Xilonen (left) and A’roūä (right) 18-20 years old .
A’roūä is being groomed to lead the Mangkwan and convert the Na’vi to their cult of fire - with a degree in engineering she is intimately familiar with advanced technologies. She is actually a very warm person under her fanatical, borderline unhinged, ideals. Driven by a passion for technology and its integration into their people’s lives, this all consuming purpose helps to bury a deep internal conflict of her identity and place on Pandora. Her look is inspired by the Na’vi concept art for the original avatar made from Thanator/Palalukan leather.
Xilonen stepped up into the role of ‘Tsakeram’, armed with the mystical arts of her ancestors combined with her (still in progress) human medical education. She is blunt and ruthless, suppressing her softness, doubts and fracturing loyalties beneath a barely contained persona of duty (wonder who she learned that from?). Thankfully for her immediate vicinity she directs any excess aggression & uncontrollable rage into her enemies - famed for her efficient brutality among both the Na’vi and humans alike.
They have absorbed their mother’s (and clan’s) pain, becoming this twisted need for ‘justice’ for what their people are ‘owed’. En eye for an eye & blood for blood is a foundation for their world views. Eywa in their eyes is a suppressor of potential, a shackle to what the Na’vi could truly become.
Both sisters are straight up pyromaniacs:
. Xilonen views fire like breath & soul, it is a spiritual experience for her. She will breathe with a wildfire and watch matches burn in solitude atop the towers of bridgehead city. It is like a kindred spirit - a physical manifestation of the soul or that intangible spark of life. Passion unleashed.
.A’roūä finds the power of and control over fire to be her draw; the roar of combustion, the power of an ISV, the heat of a thermal explosion. Rory lives for the rush that this fire inspires. She obsesses over the idea of Fire being the first piece of technology (think: Alien Prometheus deleted Prometheus speech - I love that speech), their first steps towards mastery over their world. It is the embodiment of their total dominion over the natural.
These 2 were apart of Bridgehead’s first graduating class of native born Pandoran’s, as the only 2 Na’vi in the class it could get tense at times but thankfully these girls had surprisingly strong bonds with their human peers.
Miles and Varang raised them in a semi co-parenting situation, their duties keeping the family apart in many circumstances as the girls were ferried between human and Na’vi settlements - never having any one place to lay their roots down, instead relying and connecting to people more so than places. And though they try to hide it, the girls desperately want to connect with their older brother Spider. But war and opposing ideals make that outcome a nigh impossibility, despite how much both sides may want otherwise.
Meet A’roūä & Xi’lonen - the Quaritch Twins!
Avatar is all about them doomed sibling relationships so I thought it’d be fitting to make another. *click for full resolution*
More information under the break:
Behold the Quarang fan child that I’ve had lurking in my files for…I shall not say. (Updated with some fresh paint from the trailer)
Her name is A’roūä - Rory for short *click on images for full resolution*
She mainly wears a pair of her dad’s old pants but she also wears a traditional loin cloth, though it’s styled closer to a sarong. Rory is a nickname her father, Quaritch gave her but he also affectionately calls her ‘bug’ in English and ‘Yellowstone’ in Na’vi for her large yellow eyes (and reference to the supervolcano)
I’d describe her as a total spitfire and whirlwind (she’d lose her head if it weren’t screwed on) but she takes after her parents in that, when serious, she’s like a shark circling in the water. A fascinating combination of traits with a unique mix of human and Na’vi mannerisms - frequently code switching depending on if she’s in bridgehead or at home.
The sword is a coming of age gift that has become tradition in the past decade in Mangkwan culture as they’ve leaned more into technological development, refining their own skills into Blacksmithing and other fire related crafts (fellow pyros).
A change I’d make to her design would be to give her ‘ikran horns’ - curved bones woven into braids on her scalp with long feathers trailing out like the kuru of an ikran. She likes to play up the Vrrtep (demon) label that other Na’vi tribes call her due to her heritage (parents & clan!) as her own way of controlling her image.

