‘Intrusion’ extra, what it says about Jiang Cheng’s role in MDZS, and how Wei Wuxian looks back on his past with the Jiangs
I said back in like June that I’d write meta on this and then put it off for a few months, oops! Here we are, finally!
First things first, both the ‘Intrusion’ and ‘Iron Hook’ extras are not just silly romps featuring married wangxian and fanservice, as some people seem to believe?? I’d say both of them clear up pretty neatly, for those that are still confused, points of contention in the fandom - such as Wei Wuxian’s heroism, and Jiang Cheng’s role as an antagonist. Specifically, if his actions were justified or sympathetic, and if he was punished unfairly by the narrative.
The first and most obvious statement made in ‘Intrusion’ is the parallel between the story of Young Master Qin (YMQ), and JC and WWX’s youths. I’ll summarise quickly the relationship between YMQ and the fierce corpse that has been bothering him.
They grew up together in YMQ’s grandmother’s house, since they were a similar age they played together
The fierce corpse (FC) was a servant in YMQ’s grandmother’s household
The grandmother took a liking to FC, and he was in some ways treated less like a servant, and more like a member of their clan, and was allowed to attend school with the other boys
YMQ specifically notes that his grandmother used to praise FC a lot
YMQ describes a story at the school in which someone answered a question, and FC incorrectly claimed he answered wrongly. When FC pushed the matter, the other students became annoyed and drove him out of the class
It is very heavily implied (to the point where ‘implied’ isn’t really the right word) that ‘someone’ was YMQ, that he had actually answered the question wrongly, and that he felt shown up by someone he felt should be below him proving so, and that he led the other boys in driving FC away
FC left the school and didn’t attend again
I probably don’t need to lay out where the similarities are…?
In response to YMQ’s story, Wei Wuxian (rhetorically) says this - ‘“Regarding the solution to that problem, in the end, who was right and who was wrong?”’
Aside from just exposing the kind of person YMQ is, in reference to a story wherein ‘FC’ is clearly a stand in for WWX, and YMQ for JC, MXTX’s decision to highlight specifically that it was FC that had the right solution to the problem is not insignificant. Nor how she specifies that he was the instigator of FC’s expulsion, while hiding behind the mob mentality of the other students.
Another interesting detail is that YMQ deliberately obscures the truth throughout the chapter, because despite his refusal to acknowledge it, possibly even to himself, he knows that between him and FC he is the one in the wrong. Similarly, JC obscures the truth about WWX, to the wider cultivation world during the period of WWX’s ‘downfall,’ (Ch.73) but also, more importantly, to JL after WWX’s death. JL believes that WWX ordered WN to kill both JZX and JYL (Ch.42). Of course, if JC did not have a guilty conscience, he would not feel it necessary to lie about these things. Or rather, convince himself that they are true, as he still blames WWX for the deaths of his parents’ and JYL and the end of the story (Ch.102).
YMQ’s attitude about servants is bad enough that it upsets Sizhui quite a lot, and shortly after their interaction with him, we have this exchange between LSZ and Wangxian.
‘Lan SiZhui thought about it, “I do not know either.” He responded with honesty, “He never did anything truly evil, but perhaps I find it difficult to deal with people of such character. I do not particularly like the tone with which he mentioned the word ‘servant’…”
He paused at this point. Wei WuXian was oblivious to it, “Typical, typical. Most of the people in this world looks down upon servants. Servants sometimes even look down upon themselves… Why are you two looking at me like that?”
Halfway through, he interrupted, not knowing whether to laugh or frown, “Stop—is there a misunderstanding here? How could I compare? Lotus Pier isn’t the usual household, after all. I’ve beaten Jiang Cheng up way more times than he’s ever beaten me!”
Lan WangJi didn’t say anything, but instead gave him a silent hug. Wei WuXian couldn’t help but smiled. He hugged back, stroking Lan WangJi’s back a couple of times. Lan SiZhui coughed. Seeing how confident Wei WuXian looked, not at all sensitive to the word ‘servant’, he was finally at ease.’
There’s a lot going on here...
