Prologue: Discovering Magic
“How have you been since we last saw each other Alexis?” Professor Lazuli asked her. She had led her to a small corner of the school’s garden, where a table and chairs were set up. It looked like a tea party had been set up, complete with hot tea and snacks. The professor gestured for her to take a seat, which Alexis did.
The professor poured her a cup of tea before doing the same for herself. Alexis thanked her before taking a sip.
“It’s been well. Everyone’s been really nice to me,” she said. The professor smiled and gestured towards the sweets.
“That sounds wonderful. It’s always good to have friends,” she said, as Alexis reached out for a tea cake, but stopped herself. Alexis looked around the table.
“I’m sorry for asking, but shouldn’t we wait for everyone else?” she asked. The professor looked shocked for a moment before quietly laughing.
“Forgive me. I forgot to mention this. It’s a small habit of mine. I leave empty seats in case any of my friends show up,” she explained, gesturing to them.
“Oh. Are we waiting for the other professors?” Alexis asked.
“Oh no,” Professor Lazuli said with a smile. “These are for the friends I haven’t met yet.”
Alexis looked at her confused before the professor continued.
“You see, you never know when you’re going to meet someone who could be your friend, or even when someone needs a friend. So, I always keep seats open so that I can always be ready for them.”
Alexis was still confused by this, but decided to file it away for now.
“You said that the Headmistress you wanted to help me with special lessons, correct?” she asked, deciding to move on.
“That is correct,” Professor Lazuli said, nodding her head. She picked up a tea cake and put it on Alexis’s plate.
“A magic wand is a powerful tool. It is an item that has been left behind by a powerful mage. It carries a bit of their magic, and in a way, gained its will. It seeks out someone similar to its first master and gives them some magic or adds to their own. A truly complex magic item to be sure.”
Alexis looked down at her plate for a moment. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the magic wand. She watched as the sunlight bounced off the handle and the gemstone.
“Then, why did the wand choose me?” she asked. “How am I similar to the previous wielder?”
“That is a question I cannot answer,” Professor Lazuli said. “I did not know the previous owner nor do I know anything about this wand. But what I do know is that the wand sees something in you that you cannot see yourself. You just have to look hard enough, and I will help you.”
Alexis mulled over her words for a moment before looking back up at her.
“So, when do we start?” she asked. Professor Lazuli smiled.
“Right now,” she said. “You see, magic primarily comes from the imagination. As long as you can envision it, you can do it. For example…”
She raised her hand and her ring glowed. A sugar cube floated up and gently landed in her tea cup.
“That was a simple levitation spell. It will take sometime, but with effort, you can catch up to your classmates,” Professor Lazuli said, stirring her teacup.
“While your classmates are on their free periods, I would like you to come here. We will go over your course of action and we will see what path suits you best. How does that sound?” she asked. Alexis nodded her head in understanding.
“Excellent!” the professor said with a smile. “Now, why don’t you serve yourself some tea?”
Alexis started to reach for a creamer, but was stopped by Professor Lazuli’s hand.
“Not with your hands, but with your magic,” she said gently.
“But, you said-” Alexis started but Professor Lazuli held up a hand.
“I know, but it is better to start now than later. Now, try doing what I did,” she said, gesturing towards the sugar cube container. Alexis looked at it for a while before raising the wand. She closed her eyes and tried to imagine the cube floating through the air. She tried for a moment before opening her eyes.
“It didn't move,” Alexis said, a bit disappointed. Professor Lazuli reached out and patted her arm.
“It takes time. You’ll get there eventually. Now, shall we continue having our tea?” she said, holding up her tea cup. Alexis smiled and picked up hers. They both took a sip of their tea and ate their cakes.
“I should probably mention this, but don’t tell Lady Devlin we are serving tea with magic. She says that it goes against proper etiquette,” Professor Lazuli said with a smile and a wink. Alexis found herself laughing at that.
Later that day, Headmistress Prim’s Office
“Alessandra, are you there?” Ruri said, knocking on the door.
“Come in Ruri,” a voice came from inside. Ruri pushed open the door and she stepped in. Behind the great oak desk, Headmistress Alessandra Prim sat, looking over papers. She looked up at the teacher and gestured to one of the seats.
“How was she?” she asked. She tapped the paper in front of her. On the top of the page, it read ‘Alexis Lyndon’.
“She appears to be taking it all in stride. It was a good idea to put her in Confituremburg. Her roommates are helping her adjust and explaining everything to her.”
“Sereia Waterwhirl and Nova Glittergust, correct? That is a good thing. I’m glad that Ms. Dressler stepped up to take her in. She is the prime example of what a student of Pure Heart Academy should be.”
“I couldn't agree more,” Ruri said from her seat. “We had tea in the garden and I had her do a simple levitation spell.”
“Ruri, a levitation spell is not simple,” Alessandra said with a sigh. “It is much more complex and not easy for a first year to pull off, especially when one has not seen or used magic before.”
“I know, but I was curious,” Ruri said with a laugh. “And it's not like she couldn't do it.”
“What do you mean?” Alessandra asked.
“I mean it was subtle, but she was able to make a sugar cube float a small bit,” Ruri said, holding her fingers a small fraction from each other. “It seems she has more potential than we think she has.”
Alessandra looked thoughtful for a moment.
“Continue to help her. Monitor her progress and let me know what we can do to help her. That will be all.”
“Of course Headmistress," Ruri said, standing up and giving her a mock bow. Alessandra smiled at that and dismissed her. Ruri gave her a smirk and walked out, closing the oak doors behind her.
