"Ya know, Ikkaku isn't my only grandchild, but she is my only granddaughter. An' I don't think anything's made me happier than hearin' I was getting a little girl to spoil," Tomasu said, placing an enormous jug of moonshine on the table and pulling a few photos out of his wallet of a little girl with dark curls and curious eyes. "Well, 'cept when my wife agreed t' marry me. Still, there's somethin' about a granddaughter that just makes the world seem a little brighter, ya know? But it also makes ya notice how dark an' dangerous the world is, an' that brings out a side of me that's willin' t' commit atrocities t' keep her safe. I can only imagine how far you'd got for any of your kids, Newgate."
"Gurararara! I don't have too many Daughters in my family, but I treasure the ones I do have." He replied jovially. The old smuggler was one of the few friends he had left in the ever changing world. "You can imagine my surprise when I found out my newest daughter was your grandchild?" He added as she looked through the photos Tomasu supplied. He purposely avoided the topic of wives and romances with woman both for the crush he'd had and lost and the woman that pursued him relentless that he hadn't been interested in.
Both accounts had taught him some valuable lessons on romantic relationships, and at least for him, it was probably best to avoid them. He had his kids, his found and forged family. He had everything he needed.
"It's that reason that I am as protective as I am. I've known how bad the world is out of the gate." Whitebeard stated as he reflected on his childhood. A mere orphan with a few other stragglers just fighting day to day to survive. The world was a bit kinder to those on World Government affiliated islands, but it was still a cold and cruel place. "So long as I draw breath, your little girl will be safe under my flag." Newgate added reassuringly.
