*** in shintō religion, a “shinboku” was a tree that often acted as a symbol for the land, & is considered sacred or spiritual. it’s often also believed to be the home to a deity. in the feudal era, it was common to worship nature as sacred, and so the sacred tree was always revered. a shrine could also be built around the tree, as it was thought to thrive off of purity / divinity. the small shrine built around it, soon expanded into the modern day higurashi shrine.
*** the goshinboku itself has strange abilities, as anything sealed upon it will stop aging entirely. ( e.g : inuyasha not aging for 50 years while sealed to the tree was due to the goshinboku’s strange time-stopping abilities ) after breaking the seal upon inuyasha, kagome is inadvertently tied to it’s lifespan. she is aware that she does not age normally after the destruction of the jewel, however, she never made the connection to the goshinboku and has resigned to her fate. inuyasha, however, does sense that her abilities and power have changed since then, even on a carnal level.
*** the bone-eater’s well, which is made from the lumber of the goshinboku, has the ability to transcend time & connect the two eras. while it was primarily used to dispose of demon remains ———————— the demonic & pure energy are melded together, creating sort of a purgatory, in which time does not exist. however, as her fate was tied to the jewel, kagome travels 500 years before her birth, and 50 years after kikyo’s passing. she was met by an endless forest which was undisturbed by modern industry, & she still manages to recognize the goshinboku, as if her surroundings never changed. destiny and fate, while near impossible to change, seemed to bend at kagome’s will, although unknowingly due to her connection to the jewel & the goshinboku.
