it takes a second for everything to sink in for carol. she wasnโt sure what helenโs answer was going to be. If she was being honest, she didnโt even know what she wanted it to be. on one hand, maybe it was for the best that they stay apart, carolโs crush wasnโt going to go anywhere good and she highly doubted the other woman felt the same. it was safer for both of them if they just stayed friends. maybe carol would never let herself be truly happy, she would just be a fantasy author who never married, who just focused on her career - that wouldnโt be completely unheard of.ย
they had never had a normal professional relationship, not in the slightest. they had pretended they did in front of everyone else when they were sober, but the rest of the time carol knew that they were always crossing some sort of line. it was on the blonde for assuming it could be the same forever. that she could have helen without actually having her.ย
carol could have agreed, keeping up the lie that she was straight and that she wasnโt interested in the brunette, but instead she steps closer to helen, words flowing out of her mouth quicker than she can stop them. she watches the way that the other womanโs lip quivers and it breaks her heart, even with how scared she was. โthe dates were a lie. iโm sorry i -โ she doesnโt know how to just come out and say it. carol had wanted to be happy for her as well, but she wasnโt. โyou were going on all of these dates and i didnโt want you to pity me because i wasnโt. there were no guys. there never was." she can feel herself almost trembling with nervousness. "please don't shut me out."
it takes her a moment longer than it should to register and in that moment, she's grateful she isn't holding glass because she knows she would drop it. the dates were a lie. it plays over and over in her mind as carol continues to speak and she finds herself fixed on the fact that she had been jealous over nothing, that all of the feelings of being wrong about carol weren't as warranted as she thought they were. she didn't have to be upset that there was something proving that she was straight.
"i don't get why you lied, i never pitied you. you know i didn't." at least, she thought she did. there wasn't pity over that, it was pity over the fact that carol was dating men when it felt like it didn't fit her. her hand reaches up to rub at her temples, processing all the information and trying to make sense of it. "did you do it because i started dating again?" it's an accusation she shouldn't make, the world didn't revolve around her, she just felt like it was too much of a coincidence to ignore and she was tired of ignoring everything that nagged at her when it came to carol.
she can see the way the blonde trembles and she swallows the lump that builds in her throat, thinking about how easy it could be to move on with this woman on valentine's day, someone that was available and not slip into the lack of promise that there was with carol. she grabs her hand and pulls her in close, wrapping her arms around her, "i won't, i shouldn't have. i just.." she shakes her head, "forget it, it doesn't matter, just don't lie to me again. i shouldn't have acted like that because you had a life outside of me." she had too much fun with her, a life that wasn't sustainable to have where they would only ever be friends, it would come to an end if she was dating and helen didn't want to face it. she didn't want to lose carol to a man or to anyone if she was being honest with herself.

maybe itโs the drinks, or maybe itโs just annoyance and frustration surrounding the fact that no matter what carol does, thereโs a mental and emotional block when it comes to being herself. in another life, she could have flirted back, instead of looking uncomfortable and quickly excusing herself. in another life, she could have been with helen instead. their conversation would then include jokes and a sense of relief that they found each other, instead of the jealously that she could tell was lacing the other woman's tone.
carol can tell it bothers helen and she can't seem to figure out why. if they were sober, she would have moved on, claimed she was straight, and changed the subject. but there's something about it that bothers her, triggering her already weak emotional regulation. "that doesn't mean that women aren't into me." she rolls her eyes, letting out a deep sigh. "god, helen. do you want her to kiss you? is that it?" she's overreacting, hoping deep down that the brunette denies it.
as many arguments as she can pick and win when it comes to carol, any that came up about someone else's interest in the blonde was never one she could win without pulling the string that kept their banter going. it would make it all real what the late nights they spent together meant, when her arm would wrap around carol as if it was meant to be there, it would matter. helen knows that it already does despite what she tells herself and she can feel the rage bubble up beneath the surface at the reminder that women are still into carol, that the other woman isn't into them.