From @OfficialAvatar
“Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Be among the first to watch the trailer, exclusively in theaters this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
I knew she’d be the poster girl!
my friends I have a theory that the ash people in Avatar 3 are actually blue like the rest of the Na'vi but rub ash on their skin as either a camouflage or ritual which makes them look grey/white.
This actually works with the rumour that they take in outcasts as well.
The idea that they are assimilated into the clan by literally painting themselves to look like each other. A common identity for the whole clan to share no matter what sub-species or past you hail from - they are all ash Na’vi to each other - United under one cultural identity.
Spider demonstrates a similar practice by painting himself blue so there may be something going on with that desire for acceptance but it has a hint to themes of ‘is what you want what you really need’.
I need more theories about Avatar 3 because I'm going to go crazy until the premiere 😭 I'm so curious how Spider will react if Quaritch really joins Ash's na'vi or worse kidnaps him again and forces him to join too
Let me just get my hat on *rustles of foil*
-
To put it simply I think if Spider was to find out Quaritch had joined the Ash clans, he’d be a mess of conflicting emotions: both pride at the fact his ‘not-dad’ is capable of connecting with Pandora and the Na’vi like that but also, from the nature of the ash people, be disappointed in who he has decided to connect with.
But for comedic effect here’s the initial reaction:
‘Quaritch joined the Na’vi’
Spider: YES!
‘It’s the Ash people’
Spider: FUCK!
-
Quaritch would, in my mind, definitely try to make his ‘totallynotmyson-son’ live with him, because being accepted by a group of Na’vi is what Spider wants right? But of course spider is a gentle person whose closest friend maybe the embodiment of Eywa herself, he wouldn’t want to be apart of a culture that values cruelty like severing and wearing kurus as trophies, or potentially having any affiliation with the RDA/human side of the war - who the ash people may be allying with.
I feel like the Metkayina will be where spider finds himself as a man and their pacifistic way of life being antithetical to his biological father would only attract him further.
The ash people will likely be the Opposite to everything the reef people & tulkun represent, much like their opposing elements - and while spider is a warrior at heart with an ever burning fire that may endear him to the ash people, I just can’t think he would be on board, though he would again feel conflicted if they were completely ready to accept him despite of all his differences. Everything he wants if he leaves behind who he is.
If Quaritch forced Spider to join the ash clans (which I don’t think it’d get quite that far but not for lack of trying on Mile’s part), Spider would resent his father for making him join the clan that’s trying to kill his ‘people’ (kiri, Lo’ak & etc…). It would, from in spider’s point of view, be little different from being forced to join the RDA directly.
-
Extra theory:
Themes of this film will likely be about war, forgiveness & rebirth.
War - obvious reasons but specifically about the cycle of violence of being wronged so you must take revenge which then creates the feedback loop of conflict that never ends. The ash people were likely on the losing side of a conflict/ many conflicts a long time ago and they still hold one hell of a grudge - which is why they’ll join the humans to defeat their ‘shared’ enemies.
Forgiveness - this is Neytiri’s theme, she needs to learn to let the past go in order to achieve inner peace and move on in her life without holding onto all that pain and anger. Especially towards Spider, where she’ll see that the ash people are the result of this blind hatred for the actions of one’s ancestors being put upon an innocent party. How petty & pointless it really is, especially how it can poison a person’s soul overtime. She doesn’t need to forget but to recognise that Spider and many humans are not all guilty of the crimes of a few terrible people. Maybe this will even aid in her journey to understanding humanities plight on Earth?
Rebirth - I’ve said before with project phoenix and the cultural symbolism of fire, there are huge indicators for rebirth to be a major theme and I think that will be Quaritch’s theme going forward as he sheds the identity of the human Quaritch and becomes the Na’vi man he lives as now, whether that is with the ash people or not is another matter but I think they will be crucial in finding his connection with Pandora, with Varang as a key point in this journey.
