     He’s a star, and you’re his satellite. He’s lost, somewhere out in the vastness of the universe, and you’re sending signals to find him, never knowing if they’ll reach him. They are prayers and they are desperate.

     Your hands bleed from wringing them, and from clawing at the Earth to demand he comes back to the home he never knew he had. The one with you. The one where you erase the last few chapters, and when he tells you he loves you, you say it back. When they wrote your story, you always knew it would be a tragedy, but you’d hoped they’d spare him the same.

      You remember huskin’ corn down in Indiana. Dad was gone a lot that year. Job didn’t pay for shit, but helped you get by when the money was tight. And money was always tight. 

      You spent fifty cents tryin’ to win your pops a watch out of one of those claw machines. You don’t say ‘I love you’ in families like yours. Practical gifts are permitted. A bottle of beer, a candy bar from the grocery store, given’ your kid brother the last bowl of Lucky Charms.

      You didn’t win the watch. You won a medallion instead with an angel on it. Said ‘angels are watching over you’, same thing your mom used to say before she died. You tossed the coin in the river. Used it to make a wish. The angel hears you, but it’s not your time yet. The world isn’t ready for you.

Crowley’s machinations, the Mark of Cain, and Death itself cannot and will not stop him from rescuing Dean again.

Castiel knows Dean better than anyone besides his brother, Sam. And he will bring Dean home, no matter the cost.

The grass is dewy and cool at his back, soaking into feverish skin. Cas’ fingers tangle in his hair. Dean’s heart thuds in his chest when Cas leans down to kiss him, curious tongue touching his lower lip like it wants permission.

Dean unfolds under Castiel, and the air grows thick and electric. He tips his head back, frightened, excited, gripping Cas like an anchor. He looks up, into the inky black of Cas’ wings, stars in the night sky, and revels in the warm puff of breath at his throat.

Dean has nightmares, sometimes, about the crypt. Sometimes, it’s just a replay of events: the sickening crunch of bone, blood in his eyes, clutching onto Cas with his failing strength. Thinking he was finally going to die.

Other times, though, the nightmare starts in the crypt, but slides sideways in the manner of dreams and becomes the bunker, and Dean is watching Cas leave again. Dean thinks maybe “don’t do this,” wasn’t a clear plea for Cas to stay, just like “I need you,” wasn’t an “I love you.”

Everyone present, including the stripper, considered it a cute joke. A playful deviancy, because that’s what Alphas are in some circles. A dirty joke. A whispered desire. Something to indulge in but avoid in real life, unless under pain-stakingly controlled circumstances.

“So serious,” Gabriel sighs. “It’s not like I’ll be able to order you a stripper again any time soon. Try to cheer up a bit.”

Castiel obliges, but can tell it’s more of a grimace than anything else. It’s rare for him to show nerves outwardly, but they’re starting to bleed through. Easy enough for Gabe to pick up on, but then that’s exactly why he’s been needling him.

“We kinda know this guy, right? Dean wasn’t a dick. Not when we were kids.”

“Which was a long time ago,” Castiel says. “But mother approves of the marriage, so everything will work out perfectly.”
