!! ART TUTORIAL 2 !!

This is my 2nd art tutorial, i’ve only ever done one of these before, and it went amazingly well on tumblr you guys all seemed to love it and I get so many asks for another one!

I hope you like this one just as much, it’s been almost a year and thought my style rarely evolves, my techniques and quality has!

19 days late let’s go. This is a quick tutorial on my process for concept art, this works for both character and environmental design.

READ: I’m serious start reading concept art books, from stuff you enjoy of course. I’m into film so I look into Disney/Pixar art books mostly and learn how these artists create their work. The process and thought behind it is the most important. Don’t just copy what they do, actually break it down and study it properly. I subscribed to Scribd for this.

Moodboard: I assume you have an idea of what you want to design, now it’s time to get a feel for it. Create a moodboard, which is not about the designs, but the overall feeling of what you want. Gather any images and have this up when you are designing. The point is to focus on the feeling the audience will get when looking at your work. This is part of the moodboard I made for Skull-Kidz! A dark, purplish world influenced by Halloween, anime and action.

Tip: Have an equal mixture of both real life images and artists influences. Download PureRef, when you get the chance, it’s a great program.

Research and References: Look at real life references when designing and try to keep artist influences at a minimum or not at all. For Salem I took a trip on Google-Maps and went to the Czech Republic, Mont Saint Michel and Brooklyn for references. I wanted Salem to have a creepy, crowded, castle vibe mixed with old European architecture.

Tip: There’s nothing bad about looking at other artist’s work, but when you design from it you run the risk of making generic, or unoriginal designs. Don’t worry this is a common rookie mistake, you need to find your own interpretation/style of stuff.

Thumbnails: It’s time to make small drawings of what you’re designing as quickly as you can. There’s no bad ideas, just get it down, only keep in mind the feeling/shape of what you want. A towering city of lanterns, that has a certain trapped and bleakness nature to it, is what I was going for with Salem. I mixed lanterns, chandeliers, spiderwebs, trees, bird cages, with the original references to create something unique.

Sketch: Pick the thumbnail you like the best and roll with it, making a bigger version of it but still quite rough. Once you have the overall look of your design you can get to refining and tweaking it.

Some people have been asking me what are the brushes (SAI) I use and… here they are. Since my English is SO poor I could not explain how I work with those brushes, so I decided to use only images, snif.

Mmm, in summary, these are the brushes I use and some examples of how I paint with them (my art is so inconsistent that my way of painting varies according to my mood, LOL). I’m really sorry for not being able to answer all your questions 😭 I hope this helps someone 💜

Awesome ask! Ok here’s what I can share:

Those are all the brushes I use for rough painting. I only dig out others when I have a specific effect I want to achieve, like clouds or particles. Sadly I am not completely sure that I sorted all of these into the correct brush pack, apologies!The good news is that I didn’t create any of these, so your faith is not dependant on me in any way. The bad news is that not all of these are for free, but they’re definitely worth it!Shiyoon Kim’s Ink Brushes: Ok so these are basically the best brushes ever?? Some of you might know Shiyoon, he’s a character designer working for Disney, he worked on Tangled, Big Hero 6 and most recently Zootopia, where he mainly designed Gazelle and her tigers. Those are the brushes you see when you look at his gorgeous artwork, and its amazing that you can even find these online! They’re pretty much all 100% opaque brushes with an inky texture. I use them all the time for both sketching and painting. They are mostly responsible for the acrylic-like feel when you look at the charlie image.Aaron Blaise’s Custom PS Brush set 1: Another gorgeous brush set by a Disneyartist which you can buy online. I mostly use the 7 and the 8, they have a pencil-like texture, but are also really well suited for shading, I found. You can see them at work on the highlights on Abe’s shoulder. Most of the overall grainy texture of that image is also due to these brushes.Walid Feghali’s Concept Art Brush Pack: This is an essential pack for speedpainting. It has a TON of great brushes for Clouds and grease, and some that just have an amazing texture to them. I also use two airbrushes which I think are from him, one which is more precise and less smooth, and one that is super smooth and more of a gradient than an actual shape. Both have their use and are amazing. Also keep an eye out for these brushes, they’re basically the best of the bunch:
