Jake Sim had been lovesick for you since freshman orientation — the kind of soft, stupid, slow-building ache that made even his friends groan when he said your name.
You were an upperclassman.
Older… wiser…
Gentle in a way that felt almost dangerous, and to Jake, you were perfect.

He’d sat next to you at every icebreaker your major hosted — pretending it was coincidence, even though he absolutely timed his entrances. He carried your books for you, whenever he could snatch them from your arms.
He scribbled cheesy little notes on your coffees when you visited the café he worked at.

Jake standing outside your student share house in the pouring rain, drenched from head to toe.
His flannel clung to his chest, his dark hair plastered to his cheeks… Streams of rain slid down the bridge of his reddened nose, pooling at his jaw, dripping from the flutter of his lashes.
He looked broken. No— Desperate.
A lovesick boy on his last string.
You rushed outside with an umbrella, still barefoot, the cold wind whipping your hair, your bare feet padding against the wet pavement. Your lips parted, breath caught.
“J–Jake?!— What’re you doing? It’s freezing—”
“No! I want you to tell me—” He stepped closer, voice cracking.
“Just… tell me if this is pointless! Please just—”
Your eyes widened, heart climbing into your throat.
Jake heaved out a breath — chest rising and falling, fingers trembling.
“I know you think I’m young… and silly… but— but I—”
He scrubbed his hands through his soaked hair, choking on frustration.
“God, (Y/n), I like you.”
His voice shook.
“I like you so much it feels like—”
He searched the air like the words were hiding behind the raindrops.
“It feels like I’m sick inside.”
Lightning cracked somewhere in the distance, and Jake’s voice dropped, raw and trembling.
“I’m trying… I’ve been trying to be older. To be the kind of guy you like. I changed my clothes, I’ve been trying to read those romance novels you talk about— I— I’m trying so hard.”
You stared at him, throat tightening.
“I just need to know,” he whispered, “that you’re not… just being nice.”
“That you’re not sparing my feelings because you think I can’t handle it.”
He didn’t even notice the rain had stopped hitting him — because you’d stepped down the last step, holding the umbrella above both of you, and close enough that he could see his reflection in your eyes.
“Jake…” your voice was barely a breath.
He blinked hard, eyes glossy.
“Because I am a man,” he whispered.
“I’m not a kid, (Y/n). I’m a man who’s— who’s in love… with an incredible woman.”
And that was it…
Your heart finally cracked open.
You grabbed him by the collar of his soaked, oatmeal-colored flannel and pulled him down into a kiss — warm, soft, sweet, a rush of breath and rain and pent-up longing.
The umbrella slipped from your hands, and it clattered to the pavement but neither of you noticed.
You broke the kiss only when Jake gasped, stunned.
“I like you too, Jake,” you breathed, brushing your thumb over his cheek.
“Stop blabbering.”
Your laugh, soft and warm, sent a shiver down his spine.
Jake blinked, then he smiled — slow, disbelieving, boyish and breathtaking — and kissed you again, deeper, firmer, holding your waist like he’d dreamt of doing for two long years.
The rain kept falling.
But Jake… Jake felt like he was finally, blissfully, impossibly…home.

you sat on your bed, dressed in sweats and a tank top, legs tucked beneath you as you mindlessly scrolled through tiktok. edits and clips of heeseung flooded your feed, like they always did—your algorithm knew you far too well.
you had thought about entering the fancall. more than once, actually. but in the end, you decided against it. it felt… too much. too parasocial. your twitter account was already bad enough—did you really need to be signing up for fansigns and videocalls too?
engene were probably already sick of you. and if they were, then heeseung definitely would be.
your thoughts were cut short by the sudden buzz of your phone. an incoming facetime call lit up your screen.
‘gooners’
you snorted, answering immediately. “hello??”
a burst of shrieking excitement exploded through your speakers.
“yn. finally—it feels like we’ve been holding this in forever.”
“bee, wait! should i prop my phone up so we can record her reaction??”
your brows furrowed, a laugh slipping out despite your confusion. “what’s going on? why’re you guys acting weird?”
“rina. get. the. fucking. phone.” bianca ordered.
rustling followed.
you sat up straighter, suddenly uneasy. “you guys are scaring me. what did you do?”
“it’s recording,” rina confirmed.
“okay,” bianca started, voice suspiciously calm. “yn, we have a surprise for you. alright?”
your stomach dropped.
a surprise? that didn’t sound good.

