do any of my fellow book readers think about the fact that the long game more or less said “yeah, it’s really bad that ilya:
doesn’t really have any of his own friends or confidants
has dead parents, no relationship with brother, and is basically unable to return to his home country
can only have a fluent conversation in his native tongue with his therapist (since he skipped town and hasn’t spoken to his other and kind of only russian friend since)
gave up an enviable leadership position on a cup winning team in a hockey town to sign with a team whose games, canonically, nobody attends
is also outed against his will
has coping mechanisms - smoking, eating junk food, driving fast cars, etc. - that are all vaguely self-destructive
is severely depressed”
and then said “getting married and having your spouse come play on the exact same team as you is the answer”
the fact that the ottawa charge, a professional athletic association, has a bag of clementines in their locker room as a post-win snack is absolutely hilarious to me
love the idea of sidney getting to go to worlds and just be one of the guys for the duration of the tournament. love him getting to play hockey and enjoy it and capitalize on all of the experiences and opportunities that he has left. love him getting to support and witness one of his mentees growing as a player and as a leader.

thinking about sacrificing your wants and your needs so much that you don’t know what they are. thinking about giving so much to others in the hope that one day you’ll be good, that you’ll be chosen. thinking about how grief and loss makes you more mature but also serves to isolate you from your peers. thinking about how the real desire to do good becomes twisted and thrown in your face. thinking about getting sued and maligned for simply trying to do what is within your power to help someone.
thinking about how, despite all that you have done to help and mentor and love the people around you, you fully wake up many years later and realize that there is no pond and no kids and no wife and no boyfriend and no movie night where you get to watch what you want.
thinking about whitaker - who has every excuse to be just as mean and hard-edged as everyone else.
he spent much of his first shift doing the dirty and unglamorous work of medicine without complaint. he seemed to have spent an undetermined amount of time in extreme economic need far away from his support system. he absolutely wasn’t immune to the trauma of working in an ER. his literal first interaction with this discipline is death.
he has every reason to be angry and self-concerned, to lash out in rage, frustration, and guilt.
and yet
he’s kind. he’s compassionate. he’s open to feedback and willing to share what he’s learned with others. he’s got empathy and understanding for those above and below him in a rigid system that thrives on hierarchy and hazing.
and i think in a show that thrives on showing us the reality, the system at its most broken
it’s nice to have whitaker, who perhaps reflects what all these physicians once were and maybe could be again - big hearted people who did this for the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life
