Philosophical FAnime Thoughts
Hypothetically, if the Big One hit the Bay Area, and I was trapped in the dark with a bunch of FAnime arists, Iâd probably be fucked. Iâve been thinking a lot about this, and Iâm pretty sure this is how it would play out:
Me: Itâs really dark in here guys. I need vision.
Artist: Oh right. Hey guys, this guy needs to be deflowered.
Yes, after many deep thought experiments on FAnime and life, my FAnime scenario ends up me getting fucked in both a literal and metaphorical sense.
But I should back up a bit. The logical leap here is a bit too abrupt and needs some explaining and context...
Every year Iâve been making it a point to get commissions and browse the Artist Alley whenever FAnime rolls around. I really enjoy the creative little crafts that people make, and having some conversations with the artists to get to know them.
I really enjoy out-of-the-box thinking as well as people who are open and take things in strides. Last year I thought itâd be fun to have a common theme, yet uncommon request for all the commissions. I ended up requesting that all the commisions use only the FAnime mascots, and then ask each of the artists to also give me a reverse commission/request to make the commission request a little more entertaining. However the reverse commission ended up being a little bit awkward for some since I had essentially put them on the spot to think of something. In order to solve this awkwardness issue, I decided this year Iâd change it up a bit.
Iâve always wondered what Iâd do if I were ever stuck in a booth in the Artist Alley. When stuck in a situation I have this habit of thinking how to make it a game, and Iâve always been meaning to play a game with other artists in the hypothetical scenario that I were to get stuck in the same room with a bunch of artists.Â
Fortunately, I discovered what this game was to be early last year when I was introduced to the game of Telestrations. Essentially it is a game of Telephone, except that the players alternate between writing and drawing the word or phrase on a notecard.
This resulted in me asking a set of artists draw a picture based off a word/phrase the previous artist before them chose. The game was split up into two teams where each team would draw a sequence of pictures, but the words would be chosen by the opposing team. My instructions to each were as follows:
1) If they were familiar with the game of Pictionary.
2) Show them a notecard with the word/phrase to draw
3) Request that it be Anime/FAnime themed and to be as literal or metaphorical as they want.
Once the picture drawn, Iâd swap pictures with the other team and have them guess what was drawn, which be used as the next drawing prompt for the artist next in line.
Iâm really glad that several of the artists got a kick out of it and even offered to do some of the drawings for free, and even offer artist recommendations to join in. I mostly chose artists that had commissions that didnât exceed the $20 range, and looked for all types of styles to make the game interesting. Iâll include more of my own commentary in the subsequent posts.
Anyway the tldr; of all this is that when telling an artist to draw the word âvisionâ the final word ended up being âdeflower,â and now you know the story of why I will get fucked when the ceiling comes falling down and I get stuck with a bunch of artists.
All things considered, I guess thatâs not the worst way to go out...