I also think from the leaks of spider that rebirth will be apart of his character arc, overcoming the limitations of his human body to truly be apart of Pandora. And kiri who could be reborn as the Avatar of Eywa herself.
I don't think Metkayina are pacifist. Tulkun are but we see that Reef people were ready to fight for them instead and even Ronal (tshaik and heavily pregnant) takes part in the battle.
When Spider joins them I expect him to become one of the warriors. After all he did in the battle with SeaDragon (crashing the ship, killing humans) I'm sure he qualifies. But I do wonder if the way he reacted to seeing human corpses in the wreck would make a bit hesitant about killing more people. He seemed a bit shaken by the consequences of his actions.
I certainly hope he and Neytiri can come to an understanding. Neytiri seeing Spider instead of just his ancestry is my big hope. But Quaritch will not make it easy. On the other hand, I wonder if Quaritch willing to go against his mission for Spider could become something that saves lives and saving him could ultimately be a good thing.
I hope that if Quartich learnt one thing in his relationship with Spider is that he shouldn't force Spider to stay with him. That this relationship has to be voluntary.
I think Ash people might be like Vikings in a way. That their territories are so poor in resources that they sustain themselves by raiding other clans. And then Quaritch and RDA come and offer them weapons that can give them a leg up in the fight.
I totally get it and I’m loving the contribution to the discussion - Quaritch basically needs to let go of his possessiveness over spider & his desire to control him if they are to have any kind of positive growth to their relationship.
I say the reef people are pacifists as before the conflict with the sea dragon they are content to not seek out conflict (basically saying to Jake, this isn’t our war) and outright seem to avoid conflicts with other Na’vi in the spirit of their tulkun brethren (tulkun must not kill tulkun, Na’vi must not kill Na’vi). Not that they wouldn’t go to war but it’s just not their way to seek out battles like that if it can be avoided altogether. Maybe pacifism isn’t the right word but basically they won’t throw the first stone, the sea dragon killed their tulkun and attacked their children so the first stone was thrown.
Spider is such a sweet kid, he obviously feels connected with the humans that are killed despite being their enemy, Lo’ak on the other hand seems to have a potential dark streak in his disregard for human life - shooting the human on the ship and barely flinching, and the deleted scene where he plays with a human skeleton from the hallelujah mountains battle - an act that disturbs spider. Spider seems to understand he has to fight for his side but he isn’t blind to the consequences and will probably be left out of post-battle celebrations because of it.
After seeing the concept art image of Varang and the ash Na’vi dancing around the fire, it definitely gave me hellblade vibes - especially the hellblade 2 trailer with Senua chanting ‘In Maidjan’. Though they’ll probably be influenced by cultures such as south-east Asian (fire worship) , aboriginal (desolate & remote hostile environments) & South American (human sacrifice & technological advancement).
I do hope they’re not one dimensional and that, while they’re definitely antagonists/villains in the story, they present a valid opposing view to most Na’vi - albeit taken to its extreme (as I’m of the opinion extremism of any ideology is a bad thing).
Also I’ve seen people theorising that the concept art depicts a mind-control/possession ritual?
But I think it’s supposed to be a victory/ returning war party celebration - the kurus around Varang’s neck are the spoils of war and trophies of her victories with the corpse in the back being either a dead ash Na’vi warrior being sent to Pandora ‘Valhalla’ or a captured warrior burnt alive as a sacrifice to whatever deity they worship - either a twisted interpretation of Eywa or something entirely different.
This would play into a nature of marauding and pillaging for resources as volcanic soil has the potential to be bountiful but can also be desolate if conditions aren’t right. They are shunned by other Na’vi and forced to live where no one else will - like a penal colony - and as such take what they must to survive.
Which is also why I think they break the laws of Eywa - without trees they likely live in stone dwellings. - without nearby resources they likely have wheeled carts to help move things great distances. - and without renewable resources they must harvest what they can within reach, the metals and stones of the ground.
- I will say something I’m begging for is to see Miles connecting more to his Na’vi nature through the ash people as they seem to be a far better fit for his personality and world view than the other clans we have seen like the omaticaya and Metkayina. Because whilst the ash people may be resource hungry and potentially environmentally damaging they’re still Na’vi.
Tangent : another theory I have is that the ash people were once an advanced civilisation like that of the aztecs but due to hubris, environmental calamity or pissing off too many Na’vi their society crumbled, leaving the ash people of today to literally live in the ashes of their former greatness - with what we see today a mere shadow of their potential, which is what the RDA will exploit to get them to fight for the humans.
I need more theories about Avatar 3 because I'm going to go crazy until the premiere 😭 I'm so curious how Spider will react if Quaritch really joins Ash's na'vi or worse kidnaps him again and forces him to join too

oh my god miss girl is wearing a necklace of severed kurus-
Something I didn’t notice until now - there’s scar like dotted patterns across her abdomen and arms.
Ritual Scarification? As seen in some tribes in Africa & Australia - for marvel fans Killmonger comes to mind.

OKAY!!??
Official title : Avatar 3 - Fire & Ash
D23 Ash Concept art
I was hoping they’d go into that dark, ritualistic (getting major hellblade Senua’s Saga vibes) vibe but Goddamn this is went hard and is genuinely terrifying imagery - I LOVE IT!!
Severed Kurus worn as trophies, sharp claws (extensions?) and even a long serpentine tail with a lack of tail tuft. Fairly close to the forest Na’vi but ghostly pale and lacking stripes/ markings of any kind.
They also appear like most besides Varang herself are starved and emaciated (man in the back may just straight up be a sacrifice/mummified corpse) , desperation may be their main motivation - not sure if they’ll do full blown cannibalism. They’ll probably tone it down for the official film but I really hope it’s not too much.
In another concept we see that the ash Na’vi ride a new species of ikran - a gnarly looking creature with many horns and pale colouration. And there are A LOT!
This implies the ash people number in the hundreds if not thousands - a force well prepared to go against any of Jake’s Na’vi forces.
This version of Varang seems closer to what we’ll probably be seeing in the final film - wearing her riding pants and minimal wardrobe that we saw in the motion capture render footage last year.
And if my eyes don’t deceive me - flying right behind her is a Na’vi man carrying a firearm - who I’m betting is Quaritch. Will he be cosying up to the ash Na’vi temporarily for short term gains or will this be for a more long term goal?
Varang’s signature face paint seems to be a forehead triangle - we saw that exact style on ‘Quaritch’ in this leaked image, so he may be wearing her mark during a big battle.
I’m so F*CKING EXCITED!
Avatar 3 Theory: Varang is Pandora’s Cleopatra
Potential Quaritch x Varang relationship dynamic
——
So I’m a soft-core Quarang shipper, I think it’d be cool to see but we have so little information at this time, that it could go wherever with them. It might happen - it might not but let’s entertain what their dynamic could be in a potential romance.
For Funsies :D
Things I’d love to see in Avatar 3
1. Varang is a cleopatra like figure; I don’t mean a captivating beauty but a deadly strategist, intelligent negotiator, innovative thinker (cleopatra was a chemist among other many things) & formidable threat beyond the femme fatal archetype.
2. Quaritch & Lyle’s growing understanding of the Na’vi language shown with broken sentences in the subtitles, only showing what they can understand - enough but not quite.
3. Jake & Neytiri (plus the kids) still grieving for their eldest and adjusting to life with that missing piece
4. Lo’ak finding his stride as a Metkayina and making efforts to prove his worthiness of Tsireya to her parents
5. Spider carving out a place for himself among the Na’vi despite Neytiri’s hostility
6. Tuk beginning to grow from a child and into the warrior she’ll one day become - giving Jake 2 or 3 heart attacks daily
7. The Wind trader tribe being chill nomadic traders who just roll with the insane nonsense that happens around the main characters: Archenemy resurrected? - bummer, Teenage girl controls the environment like a Demi-god? - very cool, Sky person boy just walking around acting genuinely Na’vi? - I like your stripes brother!