you hesitated for half a second before doing as told, swiping out of facetime so it hovered in the corner of your screen. the groupchat opened, and an image from bianca slowly loaded, pixel by pixel, dragging out your anxiety.
then it cleared.
‘congratulations on winning enhypen 1:1 video call event!’
everything went still.
“…no way.”
“surprise!!!” they screamed.
“piss off. you did not.” you shook your head, convinced it was a joke.
“it was rina’s idea,” bianca rushed out. “we both signed you up because you wanted this, don’t even lie.”
your lips parted, then slowly curled into a smile.
they’d done this for you.
“stop… i love you guys.”
“we love you too,” they chorused.
a week later, and that excitement had turned into pure, gut-wrenching nerves.
today was the day.
you sat at your desk, your phone propped against a fake plant pot as you ran your fingers through your hair for the hundredth time.
your makeup was soft—highlighter dusted at the corners of your eyes and across the tip of your nose. brown lip liner made your lips look fuller, gloss catching the light every time you moved.
your outfit was simple but flattering. a grey button-up clung to your curves perfectly, paired with tight jeans that wouldn’t even be visible on camera—but you wore them anyway. gold jewellery rested against your skin, completing the look.
you looked like you. your best version of you.
and still, it wasn’t calming your nerves.
you’d met all seven of them before, sure—but that was different. those events were planned months in advance. you had time to rehearse, to mess up, to fix yourself before it mattered.

this was a weeks notice. immediate. intimate.
and worst of all—he knew who you were.
the twitter account. the viral post. the barking.
god.
you buried your face in your hands for a second. you felt ridiculous.
then your phone buzzed.
your heart dropped straight into your stomach.
the notification sat at the top of your screen.
it was time.
“no—no, no, no, already??” you muttered, scrambling. weren’t fancalls supposed to run late? people always said they waited hours.
why did yours have to be on time.
you stared at the accept button like it might bite you.
then, before you could overthink it any further, you pressed it.
your camera popped up instantly, your small box tucked in the corner while the main screen stayed black.
you quickly pulled down your control centre, switching on screen recording—mic included.
your heart was racing now. too fast.
your stomach twisted.
oh god—were you going to throw up?

your thoughts spiralled, breath uneven, until—light appeared.
just a sliver at first, then more, until the screen filled.
and there he was.

he looked unreal. ethereal, even.
his hair was darker now, a soft brunette that framed his face perfectly, making his doe eyes stand out even more. his skin looked flawless under the lighting, highlighter catching subtly at the same spots as yours.
a blue cardigan hung loosely over a grey shirt, earbuds resting against his collarbone as he looked down—then up.
his eyes met yours.
and he smiled.
“it’s you!” he said immediately, eyes lighting up.
your brain short-circuited.
“yes—hi!” you managed, your voice betraying your nerves.
“hi, pretty.”
your heart stuttered.
that god-forsaken nickname.
you swallowed. “how are you?”
he tilted his head slightly, studying you. “i’m okay. better now that i’ve seen my biggest fan.”
you groaned softly, covering your face for a second. “oh no—you remembered.”
“of course i did,” he laughed. “not every day someone goes viral for barking at me.”
you straightened, deadpan. “it was ai. i got hacked, actually.”
he blinked—then laughed harder, eyes crinkling at the corners.
and just like that, something in you relaxed.
the call flowed easier after that. your sarcasm slipped out naturally, your nerves easing with every laugh he gave you. he seemed genuinely entertained, leaning closer to the camera at times, like he didn’t want to miss anything you said.
and then—the timer appeared.
10 seconds.
your chest tightened.
“it was really nice talking to you,” you said softly.
his expression softened. “it really was. you’ll come see us again, right?”
you shrugged lightly, a teasing smile playing on your lips. “maybe. who knows?”
he huffed a small laugh, shaking his head. “i hope you do.”
4… 3…
“bye,” you said.
he looked straight at you.
“bye, pretty.”
and then—
the screen went black.
silence filled your room.
you let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding, reaching up to stop the recording.
your room felt—emptier now.
it was strange. he was a celebrity. someone completely out of reach.
and yet, for those few minutes, it didn’t feel like that at all.
you leaned back in your chair, staring at your phone.
you could’ve stayed on that call for hours.
and somewhere else, heeseung sat with a small, lingering smile, greeting the next fan like nothing had changed.
but the warmth in his chest?
that stayed.
and that was because of you.
and god—
what he’d give to rewind those few minutes and hear your voice all over again.
