I think it's a milk name. The Malkieri were still using bynames (e.g. Cowin Fairheart) right up until the fall of Malkier, when everyone else seems to have dropped the practice after the War of the Hundred Years, so the idea of a person's name changing over the course of their life clearly isn't like, totally absent, and infant mortality (about the same in Andor as in the preindustrial history of our own world per... Crossroads of Twilight, I think, but it might be Knife of Dreams) is probably high in the northern Borderlands. I think "Lan" is something you call a baby when they're little, before giving them a real name at a later date. (Since men from the Borderlands give their ages from the time they got their sword, this may traditionally be as late as fifteen, but it might be around a year old, or five, when the odds look better that a child will live to adulthood). Only then his parents died and I don't think any of the men who raised him really felt like they had the right to change it. Of course, if Malkieri don't get grownup names until they're in their mid teens, it's also possible that a young man's carneira is supposed to bestow their adult name, or at least have input on it, and Edeyn just...didn't. That sounds like something she would do.

chapter 47 of The Shadow Rises is really funny for how much happens in it. we get a political coup and civil war which leaves hundreds dead over the course of a day, we get a unique horror which two characters are experiencing, and we get the creation of a dozen different plotlines, all in a single chapter. and this happens after the previous ten chapters were Perrin fucking around in the woods for weeks and achieving nothing. like the priorities are just a little askew

Something happened at Dumai's Wells. I mean, obviously a lot of things happened at Dumai's Wells. But something happened that I think actually messed with the nature of reality a bit, or, idk, switched the track to what had previously been a low-probability future. After Dumai's Wells, we stop seeing new Weird Shit in the setting. The aggressive foreshadowing that Perrin is going to be a Warder is just...dropped. Taim stops being Demandred. (Which is fine. A man can be simultaneously one of the Foresaken and not until he's observed and the waveform collapses. That's physics.) Presumably this is when it stops being the case that either Perrin or Lan will die in the Last Battle and be resurrected by Nynaeve, and starts being the case that it's actually impossible to Heal death. And I cannot pin down just what exactly it was that happened. Nothing in the Karaethon cycle is illuminating here. No one used Balefire. There wasn't a bubble of evil. "The first nine Aes Sedai swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn, and the world was changed forever" is certainly a true statement, but not much of an explanation.