she shouldn't expect the blonde's stance to change on dating women, it wasn't going to and it's what fuels her response. "i do want to kiss a woman tonight, god forbid one of us get laid." it's spiked by the heat of the moment and helen knowing that the hope of anything more was still gone, nothing had changed as much as she hoped it would, she was alone in the feelings she had. "she's not my type." she shrugs it off as her breathing settles again and she moves to take another shot, swiping it from the bar, disregarding how unsafe it was to do so.
they didnโt get to watch golden girls the night before either. traveling out with other clients was a huge part of helenโs job and at this point she should be used to it, but it was never not such a lonely feeling to be home alone for this long. it led to too many moments with just her thoughts and that was never good when it came to carol. helen keep her afloat, she kept her stable.
she feels a familiar ache in her body as she hears helen's voice, that throbbing getting louder as she notices the slight buzzing in the background. "something like that." carol hums, hands moving upwards to pull off her own shirt, the cold air hitting exposed skin. "how much do you miss me?" she knew the answer, but she wanted to hear it.
with the photo, she can imagine what she looks like laying there. the thought is enough to cause a hitch in her throat, heat moving up into her cheeks. she imagines that helen is the one undressing her as she moves to take her pants off as well, ears listening intently to the phone.
it was rare for carol to be as patient as she was, not that she was quiet about it through her texts and calls. still, helen felt that she deserved something for only complaining half as much as she did when she took business trips that were significantly shorter. it was progress, especially with helen's inability to keep her commitment of making sure they watched golden girls together.
"you can hear it, can't you?" her voice is hoarse with desire and she knows that any satisfaction she gets from tonight is only a fraction of what she needs, knows that hearing carol come undone first is what she really needs to push her over the edge.
"you're canceling at least one of your meetings when i get back with what i'm planning." it was a meeting that could be pushed back, one that she wasn't necessarily involved in, but knows that she didn't want to leave the house for at least a couple days unless it was absolutely necessary. "the real question is how much do you miss me? is it bad enough that you'll be awake early when i get there?" it was proven that she would push jet lag off as much as she could, that her need to take care of her wife would always prevail when it came down to it.

"you only win when i'm drunk you know." most of the games carol picked were ones that made her drink when she lost and she's sure it was because all of the rules in the games they played were ones that carol had to make up. still, she would play every time because she knew it was something that always made carol happy. that wasn't something just anyone was able to see in passing, it wasn't something helen would take for granted.
"you think you can win gin rummy? not a chance." she smirks as she leans in and moves to grab the cards, "i'll let you shuffle, i know you're no magician. whoever wins buys dinner." there's confidence in her tone as she leans against the chair that she's sitting in, knowing she'll end up on the bed before they even start the game. "you do know how to play, don't you?" there's condescension dripping in her tone, smugness written across her features and the taste of victory waiting at her fingertips.
over the years she had realized that feeling completely like herself was a privilege. it was something she was only ever afforded when no one but helen was looking. every small piece of makeup that was moved off her skin felt like a reward, carol almost basking in the feeling of the cold air from the bathroom fan hitting her skin. in the morning they would do all of this over again and carol would spend the whole day yearning for this exact moment, when her wife would make her feel seen and loved.ย
โthatโs because youโre the one pampering me.โ she says simply, knowing that helen enjoyed it too. carol never asked for anything, she never wanted to be seen as a burden. the blonde wanted to do everything for herself, but their dynamic was different. helen had the wonderful gift of presenting things as if they were carolโs idea all along, and it worked. โmaybe if you did my nails, iโd like it.โ she still wouldnโt, but she loved to kiss up to her wife.ย "actually no. i take it back. please don't make me go through that."
she was lucky and she knew that, even if she was always the first one to complain. โdonโt say that because you know i would.โ or she would attempt. it would end up kind of bad, but it would be endearing. or so she hopes. "no, they're lucky. i do all of this crap for them. only enjoyment i get is spending more time with you."
