I deadass just learned something new today, specifically about a disorder that I didn’t even know Brandon and Philip high-key fall under and it’s so interesting to me so imma just talk about it.
This disorder I’m talking about is Folie à Deux, french for ‘madness of two’, and also referred to as ‘shared psychotic dodisorder’ (SPD)
It’s described as the shared psychosis between two people in a close relationship. In which one of the individuals has a pre-existing established delusion or mental illness and influences the other to adopt the same false beliefs.
“The primary, or inducer, in the relationship holds the original delusional belief, and then the secondary, or induced, in the relationship comes to share the delusion.”
In this case, it’s clear to see that Brandon is the Inducer (AKA Primary/Dominant figure) within this relationship.
Because 1) we already know that he has a mental disorder, he’s a psychopath. And 2) it’s stated he had this crazy belief about a tiny elite superior society ever since prep-school, which began from the ideas of his housemaster, Rupert Cadell, who festered those ideas in his head.
So Philip’s the one who’s being Induced (AKA Secondary/Submissive) within this relationship. As we see in the books it tells us he grows to adopt Brandon’s delusions. His views, his attitude, etccccc.
There was like two diagnosis criteria’s (I think😟) for this disorder :
And just by reading it all, Brandon and Philip literally fit the shoe.
- It’s been implied they’re literally husbands.
- Known each other since prep-school
- Said that Brandon influenced Philip to share the same beliefs ( in the book ver )
- Was never shown or said that Philip had a mental disorder prior meeting him.
I’ve also learned that there’s 4 subtypes to Folie à Deux:
- folie imposée (imposed)
- folie simultanée (simultaneous)
- folie communiquée (communicated)
- folie induite (induced)
And out of all of these subtypes, I feel like Brandon and Philip fall under the most common one, which is Folie imposed.
I’ll just drop the thing I read that explains it best✌🏾:
It’s literally describing them-
++ Also it’s mentioned that social isolation is a major risk factor for this disorder.
Reading the book, I think it’s safe to say that Brandon high-key did isolated Philip in a way.
In prep-school, Philip and Brandon definitely had to have been each other’s only friend friend ( before they became a thing ofc )
Brandon basically took Philip in once his farther passed away.
Swayed him into the same college as him.
And then got a whole place together👹