Firstly, WWX definitely does not think badly of himself because his father was a servant, because WWX doesn’t think badly of servants. It is also true that Lotus Pier wasn’t so strict with hierarchy as other sects (Ch.51, Ch.71), and that WWX and JC sometimes playfully fought on equal terms in their youths. But WWX was also very clearly treated badly in the Jiang household due to his status, notably by YZY (Ch.51, Ch.56, Ch.57, Lotus Seed Pod extra), JC does also repeatedly enact real physical violence against WWX, that he simply brushes off (Ch.56, Ch.59). You could argue that the example from Ch.59 is under extenuating circumstances and therefore should not count, but the same excuse cannot apply to Ch.56.
Knowing this, Lan Wangji’s response to this, to hug WWX, does not feel casual at all. Instead it comes across as if he is offering comfort, which WWX accepts.
Finally, this exchange finishes with ‘Seeing how confident Wei WuXian looked, not at all sensitive to the word ‘servant’, he [LSZ] was finally at ease.’ To me, this seems to suggest that the entire purpose of this was not at all reader directed exposition about how good and equal the Jiang household was, but rather a WWX-typical veneer meant to appease LSZ’s concerns (taking a moment to quietly fangirl about how good MXTX is at ‘show, don’t tell’). Also suggests that WWX is aware on some level that he was treated badly, and LWJ is too - presumably, it is something that they have spoken about.
Continuing with the story of YMQ and FC…
YMQ returns to his home village as an adult wearing a jade pendant that belonged to his now deceased grandmother
FC asks to borrow it, YMQ allows it, thinking FC is missing his grandmother
FC returns telling him he has lost the pendant, YMQ thinks he has actually sold it, and has him beaten, it is very heavily implied that he breaks his leg
In the present, YMQ admits that he doesn’t actually think FC would have gone so far as to sell something of his grandmother’s
This is reflective of JC’s attitude towards WWX throughout his life, with regards to how he frequently comes to the worst conclusions about him, without having any real evidence, and lashes out at him for it. I spoke about this a bit before here. Most notable example is probably during their conversation in the demon-slaughtering cave wherein they discuss WWX’s defection, and JC decides that WWX is acting carelessly and playing the hero, though admits himself that WWX is following the Jiang Sect’s teachings, then declares WWX an enemy of the cultivation world behind his back.
The ambiguity of FC’s death, and YMQ’s role in it discussed in part 3 of the extra is referencing WWX’s own death, and JC’s role in it. In the end the conclusion is that whether or not YMQ was responsible, FC did not hold him to it.
In the end, FC is content to simply throw some fruit, and punch YMQ in the face in vengeance for his death, and even goes out of his way to avoid hurting LSZ when he is fighting him. He returns the jade pendant, that he really did lose and not steal, and goes back to resting peacefully.
WWX, LWJ, and LSZ’s views on YMQ’s fate are as follows
‘Lan WangJi gently tugged Lil’ Apple’s rein, his voice calm, “He was fortunate.”
Wei WuXian agreed, “Indeed. Young Master Qin has got quite the luck.”
After some time, Lan SiZhui finally couldn’t hold his words back any longer. Sincerely, he spoke, “But I still feel that only one punch might be a bit insufficient…”’
JC didn’t even get a punch to the face. I’d say he got off very lightly indeed.

tolkien fans are insufferable because you'll agree to watch the movies with them and then seven hours in they'll say "omg my favourite character is about to appear!" and it's a fucking siege weapon
I will not stand by while Grond, Hammer of the Underworld is slandered in such a way!
"Where has all the genuine self-expression gone? Now what used to be authentic subculture is turned into a performance of Aesthetic!" so many posts exclaim, usually concluding that the problem is Capitalism.
I don't disagree entirely, but. The problem is that y'all are so deathly fucking afraid of things Cringe, Weird, and Uncool that anything unmarketable, subversive, or oddball enough to be "genuine subculture" is gross and unacceptable to you.
People wish to see "genuine self expression" that is not a performance or a commodity.
Very well then. I assume you're appreciating and celebrating the dress, style and behavior of somewhat shabby, weird outcasts who firmly refuse to make themselves palatable to you?
I think some of you are forgetting what "subculture" means. If it makes everybody around you think you are cool and look nice, that's missing the point a little bit. That's just...culture!
When people express themselves in a way that is not a performance to appeal to others...
...it is actually very likely that they will...not appeal to you.
"Why can't people be unapologetically themselves, in a way that is of course never "cringy" or too weird or too ugly or uncool? Why can't we have self-expression without performance, in a way that is not boring to me and that doesn't weird me out?"
Do you see the problem?
There are still robust, thriving subcultures full of unique fashion and artistic expression...
