pieces of him minimal in the article, holding onto it for herself.

Chapter 1

It was the dream life.  An apartment on the upper west side of New York, located in a beautiful old brownstone.  A career in journalism.  Getting to interview an actual Avenger.  When Melody Danes boiled down her life to its bones, it was exactly how she had planned it out.

Of course, that did ignore some pretty glaring oversights.  Like how she actually had two jobs.  The journalist position was an underpaid internship that barely covered food let alone rent and bills.  Or that the internship was with the Daily Bugle, one of the most despicable publications in the world, with the worst boss she had ever worked for.  Or how she lived with her cousin in a one-bedroom apartment, because neither of them could afford anything bigger in the city - even with Bobbi working three jobs.  Something that left Melody relegated to a bed that was walled off from the rest of the living room with bamboo screens, while Bobbi got the bedroom because she paid the bigger portion of the rent.  Or the fact that the apartment itself was a shit hole that had unreliable plumbing, heat, and super to fix anything.

Getting to know Steve Rogers again was much easier than the first time around.  The thing was, in the version of Steve you had known, he was still in there.  It was just that before everything had been so extreme.  You’d had to walk on eggshells around him, not sure if saying or doing something would set off his anger or his sex drive.

Now those extremes were smoothed off.  He could still be very serious.  He could still give you a look that made you feel like a kid who had just gotten in trouble with their father, but you weren’t scared that you were going to ignite something dangerous in him.  More than that, when he was very serious or not playing around with you or the others, you felt safe to tease him about it.

Steve took one last look at himself in the mirror.  He’d dressed up.  A gunmetal three-piece suit with a pale blue tie to bring out his eyes. It was probably the most formally he’d ever dressed to go out on a date.  Dating in general had been limited.  He and Bucky had gone on the odd double date.  He’d gone out for drinks with Sam.  He’d taken Sharon out to dinner and dancing a few times.  But no date had been particularly formal or fancy.  And since becoming part of a rather large polycule, dating had been taken right off the table.

33. Wanda

Wanda sat in the back of the jet with the trainees completely on edge.  Chaos magic was crackling just under her skin, making her feel like an exposed wire.  She had known there was something wrong with Steve since they’d come back from the mission.  Everyone did, but his thought patterns had been altered.  Almost like there was something in him changing who he was.  Everyone was calling it PTSD and said he was working on it, so she just let herself believe that was all it was, because what else could it be?

She felt guilty now because whatever was going on with Steve was much bigger than simply PTSD and she’d allowed people to dismiss her when she’d tried to warn them.  Now she was on the way to try to find him with Clint and a bunch of unseasoned rookies and the recruit that had initiated this off-book rescue mission was the one in a relationship with six of her teammates, including Clint.

Your thighs felt like they were burning and your lungs ached with every breath in.  It had felt like the circuits had been going for hours, but truthfully it was more likely that where most of the time the circuit was set out to do a slightly easier set followed by a harder one, this time it was just grueling set after grueling set.

“Have you noticed that these have been getting progressively harder to get through every week?” Zuri said.  Zuri and Jordan were always the ones that excelled at the morning circuits.  Physical fitness was important to both of them, and they trained heavily outside of work too.  They were coping better than the rest of the group but when Zuri spoke, it was through labored breathing.  Sweat was running down her face and she had stained huge patches on her compression shirt.

15. Steve

Steve’s awareness had narrowed down to one thing.  Pain.  It radiated through him so that he couldn’t pinpoint one single source.  His thoughts felt foggy and slow like each one had to travel through molasses before he became aware of it, and then was just drowned out by the pain he was in.

He tried to focus.

He was sitting up, he knew that.  Whatever he was sitting on was cold and hard, and each piece was thick.  Something was pressing into his arms at the forearm and bicep, as well as in his thighs and shins.  When he tried to move they stayed static, keeping him in place.

9. Steve

Steve ached in places he hadn’t felt for a long time.  Today had been a long day of training with Tony and Wanda and they had not gone easy on him.  They were going out on a mission together tomorrow to follow up on some intel on a H.Y.D.R.A. cell operating out of a small town in Texas.  He wasn’t looking forward to it at all if he was honest with himself.  Not that he ever loved his role as Captain America.  It was a duty he felt obligated to perform because he’d never be able to live with himself if things went bad and he could have done something to stop them.

Being Captain America always ate into his personal life, but since he’d agreed to form the polycule with Sharon, Bucky, Sam, Natasha, and Clint he’d been getting more and more time to just be Steve Rogers.  He appreciated that more than he could express and now that the group was bringing in another person, he had to go out for god knows how long because some people couldn’t just let others live their lives peacefully.

Summary: You’ve spent your life working for someone else. You watch their back, you protect them, but you’re left feeling empty and unfulfilled at the end of the day. What happens when a freak accident transports you to a different dimension, very nearly identical to your own?

“Are they actually alive?” Tony asks.

Steve inches closer and faintly hears the body whimper.

“For now.”

“Christ, that’s gotta be painful.”

Tony rolls his eyes and gestures to a set of drawers. “Third down, there’s fresh sheets. Grab one.”

“You keep sheets in the lab?”

“Sheets, drop cloths, same thing at the end of the day. Doesn’t matter, just grab one.”

1. Tony Stark literally never sleeps.

2. Thor loves to address women as “Lady (name)”. No one knows when he’s coming or going but Stark keeps a room ready for him at all times, regardless.

3. The only degree Bruce actually puts into use is his M.D.

4. Clint not only loves traveling through the vents but he continues to do so despite constantly falling through the ceiling.

5. Part of Natasha’s Red Room training included how to dress her friends for Stark’s parties.

6. No matter what sexuality Steve tries he still has no game.

7. If you are ever recruited, Wanda will be your first and greatest friend.

8. Sam knows everything about everyone.

9. Vision has reverted to Jarvis in physical form.

10. Just be aware that the first time Bucky says two words to you it means he wants to throw you into the nearest supply closet and bang your brains out. This will then happen within 24 hrs.

The sound of crying came through the intercom system, pulling me out of the deep sleep I was in.  We were getting used to being woken by the sounds of the babies’ cries.  Riley had been home for two weeks now, and we had all been fumbling our way through parenting an infant together.

She was a very healthy and happy baby.  It was why she came home before Pietro and she’d been like the soft opening to parenting for us.  She didn’t cry a lot and tended to just make soft cooing sounds and little grunts to let us know she wanted something.  It was only really waking up and if she got very hungry that we heard her cry.  She was happy to be passed around the group and often during the day, she didn’t get put down at all.  She’d just be carried about and passed around from one of us to the next, like a puppy at an elementary school.

Chapter 1: Sam

Sam moved his napkin from the table to his lap and back to the table again.  The restaurant was too nice.  The tables were all dark shining hardwood and the light fittings all looked a mixture of space-age and rustic in a  way that shouldn’t work, but somehow did. The table had been set with multiple glasses and multiple forks. Even the napkin itself spoke of how expensive this place was - the thread count was higher than the ones on his sheets.

He wasn’t uncomfortable because of how expensive it was.  Sure he grew up poor and preferred eating the kinds of comfort food he grew up on instead of this pretentious shit that cost a fortune for the tiny portion that would end up on the plate.  But he was famous and he was elite.  He’d been to his fair share of galas and celebratory dinners. He knew how to fit in with the rich.  He knew which fork was for which course, he’d even used those tongs meant to hold snail shells more than once.  He knew how to pretend to be interested in topics that he didn’t care about.   He also knew how to delicately move the conversation to ones that he did care about.  He didn’t love this kind of restaurant, but he could go undetected.
