My favorite part about 1931 Dracula is that there are armadillos running around Draculaβs castle.
Look at this itβs like they couldnβt find any rats so they just were like βeh close enough no one will noticeβ. But I noticed. I noticed.

Apparently in the 20s and 30s, armadillos werenβt very commonly known, so moviemakers would use them wherever they needed some creepy,Β βdemonicβ animal running around. So there were a lotΒ of armadillos in early filmmaking, and it was often peopleβs only source of reference for armadillos.
Fast forward twenty years to when the father of the biology professor who told me this is driving out from the east coast to see his son in California. Crossing the southwest at night.
An armadillo runs across the road.Β
He comes to a screeching halt and the Thing Of Evil, which he never knew was actually a real animal, trots the rest of the way across the road and vanishes into the desert.
Apparently it shook him up rather a bit.

I can actually explain some of this.
First the armadillos. Β Yes, a lot of people had never seen them but there were books and photographs and nature magazines had been around for over a century. Todd Browning (the director) was born and raised in the American South, so he was very familiar with armadillos and he happened to like those freaky little bastards so thatβs part of why theyβre there besides the reason already provided.Β Β As for the bee, I have a suspicion that wasnβt meant to be Draculaβs pet but actually one of the vampires of the castle like the three women who the movie calls βthe bridesβ even though the novel suggests they are Draculaβs daughters.Β Β
Β See in the novel Dracula could turn into a bat, wolf, mist, summon storms, and even rats (which he does in one scene of the Coppola movie). Β So itβs not that big of a leap to assume his ilk of vampire can become insects. Β Dario Argento (in his 2013 Dracula film) gave Dracula the power to turn into a seven foot tall mantis and an owl. Β I kind of liked the owl transformation. Β The mantis was unintentionally comical. Β So itβs possible we were supposed to think that was a full seven foot tall coffin with an oversized bee coming out of it.
Oddly, I think the silent film of Faust by F. W. Murnau had better special effects nearly five years earlierβ¦