a smile spreads across her face, a mischievous look in eyes as she opens them. "you love it." carol knows she does. helen could tease her all she wanted and call her the most annoying person who had ever lived, but she knew the truth. her wife put up with more than carol thought she deserved. "thank you, baby. is that what you want to hear?" she watches her, titling her head back down so that they made direct eye contact again. "you're not always right, though."
helen knows what it means to her wife to have someone else take care of her, even in an act so simple it would only take the blonde two minutes or less if she was in a rush. she takes her time as she does it, letting her feel every swipe of it, letting her skin breathe slowly and appreciating it more when she was completely bare of any foundation, blush or eye makeup that weighed her down throughout the day. it didn't take her long to see that it was a burden to carol, one she didn't have to do, even if it made it feel like to fans she was putting in the effort.
"you barely let me pamper you." unless it was in the bedroom, then carol allowed for a lot more pampering and helen wouldn't complain about it because she liked giving her wife every bit of pleasure she wouldn't voice that she needed. she laughed at the suggestion of doing her nails, "that was never going to happen, you would mess them the same day." same hour, forgetting that she had to wait for her nails to dry and dipping her hand into a bag of cotton rounds. "i wouldn't put me through that, for the record." there's a smile that tugs at her lips, while she meant it, she also never wanted her wife to feel like a burden for asking for things.
"i would let you do my foundation, maybe.." anything else, she wasn't sure she'd be able to walk out of the house feeling confident. carol knew the basics and she could do it well, but she feels like she'd poke her eye out if she tried to do her mascara. "i thought you would be sick of me the second we moved in together." there's an eyebrow cocked as she continues clearing her skin, checking to make sure all of it is removed.
she won't deny that she loves how loud carol is for her, it's almost as if it's the one place the blonde can't deny the way she feels about her, how much she needs her. "i do, but you're still a brat." it's her way of showing her affection and knows her wife responds to it well, her eyes are light as carol finally caves and thanks her. "it is and i am always right, name one time i wasn't." though, she doesn't give her chance as she closes the distance between them and presses her lips to the blonde's.

she had seen men hit on carol and while she might have been protective every now and then and hearing about her on dates with them might have bothered her. seeing the blonde with a woman that was clearly flirting with her made it impossible to bite back the jealousy that came out in her tone, that made her posture defensive even with the drink she had going through her system. it wasn't enough, but there was no point in getting to the point she didn't care where she could lean into her when it never went anywhere.
"it doesn't." she scoffs, trying to get away from the topic at hand, away from the sting that was inflicted there. "i just thought you weren't into women." she's surprised that carol doesn't correct her or reminder her that she was straight then, like she always did. it shouldn't make her think that maybe she just wasn't into her, with the way she'd move a step away from her if she dared get that close while they were sober (being drunk was always a different story.)

she had a complicated relationship with self pleasure, which was a given with how a lot of her life had gone. for a long time when she thought about it, only guilt came to mind, reminding her of the memories associated with growing up in a household that put shame above everything else. it reminded her of freedom falls - of the loud shame that was placed upon her that it was wrong to think about other women like that. even when she shed the heaviness of being with women physically, her relationship to being the one to make herself feel pleasure was full of thinking she wasn't deserving. that it was somehow still wrong to have any desire at all that was completely her choice and hers alone.
helen had been patient when it came to moments like that, often time in more ways than carol thought she sometimes deserved. it had taken years for that embarrassment to ease up, the blonde always having to remind herself that it was something that was not only enjoyable for herself, but that there was always a sense of pride coming from her wife surrounding carol letting go of her shame.
there's a reminder of that as she watches helen spread her open further, catching the look of amusement flashing across her face. her wife was enjoying this and it only causes more warmth to move throughout her body, fingers pushing deeper inside of herself.
her hips push forward, trying to gather all the friction she could. carol can't help the moans that continued to spill out, fingers now curled, hitting the perfect spot. her other hand reaches out for her wife, a pleading look on her face.
