A Stranger Things coincidence in a Nancy Drew book!?
Ski School Sneak
From ecstatic to exasperated
I can't even begin to express how disappointed I am right now. I just finished reading A Taste of Danger, and it gave me some serious whiplash. At first, I was overjoyed about there being a vegan character who's "more interested in saving animals than dating." As a vegan aroace myself, it really meant a lot to me to come across a character like that. However. It was incredibly upsetting when Ryan, the character in question, turned out to be the villain. It gives vegans a bad name with the way he was trying to push his vegan agenda through such horrific criminal activity. There was also another vegetarian character, Naomi, and she was also guilty of a different minor crime.
Not to sound dramatic or anything but this has seriously ruined my enjoyment of Nancy Drew books. Before today, it was my mission to read all the books in the original series. But now this has really crushed my motivation to continue.
Does anyone know of any other vegetarian or vegan characters in any Nancy Drew books? Itâs going to be even more disappointing if this ends up being the only plant-based rep in any of the books. Nancy mentioned she has some vegetarian friends so now I wonder if any of them ever actually appeared at some point?
In the past, I often judged the Nancy Drew games for having such unlikeable/unsympathetic culprits. But at least in the games, I never had this sort of problem with getting too attached to the villains.
The only other vegetarian character I've found so far was in the Clue Crew series. There were also some nice details about Nancy and her family.
Chick-napped
Cupcake Chaos
Apart from Maya, there's also Carly, a vegan. (Both are in Nancy's class.)

Queer Headcanons
Iâve been having a great time reading the ND paperbacks from the original series, but itâs kind of unfortunate that a lot of queer couple headcanons for the games wouldnât work at all in the books. Like for example, Abby is Roseâs niece, Josiah and Richard are cousins, and Jenna tried to kill Katie.
So here are a few of my queer headcanons for the books.
89 The Case of the Disappearing Deejay â Lenny Gribble had a crush on Dan, but Lenny didnât realize until a year or so later that it was a crush.
101 The Mystery of the Missing Millionairess â Claudia Dixon and Veronica Armand are roommates girlfriends.
108 The Secret of the Tibetan Treasure â Su-Lin Tung has a crush on Nancy.
137 In Search of the Black Rose â Tony DâSouza had a crush on Simon Coningsby.
166 The Case of the Creative Crime â Marco Rivera and TJ Peters are roommates boyfriends.

