hello my studious peeps and may the fourth be with you! just finished my last ap test, us government, so i thought i’d share some of my notes on the basics. i’m just relieved to finally have this weight off my shoulders and can focus on improving my norwegian and french, both of which have been slacking.

Apples - the peel of the apples includes a powerful antioxidant called quercetin that enhances memory function

Avocados - promotes brain health and contributes to healthy blood flow

Berries - such as blueberries, cherries and even grapes have a direct effects on brain function. It contains antioxidants that improve blood flow to the brain and enhance neural activity

Broccoli - great source of vitamin K - enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower

Dark chocolate - has a powerful antioxidant which includes several natural stimulants that enhance focus and concentration

Extra Virgin Olive Oil - has a powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols that improve learning and memory

Eggs - more specifically the yolks, leading source of choline which is a precursor for acetylcholine - neurotransmitter involved in helping you remember things

Fish - have Omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to proper neural function. According American Journal of Clinical Nutrition - reduce risk of dementia as you get older

Nuts - rich source of vitamin E

Onions - ability to improve important brain function like memory and focus

Oatmeal - reduce risk for heart disease and promotes good flow to the organ system which includes the brain

Rosemary - contains carnosic acid that helps protect the brain from neurodegeneration; protects the brain against chemical free radicals

Salmon - omega-3 fatty acids to help keep your brain running smoothy and improve memory

Tomatoes - contains lycopene that could help protect against the kind of free radical damage to cells which occurs in the development of dementia

Turmeric - helps boost antioxidant levels and keep your immune system healthy; improves brain’s oxygen intake, keeping  you alert and able to process information

Duolingo: This is great for learning translation between German and English/other languages. 

Memrise: I know most people use it for vocabulary, but I used it to learn the principal part of verbs. For example, I would put  to begin on one side then anfangen - fing an on the other side. 

Deutschakademie [iOS] [Android]: This app offers exercises by grammar topic and is suitable for beginners as well as advanced learners as it goes to C1. 

German Class [iOS] [Android] : This app provides you with vocabulary drills, grammar explanations, and various exercises. The demo is free but the full app is $3.

German Listening [Android]: Listen to German articles read out loud.

HelloTalk: If you want to talk to native speakers, this is a great app. You can choose to text or call within the app, and have them correct your texts.

Learn German [iOS] [Android]: App designed by the Goethe Institute meant for beginners. It helps you learn vocabulary by theme in an interactive story way. 

Adventure German [iOS] [Android]: An interactive game where you must find a stolen item. This is was also developed by the Goethe Institute and is meant for high beginners as well as low intermediate students. This is a fun way of improving your vocabulary and reading comprehension.

A Mysterious Adventure [iOS] [Android]: This is mystery game by the Goethe Institute meant for intermediate students as it is all in German. You play as a woman trying to solve a mystery. I enjoyed playing the game and it helped my listening/reading comprehension.

Der Die Das [Android Only]: App meant to help you learn the correct articles of German words.

Listening/Videos

Slow German: Podcast that is slowly read to improve your listening comprehension in German.

FluentU: Interactive video website where you watch videos with the subtitles in both languages and learn through immersion. This is a paid service, but you can get a free trial.

Yabla: Similar to above, but cheaper. Also has a 2-week trial period if you want to try it.

Bodowartke: Listen to songs in different German dialects.

Lyricstraining: Learn German through song lyrics. You listen to a song and fill in the blank according to your level of the language.

NatifyMe: Learn German through videos. You can choose their videos or upload your own to make video flashcards of vocabulary.

Sounds of Speech: This is a phonetics teaching tool that teaches you German pronunciation with animations 

Verbs & Grammar

Verbix: Verb conjugator.

Verben: Verb conjugation practice.

Verbformen: Verb conjugator

Canoo: Dictionary of German inflection.

Cheatography: Make your own German cheat sheets about cases/vocabulary such as the one linked. 

Vocabulary

Babadum: Vocabulary game

Linguee: A dictionary tool where you can see words and their definitions in different contexts.

Tatoeba: Look up a sentence/word and see how people have translated it.

Quizlet: Look up or make your own vocabulary lists in German. There are many ways provided for you to learn.

Reading/Immersion

Polyglot Project: Read literature in German and then click on words you do not know to translate them

Readlang: Read various texts and watch youtube videos with the text in sync. You translate any words you do not know.

Lingualy: Read articles in German by different topics and then translate any words you do not know. Those words are then added to your collected words and you can review them later.

Clozemaster: A sentence game where you learn language in context and choose the word that fits in the sentence. 

Lang-8: Write in German and have it corrected by native speakers. 

Influent: A language learning video game where you learn vocabulary by acting as a character exploring a house. It is fun and has different modes to learn the words. Cost is $10 but can be $3 during the sales in winter and summer.

German Stories: Read fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers in a dual language format

1. learning is better than knowing. you don’t need to be a genius to do well in school, only dedicated enough to actively pursue your education. 

2. straight A’s =/= intelligence. don’t let your grades define you; test grades can’t capture the passion in your eyes and the resilience in your bones.

3.  friendships change, but sometimes that's a good thing. some relationships are bested by time, and people grow apart. in the absence of others, you may find that you’ve been missing out on what’s been right in front of you the entire time. 

4. rest is important. your health is always more important than school. while stress is inevitable, never be afraid to take a day off, or talk to a trusted adult. Mental health is just as valid as physical health.