"Ah, but you see, that one is personally unappealing to me!"
That's the Point, you fools!
I see how people talk about non-binary youths with hair dyed in funny colors. But there is such a young person of indeterminate gender I see sometimes on my college campus with "Trans Liberation Now!" and a bunch of other symbols and slogans hand-painted on their jacket, and they are a million times more "Punk" than anyone with simply piercings and spiky chokers
I was thinking about the incredibly cruel phenomenon of taking photos of strangers without consent and uploading them to websites so others can mock them, in the vein of "People of Walmart" and other such things, and when looking it up, I was disturbed to see how many of them are just 1) a fat person is in public (wow!) or 2) a (perceived) man is being obviously gender non-conforming
they are just existing. probably at a more advanced level than you.
Louder, for the folks in back...
SK8 ED fail names
I've been meaning to do this post for a while but keep forgetting about it and doing other things lol...
Explanations of the names of the fails that happen in the ED!
Chakuseki (着席) - This is the Japanese for "Take a seat" since he landed on his board in a sitting position.
Matasaki (股裂き) - I'd say this one is close to "Splits" but the Japanese word means "groin ripper" so much more dramatic lol
Pochan (ポチャン) - The Japanese sound for a "Splash"
Utsumi joked in an interview that it was supposed to be similar to the "I'll be back" scene from the terminator.
Nutcracker - this one is pretty obvious to English speakers but apparently Utsumi had "Gold Target" written in the original storyboard.
According to Utsumi, when one of the skater staff saw it they said that there was a better slang word to use for it and told her to use Nutcracker.
In Japanese, testicles are known as kintama (金玉) which literally means gold balls.
Hitori Piledriver (一人パイルドライバー) - This means "Solo piledriver".
A piledriver, if you don't know, is a wrestling move where an opponent turns someone upside-down, and drops into a sitting or kneeling position while holding them to drive them head-first into the mat. So this is a person dropping themselves head first onto the ground.
Reito Maguro (冷凍マグロ) - Is Japanese for "frozen tuna". It's when you step off a ramp while skateboarding but just fall straight down like you're frozen.

I’m still working on those request fics btw! I just hit a cluster of due dates for some projects :)
Ainosuke rolled his wrist in a theatrical flourish. “That’s a little vague, you know. What does restless mean?”
Tadashi raised an eyebrow. “Well, sir, typically it means you have something up your sleeve.”
Ainosuke grinned at him.

The way you said “I love you.“
trash-by-vouge:
Some fluffy, some angsty prompts
As a hello
With a hoarse voice, under the blankets
A scream
Over a cup of tea
Over a beer bottle
On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the late sunlight glowing in your hair
As a thank you
As an apology
When baking chocolate chip cookies
Not said to me
With a shuddering gasp
When we lay together on the fresh spring grass
In a letter
A whisper in the ear
Loud, so everyone can hear
Over and over again, till it’s nothing but a senseless babble
When the broken grass litters the floor
From very far away
With no space left between us
As we huddle together, the storm raging outside
Over your shoulder
Muffled, from the other side of the door
Through a song
Without really meaning it
In a blissful sigh as you fall asleep
Broken, as you clutch the sleeve of my jacket and beg me not to leave
A taunt, with one eyebrow raised and a grin bubbling at your lips
When I am dead
Slowly, the words dripping from your tongue like honey
Too quick, mumbled into your scarf
In awe, the first time you realised it
In a way I can’t return
On a post-it note
Before we jump
As a goodbye
heyy, new prompt list just dropped. send me an ask with a pairing and a number! ^^

I don't know if you still do those. If yes:
drunk/sloppy kiss . + Tadaai, pretty please. >//A//<
It had been weeks since Ainosuke had last bothered trying to convince Tadashi to come skate with him and Cherry and Joe. The elder of them had become much more withdrawn since Aiichirou had taken him on as his secretary. Ainosuke wasn't stupid, he knew that his father was a busy man and that Tadashi would be busy, but it still stung. Tadashi insisted on escorting him, but would not join him, and he very rarely skated with Ainosuke in the drained pool; it was hard not to stew on that resentment as he huddled close with Joe and Cherry in the chill of midnight, drinking cheap beer and smoking cheaper cigarettes.
They had passed the mark where they had too much to keep their balance on a skateboard, but they still stayed together, joking and passing the time until Joe announced he had to get Kaoru home before his mother hung them both by their ears.
