Project 42

Teen poets, writers, thespians, musicians, dancers, and everything in between: come to the next Project 42 Open Mic on Saturday, November 17th at 1:00 pm at the Barrington Public Library! Get up on stage and read or perform in a supportive environment, or just come and watch your friends. We will be doing theater improv games as well, if time permits. ****Please [email protected] or post here if you wish to perform; we might not have time for you otherwise!  Artists, arrive early to hang art in the Teen Room or to submit it for publication on our blog. 

The room is encased in darkness, the only light emanating from a flashlight clenched between the teeth of a teenage girl.  Pencil scratches against paper and the occasional flipping of pages fills the room with the quiet roar of creativity turned sound.  Shelves line the walls, filled to bursting with books that have been poured over, loved, clutched in the semi-darkness upon completion while its owner reevaluates the world, which goes on spinning, unchanged.  The corner of the room boasts a precarious stack of books, haphazardly having been formed into a tower, yet each book’s location known to she who matters.  Threatening to topple at any given moment, all of them wait unread, eager with the promise of one day being held and cherished like so many before.  Quotes, clippings and pictures of authors adorn the walls and litter the desk with inspirational words and encouragement to the reader, to the writer.  Head bent low, bangs long ago forgotten partially cutting off her vision, she pushes on.  She uses the wrong tenses and misspells half the words in her frantic effort to put thought to comprehensible phrases.  Slash marks agonizingly fill the page and she makes mistakes.  She continues anyway.  As the red glow of the alarm clock blinks with each passing second and a cell phone lights up with messages from the outside, the girl persists in her plight to change the world one word at a time.  

It's a way to get more art, writing, people's work up here and encourage you to submit.  It's called: "Project 42 Tag: Nerds Can Run Too."  Here's how it works:  I'll start this ball rolling and submit some of my work.  I then tag someone and they have to submit something.  Then they tag someone.  They don't even have to be in P42, bring them to the party!  So I'm going to submit!  And then tag!  Let this game begin!  And let's hope it works!

I'm sorry.  I'm back.  HELLO!  If anyone is willing to help me moderate this.  Let me know.  If you have any submissions.  PLEASE SUBMIT! I have an idea which I will address in another post following this.  But I have lots of ideas.  Okay!  Nerd away!

Today Project 42, as I mentioned earlier, had it's first branching out meeting.  We had what I consider a decent turnout and we had a blast.  It was an open mic so we had people reading their writings, dancers, singers, and improv (ers?).  It was a great time and we hope that next time we get a ton more people to show up.  Because, yes, there will be a next time.  We also discussed the possibility of an exhibition which is coming up (Fingers crossed) in the future which is a big undertaking but we are more than determined.  Speaking of which, if you live in the Rhode Island area and want to be a part of this upcoming exhbition, want to hang your art in the gallery we're starting in the Barrington Public Library, want to come to our next Open Mic Night or just want more information, just shoot me and ask and I will be more than happy to oblige.  Project 42 is just getting on its feet and I want as many to come and be a part.  So please do.

I know that not a ton of people follow this.  I know it's probably just the three of us, maybe four.  But here's the realization I've come to: we had our first real reaching / branching out meeting today, and there were maybe eighteen of us, most of us actually being on the board, but (and here's the realization) it didn't and doesn't matter.  Numbers are just that: numbers.  If only one other person had come we would have done everything in the world for that one person.  Project 42 is more than just numbers.  The only number that matters is one; being one group, doing one thing after another to get one ball rolling.  So I'm going to post more often and have Alex figure out an online gallery.  I write like there's many of you, even though that probably isn't the case.  But I'm sorry I didn't put every effort into it just because I was discouraged that numbers were low.  So here I am and I won't give up on you, I promise.  Hold me to that.
