So I’ve been using the first season of pokemon as background noise while i work. The biggest mystery still is the Gary Having Ten Badges legend, one that I’ve been chipping away with in my rewatching.

For the uninformed heres the deal: Gary Oak is a massive one-upping assclown who is always ten steps ahead of Ash. When Ash goes to get his 8th badge, Gary shows that he already has ten and showcases the image above. Besides the obvious fallacies, the mystery goes even further than my five year old mind initially realized.

1) Gary does not have at least one of the 8 Kanto badges canonically. In this same episode, Gary loses to Giovanni and fails to get the Earth Badge. Earlier on, he claims he’s skipping Cinnabar Gym, but one of those looks like a volcano badge so i guess he went back?? So he got ten badges but failed to get all 8 main ones.

2) Only four out of ten of those badges are legit Kanto badges. He has the boulder badge, the cascade badge, the rainbow badge, and what MAY be the volcano badge. This would mean Gary failed to beat Lt. Surge, Sabrina, Koga, and Giovanni, or that he skipped those cities completely.  

3) Those badges don’t exist anywhere else. The orange islands badges don’t look like that. One looks like a yellow version of Skyla’s but that’s about it.