Ainosuke waved goodbye, staying behind for a moment to finish his last cigarette. He wasn't looking forward to what awaited him, after all; a quiet car ride back to the Shindo estate.
He finally flicked aside the cigarette butt with a sigh and stood, skateboard tucked under his arm, walking along the sidewalk until he heard the soft rumble of the car pulling up alongside him. Without a word, he circled to the back of the car, putting the skateboard in the trunk. Ainosuke paused with his hand resting on top of the trunk.
Tadashi's appearance at his side broke him out of his trance. Was he that drunk? Maybe. "Ainosuke-sama..."
"What?" Tadashi appeared at a loss. Frustration welled up again, buoyed by the beer still making his head swim. It had been pleasant, wedged between his two friends; now it was just disorienting. "What is your problem anyway?"
"Sir?"
"You! This!" He gestured around. "What is the point?"
"I'm afraid I don't understand."
Ainosuke made a frustrated sound, kicking the bumper of the car and swaying as it disrupted his already unsteady balance. "Sure! You just hover around me all night after working for my father from the crack of dawn for no reason! You won't skate with me or even really talk to me, but you're always over my shoulder. Does he have you keeping tabs on me?"
Tadashi was hard for anyone but Ainosuke to read, but even he wasn't sure what this expression was. "I am here because I want to be," he said softly. "I like to see you happy."
"Do I look happy?" Ainosuke demanded.
"You look drunk," Tadashi said bluntly. "Let me take you home."
"You're slippery," Ainosuke muttered. "Tadashi -- come on."
Tadashi sighed and stepped close, hesitating before reaching out and smoothing his hand down the collar of Ainosuke's shirt. "I worry about you," he said, his tone far warmer and less distant. "I have to see with my own eyes that you're safe out here."
He started to pull his hand away, but Ainosuke grabbed it. "Promise you'll skate with me again," he murmured.
"I..."
Ainosuke tugged him into his arms, the older boy only making the weakest of protests. He leaned forward, pressing his lips to Tadashi's, too drunk and full of need to care about how he must taste like an easy date at a cheap bar. The softness of Tadashi's lips was more important, the taste of his mouth and the silken brush of his hair against Ainosuke's skin. He clung to Tadashi's arms, kissing him until he finally put space between them again.
They were both breathing hard. "Ainosuke..."
"Promise," Ainosuke said, leaning against him.
Tadashi's breath shuddered out of his lungs and he leaned his forehead against Ainosuke's temple.
"I promise."
7 kiss, Eden
The next time he saw Adam after the party celebrating his victory was a total surprise; Langa was skating at the little park he usually practiced at with Reki, months later. Reki himself had gone home already, something about an activity with his little sisters; Langa stayed behind, trying to nail as many rotations as he could. Joe had mentioned only a few skaters had ever made 900, and of course that had set Langa to it like a dog with a bone.
He hadn't even realized someone was watching until he landed 540 and heard soft clapping from near one of the benches. Langa paused, finally, and peered over that way. The man was unmistakably Adam, although he had never seen Adam in a three piece suit with his hair slicked back. Smiling, Langa kicked his skateboard up to his hand and trotted over to him.
"Sorry for the intrusion," Adam said, not sounding very sorry at all, "Miya told me where to find you."
Langa shook his head. "No bother," he said. "I was just trying to see how much I can spin. It's good to see you." He thought nothing of standing so close to Adam -- even outside the trappings of S, his presence was magnetic.
Adam reached for him, then paused. "May I?" he asked.
Langa smiled. "Yeah," he said.
Adam's smile mirrored Langa's own as he trailed his fingers through Langa's hair. "I've missed seeing you, Langa-kun," he murmured.
"Me too," Langa replied. "Will you come back to S?"
"Soon." His gaze was intent on Langa's face as he cupped his cheek, meeting his gaze with clear longing -- Langa could feel it tug at his own heart. "Is this okay?"
In reply, Langa simply shifted his skateboard to one arm and wrapped the other around Adam's neck, pulling him down into a soft kiss. Adam's lips were as soft as they looked, his hands achingly gentle as they slipped down his body to hold his waist. Langa pulled back with a smile. "Wanna skate with me?"
Adam smiled brightly. "I'd love to," he said..
Langa grinned. "First one to 900 gets to pick out a date spot."
The sound of Adam's laughter was so joyous it made Langa wish he could take wing and fly on it forever.
