There's another precedent here - when Kohlberg developed his theory of the stages of moral development, he identified "conventional," i.e. responsive to the judgments of your community, as a less-developed stage than "post-conventional," or independent. This is a biased standard - after all, which kinds of people are more likely to feel comfortable disagreeing with their communities? Which kinds of people will feel more obligated to care about other people's needs or concerns? Which kinds of people will be given space to develop and articulate independent ideas?