8. The Ash people being more than just aggressive warriors but who are rather a calculating and intelligent culture - one that, compared to other Na’vi clans, is uniquely multi-cultured from the many generations of outcasts from other tribes who brought their own skills, knowledge and aspects of their culture into the collective. - complete with Na’vi subspecies we have yet to see (Tundra/snow Na’vi? Taiga?) , hybridised offspring and descendants of them just intergrated into the cultural identity of the ash people.
HC - Varang is like 1/4 wind-trader/dessert na’vi and has a tundra Na’vi somewhere in her ancestral family tree.
9. Showcasing that a good portion of new humans arriving to Pandora come as refugees who genuinely mean no harm to Pandora and RDA staff who are opposed to the measures being taken by the leadership against the natives.
10. Exploration of Na’vi history and why the ash people appear to be outcasts themselves among other Na’vi. -my theory is that they were once an advanced civilisation like the Aztecs but were destroyed like them by all the Na’vi they ticked off under the first Toruk Makto (who supposedly rallied the clans to defeat a volcano- oral history passed by hundreds of generations and metaphor diluting the real history - instead defeating the tribe of the volcano?)-
I love the hair you did for Spider in the latest art. Can you draw them backwards too? I'm curious about the whole hairstyle idea :)
So it was a loose idea but this is kind of what I had visualised in my head for it.
- colour coded so the hair is blue & accessories are red (I know it’s just a rough sketch).
Also we see that baby spider had such beautiful curls that I wanted him to really give his hair some love with this style.
Can you draw what Ash Spider would look like in your interpretation? The idea of Spider joining in stuck in my head and your Ash Navis art is amazing!
So sorry this took so long but I finally had time to make a quick sketch for Ash!Spider - sort of a combination of my own ash Na’vi designs and on the canon-inspired stuff I’ve done more recently - anyway I hope you like :)

Chimaera Please dont mind my sketchy work
More Ezra art because he is the best character in star wars and I cannot be convinced other wise. anyways this one is for my Pathfinder AU! My main AU and the one I draw the most for! <33
Mean Ezra >>> Nice Ezra, im sorry but hes better when he’s in a bad mood
How’d you get into my hopes and dreams?!
This obscure image has been burned into my brain for quite some time now. What could it mean for Avatar 3?
Oh my god I love their smug little faces - so funny and the art is just so good, I adore your style.
Foil hat time baby!
This is the scenario/play-by-play in my head:
Norm is captured in his avatar - after a big battle - kept awake with stimulants preventing him from falling asleep/unconscious thus preventing a safe transfer back to his human body. Not given a breather mask either to prevent him from being able to run very far or think totally clearly. An attempt at trying to loosen his tongue presumably. Worth noting that Na’vi bodies can breathe human atmosphere for hours, so whilst unpleasant he won’t fall unconscious or die anytime soon.
Quaritch and Wainfleet - both in ash Na’vi attire - are interrogating him, questioning where Sully and the Na’vi forces are located. Norm doesn’t say.
-There’s definitely a bit where Quaritch or Wainfleet taunt Norm with the Breather masks, taking nice slow sips from them, like drinking water in front of a starved man trapped in a desert.
At his refusal, Varang enters the scene with Quaritch and Wainfleet firmly restraining Norm.
She then performs the type of mental dominance Tsaheylu (from the script leaks that showed her manipulating Quaritch’s movement until he broke free) on Norm and simply plucks the information from his head - as he is not able to fend off her mental probing due to not breathing the right air.
To me, her being there is why Quaritch especially is decked out in the ash clan style despite being at a human base (probably bridgehead). An alliance being formed between the ash clans & recombinants/human side of the war.
An alternative: Quaritch does the mental interrogation himself, having learned the technique from his meeting with Varang.