what she needed was helen. but she knows if she asks, the other woman would tell her the same thing. she had to wait. this had to be all her. "i need you to take off your clothes." she pants, head lifting off the bed to get a better look at her. sometimes carol still felt shame, but the pure lust in the moment pushed it to the background, only caring about the safety that she felt around helen. nothing else mattered.
she eased carol into it initially, dropping her own hand between her thighs once as she made eye contact with her while prompting her to do what made her feel good because it would make her come. she loved playing on how much carol loved to please, it was the only reason that they got to this point over time. there was never any judgment, desire was there, but it was never the reason why she wanted carol to do this - it was always for carol's benefit rather than her own. she needed it, it was a step in accepting what she needed and giving it to herself, it was one thing carol could have if she didn't have her.
it takes restraint that she's practiced over the years not to move forward and replace carol's fingers with her own because she knew how to get her wife there like it was second nature by now. her eyes darken as her thumb strokes at the inside of her knee as she watches her, keeping her hand there without giving her wife the impression she's going to save her then, she was flushed and even without being inside her, she knew it wouldn't take much more.
helen knows by now that it takes a lot for carol to ask her for anything, especially in a moment where she knows she's not going cave in and finish what she started. her hand releases from the blonde and she sheds her blazer and heels, letting both fall to the floor before she starts to unbutton her blouse, revealing a black bra that accentuated her cleavage perfectly. she unbuttons her slacks and kicks them off as she crawls onto the bed beside her.
she licks her lips as she watches her wife, her hand reaching behind her to unclasp her bra as she she rose onto her knees, straddling nothing. she slowly lets her bra fall onto the bed as she reaches over and spreads her wife just a little more open. "you're doing so good, baby." she could've teased, but she knows when carol needs praise in place of it.
"you can pick anything you want me to do to you after, you deserve it. anything, i mean it. " she didn't want her wife to hold back on what she really wanted and giving her a reward after she made herself come was always a good opportunity to give it to her in her mind. she was willing to try anything with carol and stop when she didn't, it's why they were so in tune with each other.

carolโs still as she feels the wipe continue to move across her skin, one of her hands almost impatiently resting on the sink. if thereโs one thing thatโs constant, itโs that she always canโt wait for this to be over. โyou donโt want me to be quiet anyways, i know you.โ through the pretend annoyance and the roll of her eyes, carol knew that helen would much rather hear her vent and talk about nonsense than anything else. โi canโt even completely see your face right now and i know iโm right.โ
she's grateful for every swipe of the makeup wipe that reveals more and more of the woman she loved, more of the woman that only she got to see like this. there's a privilege in being the only person in the world carol trusts enough to see her like this, to see her in a tank top completely comfortable in her skin next to her in their bed. she was the only one that knew how much carol could be teased before it went too far and was the only one that could get away with it, too.
"i bet, for someone that doesn't like getting your nails done, you sure do love getting pampered." she smirks, as carol's head tilts up and she swipes across her jawline to remove the contour she placed there earlier and shift to her neck, swiping down as she watched her.
"maybe you would, maybe you should do mine at some point just to prove it." it's teasing of course, she does enough for both of them and she didn't mind it, not when it gave carol some relief from having to wear makeup at all. "you know you're just lucky that all your signings are at night so you have some wiggle room when i'm out of town." at every event, helen made sure she was there even if another client was there and it was clear she'd never do any of this for them. she'd suggest that they get a makeup artist.
a sigh without any weight escapes her lips, "what am i going to do with you?" a smile tugs on her lips at the way that carol drones on. "you can't even be quiet when i need you to, you should be thanking me for soundproofing the bedroom." though, it became clear that it would've been a better idea if they did the entire house with how impatient carol could be. "you're more annoying than right, you must know that." she shook her head as she wiped the rest of the makeup off her neck. "you can open your eyes now, i'm almost done."