Storm Chaser Pete and Happy Bento Yumi
Some people might not know these exist, so here's a link to the Storm Chaser Pete blog, for Trail of the Twister. The original intern, Pete, writes about his month with the storm chasing team before getting injured and leaving. And here's a link to Yumi's blog, which also lasts for a month, before Shadow at the Water's Edge.
(The last dates of the blogs are based off the release dates of the games, not the actual time of year in the games. Trail of the Twister happens in May, and Shadow at the Water's Edge is during the summer.)
Nancy Drew has always had a queer following with George being a favorite character in the queer community I have seen. I would love to hear why you believe that is or offer some theories.
I think modern depictions of George have really solidified her place in the queer community. Thereâs a graphic novel called The Palace of Wisdom where George is canonically sapphic and has a girlfriend. Also, in The Vanishing Statue of the Diaries, itâs apparently implied that George is sapphic.
But apart from that, I think itâs cool that itâs actually Bess whoâs lesbian in that CW show. Iâd love to see more ND media where the queerness of other main characters aside from just George is explored. Because, when I think about all the main ND characters, itâs not JUST George that I could see as being queer.
I think itâs great that there are so many different versions of Nancy Drew, and that we have both the tomboy sapphic representation with George, as well as the femme sapphic representation with Bess. Whatâs next, I wonder? Maybe a Deirdre in love with Nancy? Or maybe an aromantic spectrum Nancy who realizes her true love is solving mysteries? There are so many fun possibilities.
YES! I got aro vibes from George in some of the books! (i.e., the paperbacks from the original series.)
Bess and George are meant to be opposites of each other, so if Bess is boy crazy and obsessed with romance . . . then either lesbian George or aroace George would make so much sense!
Also, George and Nancy being a queer-platonic crime-stopping duo would be amazing. (And them being the cool aunts to Bessâ kids, later down the line.)
Fredonia isnât weird (and hereâs why)
White Wolf actually isnât the first time they invented a country in Nancy Drew media. In book 157, there are two made-up countries in Eastern Europe called Rethalstan and Gorvonia. Also, in book 142, thereâs a made-up country in South America called San Valente. And way before that, in book 32, there was another made-up country called Centrovia. So, to me, the creation of Fredonia feels pretty accurate to the spirit of the books.
Bess and George: absences
I wanted to follow up with something I said in this post. I mentioned that George is more likely to get sidelined than Bess. George is actually absent almost twice as many times as Bess.
Bess is in it; George is absent
94 The Picture-Perfect Mystery 97 The Mystery at Magnolia Mansion 102 The Secret in the Dark 103 The Stranger in the Shadows 106 The Case of the Artful Crime 109 The Mystery of the Masked Rider 116 The Case of the Twin Teddy Bears (Ned replaces George) 119 The Mystery of the Missing Mascot 125 The Teen Model Mystery 144 The Email Mystery 145 The Missing Horse Mystery (Ned replaces George) 154 The Legend of the Emerald Lady (Ned replaces George) 166 The Case of the Creative Crime
George is in it; Bess is absent
82 The Clue in the Camera 113 The Secret Lost at Sea 132 The Fox Hunt Mystery 142 The Case of Capital Intrigue 149 The Clue of the Gold Doubloons 150 The Mystery at Moorsea Manor 163 The Clues Challenge (Ned replaces Bess)
My frustration with Bess
I don't know how much of an unpopular opinion this is but I personally feel that in the original series of paperbacks, Bess isn't written very well at all. And a lot of that has to do with a concerning pattern I noticed about Bess's love interests. What often happens is:
1. Bess meets a guy and becomes enamoured with him. 2. Nancy brings up the possibility that the guy could be the culprit. 3. Bess thinks there's no way the guy could be guilty, since he's so cute. 4. The guy is indeed the culprit!
This has happened a surprising number of times, and to see her crushing on the culprits so often is just really not enjoyable to read at all, in my opinion. It is seriously disappointing to see Bess portrayed this way, with her continuous misplaced trust in these random guys.
It makes Bess come across as a bad friend and a bad detective helper compared to George. And I hate that sheâs depicted as this superficial, oblivious, and biased character, who never learns from her mistakes, and doesnât take Nancyâs suspicions and advice seriously.
Hopefully Bess is written better in other ND series, like Girl Detective, and the Diaries. The original paperbacks did not do her justice and treated her like a joke.

Reading âThe Witch Tree Symbolâ for the first time rn. And like, of course itâs obvious this was written almost 70 years ago, but it still gets me sometimes. Like on the last page, I didnât skip a beat when it calls a non-living thing âqueerâ (completely aware of what the author intended) but I just read, â[Bess] was a gay companionâŚâ and have not been able to think straight for five minutes.
Like, is this Carolyn trying TO TELL US SOMETHING
Okay well now some rando just told George and that men should have menâs names and women should have womenâs names and she just laughed at him so not THAT much has changed
âHe was a man of few wordsâ
Yeah, well he coulda said a few less, ya know?
This reminds me of when Bess and George are referred to as Nancyâs girlfriends in some of the books. My brain is like: âPolyamorous sapphic Nancy confirmed!â Even though I know that wasnât really the writerâs intention.
In addition to that, I love it whenever someone refers to Nancy as an âace detective.â I know what theyâre really saying is just that sheâs a skilled sleuth, but I can pretend they actually mean the romantic orientation. đ

Joining in on that ship dynamics meme hehe
The first one is Joe x Nancy đ
(also proud x shy, and crime fighting duo)
With Bess it's interesting cuz I remember in the graphic novels Bess was characterized as being a tinkerer/mechanic. An interesting version that I dont think is talked about as much.
P.S. Also I checked it seems the post mention AI Generation for the upcoming Nancy Drew book is gone.
Oh, I know what you mean! In middle school I read the Girl Detective series where Bess was also a tinkerer/mechanic. It would be interesting to revisit that series and compare it to other portrayals of Bess. (Truthfully, I think Bess was written pretty horribly in most of the paperbacks from the the original series. I'll probably go into that more at some point.)
