There were legends in the Borderlands; stories of a mysterious, silent, armed player that showed up at every single game. Having been speculated to be the very first player in the Borderlands, the amount of days on his Visa were unknown, because he rarely ever used them. No one knew for certain how many cards he had in his possession, but if a single player were able to collect them all, it would be him.
Max Winters, an American Economics professor that teaches game theory, was taking a trip with his class and coworker to Shibuya when the comet hit. Trapped in the Borderlands with his fellow teacher, as well as his own daughter, Katelyn, Max survived as many games as possible, while also forcing Katelyn to use as many visa days as she could. Max has an innate ability to guess games and their setups, simply by analyzing the arena, making it easy for him to know which games he could survive, and how to win.
It wasn't until a nine of hearts game, one he was certain of which would result in a sole survivor, where he was forced to face the reality that he and his daughter could not survive together forever. Sacrificing herself to save his life, Katelyn willing perished to help Max win the game. She asked her father to live, to tell her friends what happened, and that alone is his reason for surviving in these games.
Until he is kidnapped by a group of militants and brought to the Beach, where he meets Hinata; a boy whose personality reminds him so much of his daughter. Protecting Hinata, and getting him home, that is what drives Max now. That, and his need to protect any young person forced into the Borderlands.

The Beach members started running past him, but he froze. He really should start moving, running from the insane militants who started shooting the beach members but he couldnโt. Then he felt a hand grab his wrist and pull him back, forcing him to run from the scene. After they got far enough, he turned to see who had saved him. Usagi. She was one of the few people to figure out his fear early on.
โThank youโ he chokes out, and she nodded. She then asked if he knew where Arisu was, or if he would help them look.
He didnโt, but suggested maybe looking on the fourth floor. It was away from everyone and there were a lot of empty rooms. Usagi thanked him and left. Now, Hinata had to find Aguni again, maybe he could get some answers. Or find Senshi..
No. Maybe he shouldnโt. Although he was confident Senshi wouldnโt shoot him, he wasnโt sure they would be alone. They could be with other Militant..
Would Aguni be with the militants? Fuck. He could still be in the main lobby. And Hinata didnโt want to risk going there.
Hinata really shouldnโt have been lost in thought. As he ran through the halls, he didnโt even notice the Militant standing infront of him. He ran into him, and stumbled back. Fuck. Oh fuck oh fuck oh fu-
The militant tried shooting him first. But it seemed he had wasted too many bullets, and Hinata could see a couple of bodies lying behind the Militant. Members he knew, not close enough or well knownโ but knew enouth that he felt sadness for them. Guilt. Taking this opportunity, the militant branded a knife and swiped for him.
Thankfully, the militant was worse with a knife than he was with a gun.
The bad part? He managed to hit his eye, slicing it deep across his left eye. Searing hot pain shot through his head as he stumbled again and fell backwards. Hinata could feel blood dripping down the side of his face, as a hand went up to cover it. Ow. Fuck. He was going to die here. Maybe then, he could be reunited with Take-

Before he could get another word in, the American foreigner grabbed his gunโ one that he always carried even though he wasnโt allowed.. and let loose on the militant. Hinata just shut his eyesโ his eye as he heard the gunshots fire right behind him.
Then they stopped. A body fell to the floor but Hinata kept his eyes shut. He could hear a shuffle walk towards him, and stand infront of them.
Screams and gunfire could still be heard in the distance, but all of it quieted down as soon as he felt a hand rest gently on his shoulder. โHinataโ Max whispered gently, and Hinata opened his eyes. He hadnโt even realized he had started crying before he sniffles and tackled the older male into a hug.
โYouโre okay. Iโve got you nowโ he whispered. Hinata was thankful that he had spent all those years studying English, had spent a few months in America.. because knowing the comforting words from the American man calmed him down. โYouโll be safe with me. Okay?โ
โI need to find Aguniโ he whispered out, taking a moment to find the right words. He felt Maxโs grip tightened. He knew what that meant. Max didnโt approve of his love for his friends. But Max just pulled away, standing up and holding out his hand. โLetโs go. I doubt your.. friend will be willing to talk. But I can protect you along the wayโ he said
Hinata stared up at him. The American man who had came to Japan for a school field trip, and was unlucky enough to have the same fate as the rest of them. The Man who became a legend amongst the people and lost his daughter figure to a game.
The man who had found the beach, and at first stayed close to Hinata because he was one of the few people who could understand him.. The man who in the endโ became one of the most important figures in Hinataโs life. A father figure.
He knew what Max was telling him.
