“Sunbaenim,  I  look  forward  to  learning  a  lot  from  you  going  forward!”

It  was  a  collaboration  that  had  the  scene  in  a  buzz:  two  media  darlings  working  on  the  same  project.  Still—however  equal  they  were  in  reputation,  it  did  not  stop  Jae-hyun  from  showing  his  respect.  He  bowed  deeply,  hair  askew  despite  the  gel  their  stylists  had  so  diligently  applied  earlier  that  day.

“It  was  kind  of  funny  that  we  ordered  from  the  same  café  for  the  crew.”  A  hapless  grin  stretched  across  his  face.  “I’m  kind  of  relieved,  though.  The  sandwiches  looked  really  good,  right?  I  wanted  to  eat  one  right  away,  but—diets  suck.  Oh!” 

A  blink,  cheeks  flushing  with  self-reprimand. 

“I’ve  gotten  ahead  of  myself.  I  wanted  to  ask,  actually—I  know  we  share  a  bunch  of  scenes  together.  Would  you  like  to  exchange  numbers?  Maybe  we  can  do  some  line  practice.  If  you're  comfortable,  I  mean!”

“The  men  in  this  town  are  kinda…”  A  pause,  as  if  she—in  her  own  shabby  state  from  living  on  the  run—had  no  right  to  say  such  a  thing.  Even  so,  Echo  stared  into  the  crowd.  “Ugly,  huh.”

She  turned  to  Tsuyuko  from  her  side  of  the  stall,  their  appetizers  yet  to  arrive.

“You  really  think  we  could  get  one  of  them  to  pay  for  our  food?  I  haven’t  dined  and  dashed  in  a  while.”

Yuming  gestured  them  forward,  deeper  into  The  Oriole’s  Echo.  The  interior  was  blissfully  cooler  than  the  sweltering  outdoors  thanks  to  the  elaborate  air-conditioning  system.  ‘Uncle’  Lingyun  had  seen  to  it  that  the  aging  units  were  replaced  the  month  prior.  Thank  goodness,  too.  The  humidity  in  China  was  no  joke.

“Can  I  get  you  anything?”

“… Do  you  have  regrets,  Mirage?”

His  mansion  is  a  gilded  prison,  but  Echo  has  found  parts  of  it  she  likes.  The  air  in  Italy  is  warm  this  time  of  year,  and  she  closes  her  eyes  to  bask  in  the  sun,  dipping  newly  painted  toes  into  a  crystalline  pool.  One  of  the  only  things  in  her  life  that  seems  clear  these  days.

She’d  like  to  swim,  she  thinks,  but  a  bathing  suit  isn’t  in  her  repertoire.  It  makes  her  miss  the  New  York  City  summers  with  Meili.  Ducking  beneath  the  hose  in  front  of  the  Lin  family  restaurant,  squealing  like  small  pigs  as  they  darted  about.

“Well,”  she  corrects  after  a  moment,  turning  her  face  up  to  take  in  his  masked  visage.  “Something  you  wish  you’d  done  differently,  I  mean.  Or  something  you  might’ve  said  that  you  can’t  now.”

Golden  eyes  slant  with  distrust—predisposed,  perhaps,  to  dislike.  It’s  not  her  fault  she’d  been  assigned  to  the  bastard  child,  but  her  proximity  to  Kang-dae  affords  her  only  alienation.

“⸻Yes?”  Terse;  barely  polite.  He  has  no  idea  what  his  mother  thinks  of  that  family's  business  dealings  yet.  Not  that  it  will  impact  him  much,  with  Father  still  at  the  helm.
