We didn't sign a declaration to find homes from the 1770s, but it wasn't easy to sort through centuries of construction to spot these Colonial-era gems.
In pursuit of happiness, we turn to our favorite subject: vintage homes. We didn't need to sign a declaration to pinpoint nine homes built in the 1770s, but it isn't exactly easy to sort through centuries of construction to uncover these Colonial-era gems.
All nine of the national treasures below are available for a buyer who yearns to live in a historic home. Many of these 1770s-era structures have original details intact—so buyers can expect to find wide-plank hardwood floors, imposing wood beams criss-crossing the ceiling, and lots and lots of fireplaces.
If you're intrigued by the idea of declaring independence from the creature comforts of tract homes, scroll down and let freedom ring.
Plenty of holidays—the Fourth of July, Memorial Day—might inspire you to hang a U.S. flag around the home. But there are laws on how you should do this.
Plenty of holidays (the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and more) might inspire you to hang a flag around the home. Only watch out: There are laws—yes, laws—on how to hang the U.S. flag, all outlined in the official United States Code governing respect for the flag.
"A lot of people don't realize that there are public laws pertaining to displaying the flag," says Michael Buss, deputy director of the Americanism Division of the American Legion. Some flag-hanging rules you may already be aware of (e.g., never let a flag touch the floor), but many others may come as a surprise. As proof, just check out the photos below showing the American flag displayed by well-meaning people in ways that, technically speaking, aren't up to code. To be clear, we aren't here to shame anyone, and violators are in no danger of being arrested or fined; we're just letting you know that these could be seen as disrespectful or ignorant by those in the know. Cool? OK, then, let's all learn something!
Mistake No. 1: Don't display the stars on the wrong side
One big flag faux pas that people miss is that in displaying the flag from a wall or window, the Union (the blue field with stars) should be on the observer's left side. So the display in the photo below should be flipped, with the stars on the left side.
New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has sold his mansion in Boca Raton for $1.2 million—exactly the same price he paid for it five years ago.
New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has sold his 5,433-square-foot mansion in Boca Raton, FL, for $1.2 million—exactly the price he paid for it five years ago.
The 28-year-old defensive stud grew up 10 miles south of Boca, in Deerfield Beach, FL. At a Fourth of July party there two years ago, he badly mangled his right hand in a fireworks accident. Doctors amputated one of his fingers and reconstructed the rest of his hand using skin grafts. Four months after the accident, he returned to the field and played through the pain with a padded club.
Shortly before the accident, he put his Boca home on the market with high hopes of snagging a buyer at $2.1 million. He sliced the price in 2016 to $1.7 million, and then dropped the asking price to $1.32 million in May.
So your front porch isn't living up to its full potential? There's an easy, inexpensive fix for that.
What is your front porch saying about you? If you’re like a lot of people, it’s probably not saying a whole lot. All too many homeowners slap down a welcome mat and call it a day, neglecting to give the space the design consideration they've given to the rest of their home.
But here's the deal: Your front porch is one of the key elements that contributes to the curb appeal of your home and gives people a first impression, whether they're driving by or walking up to ring your bell. Plus, when the weather is just right, it can be a great place to hang. So why not pep it up a bit?
"The closer people come to your home, the more they should get a sense of your taste and lifestyle," says Donna Garlough, style director for Wayfair and Joss & Main. "A great porch will set the tone for what guests will encounter when they get inside—playful or formal, grand or family-friendly.”

With staggering student loans, fewer affordable starter homes and lower earnings than the previous generation, young adults own fewer homes than ever.
With staggering student loans, fewer affordable starter homes and lower earnings than the previous generation, young adults own fewer homes than ever. Considering the reputation millennials have in the media for poor financial skills — avocado toast, anyone? — it’s no surprise the millennial generation is very slowly entering the home buying market. Although millennials are the largest generation of adults, they only account for 7.5% of the value of all U.S. homes.
As cities across the U.S. have found, expanding public transportation can improve home values and attract new residents interested in a car-free lifestyle.
New York City homeowner Tina Larsson watched for nearly a decade as a new subway station was built right across the street from her brick midcentury co-op on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The excavation blasts shook her walls and sent dust spewing into the air; the noise and disruption choked off business to once-busy restaurants and shops.
It was, in short, a terrible mess.
Then in January, the heavy construction machinery suddenly disappeared, the sidewalk scaffolding was taken down, and the endless clutter seemed to vanish overnight. After nearly a century of starts and stops, the $4.5 billion Second Avenue subway—one of the nation's most notoriously delayed large-scale transit projects—was finally open for business. It was sleek, modern, and even festooned with original Chuck Close portraits. Now, Larsson, 51, and many of her longtime neighbors, are finally ready to reap the real estate rewards.

Walk in his shoes, live in his house: Fashion designer Vince Camuto’s opulent Greenwich, CT, estate is on the market for a whopping $25 million.
The saying goes, you should try walking a mile in another man’s shoes. Now you can also live in his house. Shoe designer Vince Camuto’s opulent Greenwich, CT, estate is on the market for a whopping $25 million. David Ogilvy is the listing agent.
Camuto was known for his eponymous line of shoes and had co-founded footwear company Nine West. He purchased this crumbling dwelling in the 1980s, when he decided to move to the country from New York. The fashion mogul, who died in 2015 at the age of 78, viewed the falling-down mansion as a “diamond in the rough.”
Indeed, decades later, the mansion is now a gleaming gem. Known as Ream Chateau, the ornate 16,000-square-foot home has 11 bedrooms, 14 baths, and seven half-baths.
Home selling is a skill that most people don't get much practice on. The result? Sellers make rookie mistakes that squander their chances of moving on.
If your home is struggling to catch the eye of a buyer, it could be for an entirely valid reason. Maybe you're stuck in a sluggish market or have the poshest place on the block (always a tough sell). But there's another possibility, too—your home could be sitting on the market because of a rookie selling mistake. All of us can make 'em, even those of us who actually have a few home sales under our belts.

You can use a Denver Realtor to represent you in the purchase of a new home too. Buyer representation could save you money and more.
Buying a new home in Denver is trickier than you might think. The on-site salespeople can be very friendly and helpful. And, they can sometimes even offer you an incentive not to use a Denver Realtor for a new home. “The cost is the same either way except I can offer you an incentive not to use your Realtor”, is a frequent claim they make. But, remember, the on-site salespeople work for the builder. They do not work for you.

In development, everyone is looking for an advantage. What can be offered that no one else has and/or how can what everyone else has be offered in a way that is new, different and more appealing. On the whole, Denver has what few other cites do – year-round fantastic weather; immediate access to one of North America’s premier outdoor playgrounds; an easygoing vibe; a healthy love of dogs; and, on the grand scale of American cites, at least the remnants of affordability.
