Poor is the New Black

I was really having this moment at work today.

Being the bookworm that I am, I was so excited to load up on fiction and self-help books.

My boyfriend promised me to buy me a book and most of the marketing books that I wanted were at the 1k-2k range.

Thing is... I just got overwhelmed with all of the options, so I just decided to get a book I’ve been eyeing for a while because I really don’t want to continue living from paycheck to paycheck.  This book costs 500 pesos, but it’s worth it because it’s actually 2 books bound together. The other book’s title is “I wish they taught money in high school so I can start my own business right away”. 

I’ve read the first book: “I wish they taught money in high school so I’m not dependent on my paycheck.”

It helps give more awareness when it comes to your options in growing your money less the intimidating jargon. :) 

Suggestions I got from the book:

1. Open your first mutual fund

2. Try out the stock market

3. Try taking advantage of things that are usually deemed scary like credit cards, loans and opening a checking account with maintaining balance of 10k.

4. Create something out of nothing. In Purita terms, RAKET PA MORE!!! 

It was a pretty short read... but it’s absolutely worth it. 

Personally, I’ve been raised to  become a hardworker and reading this book makes me feel that I’ve been doing it wrong and that there is a way to work smart. I envy the way the author was trained at an early age to think that there are other ways of making money aside from just having a day job and being an employee for life. Kind of makes me feel like I wish someone told me sooner. 

Then again, it’s been said that the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now. :) 

I gave in to peer pressure last Friday when my officemates invited me to watch #walangforever at SM AURA.

SM AW-RAH HAAA!!! Omg, I was expecting that since it’s a Filipino movie, it would cost less. Boy, was I wrong! I ended up shelling out 295 bucks. I’m probably old because I can still remember paying 50 pesos for a movie. May up and down pa yun ha! To be fair, the price is justified because the seats are comfortable and the floor is clean (as in no chance of rats in the theater because daaayyym, I’d flip out if it happens).

I was feeling hungry but I felt like the lady at the ticket booth bled my budget dry. Instead of getting overpriced popcorn, I decided to check out the food court. The food was expensive!!! But imagine my surprise when I found out that Sbarro sells Cheese Pizza st 49 pesos per pc. That’s one big ass slice of pizza good enough to be dinner.

Next time you go to SM AW-RAH and you feel like having pizza at 49 pesos per slice, GET THE CHEESE PIZZA!!!

I’ve done waxing before (manly legs since high school) and i stumbled upon this ‘sugaring’ wax at the Sesou stall in Glorietta (near Artwork).

Let me tell you, it’s so far the BEST D.I.Y. waxing kit I’ve ever encountered. You don’t have to pre-heat it! It smells nice, super organic, and natural! It also comes with waxing strips you can reuse! (Just soak in water, and the wax/sugaring naturally comes off)

It's far more painless than ordinary waxing. The guide that comes with it says that it only sticks to hair, so it wouldn't hurt so much on your skin.

Booksale. Arguably one of the best places to spend idle time at. Are a you a bookworm hunting for paperback and hardcover heaven? A student looking for review books? A craftsman or hobbyist looking for hard-to-find hobby and subject books? Look no further. One of the best things to happen to the Philippine book scene is just around the corner. Booksale! You just have to have a bit of patience to rifle through the non-genre arranged titles but that’s just a small hiccup in the whole scheme of things. If you get lucky, you might even find hardcover releases of your favorite book series at 70% off from the original price (this happened to me, so I know I’m talking truth)!

So next time you’ve a hankering for a good read but lack the funds to buy from your usual “high-end” bookstores, just think “Booksale” and I promise you, your little bookworm heart might just stop from cheap-priced, good books aplenty.

I bought another cheap-ass pair of shoes that don’t look like they’re cheap-ass at all. More like, your semi-expensive, high-cut, hipster feet fare – Black Chuck Taylors. So, how much was this current awesome find? P499 at Market!Market! Just make your way to the guys’ footwear section, to those shelves with unmarked or chinese-branded shoes. The only way you can tell that it’s not a real Converse issue is the lack of branding – in this case, the Converse star. Anyhoo, IF you do want a “branded”, fake Converse pair, head on over to Guadalupe mall, Baclaran or better yet, Divisoria and you can get these for P300-350 per pair.

I used to think that the coolness of a person’s kicks is directly proportional to how expensive it is.

I.E. the more money you spent on your shoes, the better looking or the cooler it is.

Well, that was the OLD me. The one who didn’t know any better and the one who used to think that branded materials are the end-all and be-all of shoe/ sneaker fashion.

Good thing though, as I grew older (and hopefully wiser), my perspective also widened enough to actually consider debunking these fashion myths.

One day whilst wandering through the local Pure Gold store (before grocery shopping, that is), I stumbled upon “UNO”, their local RTW outlet. Lo and behold, they’ve got a stock of the best looking, uber- cheap kicks I’ve ever seen. It’s heaven for the pa-stylish financially-challenged people of this world.

THE VERDICT

I found these “Irie Wash” sneakers at Mall 168′s 4th floor. For P150, it’s quite a steal - what with its cute cream-colored lace shoelaces. For P150, it’s also an item you wouldn’t use everyday. It probably wouldn’t hold that long (maybe I’ll post something when these shoes finally give in).

Everyone knows Divisoria is heaven for Purita girls like me. But don’t be deceived by P300 pairs of shoes.

As a rule, there’s something cheaper somewhere. But at the same time, unique items should not be ignored easily.

It’s a skill Purita seekers of quality over quantity (price) aim to master.
