problematic rage gap. one partner tries to bring nuance and understanding to a tough situation. the other wants to blow up the earth about it.
this sounds completely pathetic but i was wondering how you get mutuals to notice you. you seem to have a good relationship with yours at least from what i've seen.
aw, thanks! that's sweet of you to say!!!! not sure exactly how to answer this tbh, but i think my answer is just to not be shy about engaging with content you like.
i'm a content creator (i write fic and make mods) so that definitely helps, and i'm active in a lot of discords of varying sizes which also i think is a big part of it, but really it just comes down to a) being nice and b) not being shy about expressing enthusiasm for other people's stuff.
if you like something, whether it's art or fic or even just a good meta post, reblog it and interact with the person who made it!!!! i've made most of my fandom friends this way, either bc i slid into their dms or left one million comments on their fics bc i was a fan of their work or vice versa and often times that leads to a discord invite or starting an ongoing conversation and then boom, you made a friend.

not to sound like that person but to sound like that person: if you enjoyed something, i'm begging you to let the artist / writer / creator know.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false
This page is so beautiful and honestly I hope it reaches and helps any new people that are just starting out on Ao3 because it's helping me and I’ve been using the site for 5+ years now
I saw your tags @jackdaw-sprite and I figured I could offer you some help? You've got a few options to find fics that are actually about your fave who is often sidelined.
My own personal go-to is to use the Search Within Results filter. You can find the filters by clicking/tapping on any tag. If you're on a wide screen like a laptop, they'll be on the right hand side of the screen. If you're on a narrow screen like a phone, you'll need to press the Filters button at the top of the page to open up the menu.
In that menu, scroll down until you're near the bottom. That's where you can find the box labelled Search Within Results. In that box, you can type
summary: Renhardt OR summary: Rendog
When you filter for that result, you'll get 19 fics with that name mentioned in the summary, and if the name is in the summary you've got MUCH higher chances of them being central to the fic.
There's also a way to find fics with a tag in the X position. Fan coders have had this same issue, and so they've created userscripts that you can add to your web browser (like an extension). Here are a few that might be helpful for you to try:
AO3 Actually Relevant Characters - Sorts and highlights works based on how relevant the tagged character seems in the work's tags and summary.
AO3: Prioritise my Faves - Hide work if chosen tags are late in sequence, or if blacklisted tags are early
AO3 Secondary Character & Pairing Filter - Replaces works with placeholder if the tags you want aren't the first few tags, with option to show work.
Editing to add: this version of the post has a syntax error in it. To remove oneshots with a filter, use
-expected_number_of_chapters: 1
Okay, I learned SO much from this post!
I actually have this problem with Aleida a lot, so after filtering Ao3 fics with her character tag, I tried “Search Within Results” and put in “summary: Aleida.” The number of fics dropped from 97 to 22, which is both 😭 but also a REALLY cool way of filtering down to fics where the character you’re interested in is more likely to be a main character! It’s not perfect (E.g. it excluded a fic I wrote where I used the summary “Three times Javi showed his true feelings for his mom,” and an amazing M/S fic in my bookmarks with a huge meaty chapter that features Aleida. And it included fics that are say, summarized as AUs where Aleida doesn’t discover the engine design similarities, but don’t actually include her as a real character. And it’s really just 12 fics if you also exclude Margo/Sergei tagged fics). But still…really cool.
I know Tumblr is full of posts about the virtues of commenting on AO3 fics and such. But like. It works.
I just knocked out 8.5k words in one single day for a chapter update because of one reader leaving one of the most absurdly endearing comments I’ve ever gotten. That is unheard of levels of productivity for me.
The power of the fandom. The power of the comment.

Just wanted to toss this out there: if anyone out here on Tumblr is looking for company/mutual support in writing and reading For All Mankind/Star City fic, please be my friend let me know!
Real talk: It’s been feeling pretty quiet lately in the FAM fic writing & reading community, at least for me. A lot of people are taking a break from it right now, and while this is SO valid (especially after a FAM season that was highly disappointing to so many of us), I don’t feel like I have as many people to do certain things with as I used to; like talk about and mutually share sentences/struggles on WIP stories, read and comment on and talk about each other’s published fic (and other authors’ fic too! I love engaging with fic both old and new, as folks probably know from seeing me in comment sections), bounce ideas back and forth, and just actively support each other in both directions on FAM-verse projects. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, comment or shoot me a DM ❤️
What I’m currently working on: A Margo PoV, canon-compliant, S5-centric fic for my FTH 2026 bidder! It’s structured around prison visits from Aleida’s family (each separately then together) but the main goal is to provide some depth and insight into Margo’s internal life and character journey that we sadly didn’t get in the show.
Among my tiny handful of other WIP fics, the one I’m most interested in restarting after I finish my FTH commitment is a small collection of one-shots centering Aleida’s relationship with her Mexican heritage and with herself (the general theme is Aleida having conversations and feelings about her Mexican culture and heritage over the years that are also about something else). I’ve outlined two of the one-shots and nearly fully written a third. But honestly, I’ve already thrown so many (10!) Aleida fics out into the void of Ao3 that I really would need some real encouragement and excitement about it to convince me to restart it. Not like, sure I’ll read it because you’re a nice person but rather this story needs to be out there and I really love reading Aleida fic and want you to write it and not just keep it in your head 😂
My current FAM/Star City interests: My biggest fixations right now are Aleida Rosales (obviously), Margo Madison, and after finishing Star City Season 1: Anastasia Belikova (as well as Anastasia/Sasha). But I’m pretty much interested in all the FAM characters who appear Earth side throughout the seasons (and one or two Mars characters) and all the Star City characters! And I love reading and talking about a big range of character-driven stories and ships in the fandom 💕
wouldnt it be cool if i had fam and sc mutuals heres some of my fanart and a couple of astronaut studies
