Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find Dakota ‘Koda’ Fahey, the 28 year old cashier at Rewind Rentals originally from Waterford, Ireland. Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're adventurous and resourceful, but what you might not know is that they are a human, and that they’re hiding something…
As a child growing up in Ireland, her love for life seemed infinite. The cliffside was her sanctuary, and the fields were her playground. Dakota had just learned to speak when her family was whisked around because of her dad's job. The only home she'd ever known was left behind for a decade-long trip across the new country. Her father was a scientist or as far as she knew. They went where they had to to make ends meet, and her mother did her best to make sure her daughter got a normal childhood, which involved homeschooling and participating in activities anywhere they visited. It wasn't until Koda was in her teens that the truth started to come out.
Her father's brain was going towards the destruction of an entire group of people, those that Koda didn't even know existed. One night she snuck out of their van to see where her family slipped off once their child went to bed and that's where she learned the truth. Plans were being put in place because of her father's research and what he discovered went towards the removal of anyone who they deemed unclean. There were discussions of a man they were looking for who was involved and now they had been given a name due to his help. That's when everything changed. Confrontation didn't go well, they only tried to convince her that what they did was for her own good without hearing out the concerns of their child. What she had always thought was love had been their molding her into what they wanted her to become. After they saw the seeds of doubt in their daughter she was sent to live with her aunt in Texas but Koda didn't even last a year. She ran away at fifteen and caught a Greyhound, going as far as it would take her with a plan to find the family who she had severed her ties with.
Instead of becoming the mirror image of her father, she did the exact opposite. Everything she'd learned from him was what Koda used to look for the truth, and that's when she landed in Cardinal Hill, Washington. The small town became home after bouncing between cities in the Pacific Northwest, and rumor had it that it was a safe haven for those her bloodline despised. Maybe there she could find what she was looking for. Koda searched for answers to the questions left behind by her parents. That's also where she met him and almost let herself be happy. That was until she learned about his father, then pieces started to come together, unable to deny the probable involvement of her family, the answer she was most afraid of, feeling far too close. That's when she vanished again, Koda having a knack for that.
She needed distance from what they had done and the stains she couldn't clean. In those years away from Cardinal she prepared herself for what might inevitably come. Though she hadn't reconnected with her parents or run across them in her journey, their actions stayed with her and her desire to make up for them. Their failures sat on her shoulders now. Koda is returning to the town she loves, knowing only there she can get the answers she seeks and make amends for her family's sins.
