He (grief) is ‘never going away’; he will find you, he will remind you.

And until you name him, you can’t tame him.

Dan spends years not naming his grief; instead ignores and represses and fears him until it all overflows at the end and its revealed that Dan has had his own Gabe haunting him all along. And only once he names him, acknowledging his festering grief at long, long, last, can Dan begin to heal.

Gabe’s physical presence in the musical is the antithesis to his absence in reality, and it is so intentional. It’s one massive metaphor that’s scratching my brain in exactly the right way.

Gabe’s presence is actually representative of his absence.

Like, anytime he is loud and present and the star of the show (I’m Alive, Aftershocks, I am the one); these are the moments when his absence is most felt by his family. Grief is loud and grief is absence.

And in his final moment with Natalie, when she ‘notices’ him for the first time- she can’t, and doesn’t, notice his actual presence. She’s not grieving a brother that she never even knew. Rather, she feels for a moment the presence of an absence, one that has impacted- and even ruined- her entire life. This is what she’s grieving in this moment. And i think that is fucking beautiful.

There’s also something to be said about Diana feeling his absence even when she doesn’t remember him. Somehow the absence of grief is worse, more wrong, than the grief itself.
