REALLY GREAT PODCASTS
So, as most of you know, I write and produce and act in and have my life swallowed by @thebrightsessions. But when I’m not making my own audio drama, I love listening to others. I thought people might be curious about what I listen to so here’s what’s in my feed right now that I’m loving (in alphabetical order):
Archive 81 / @archive81
A “found footage” podcast - only two episodes so far but quite creepy and very intriguing. Plus, the sound production is truly stellar and there seem to be a few interesting mysteries at play.
ars Paradoxica / @arsparadoxica
Do you like female genius scientists? Alternative American history? Time travel? Really good in-universe continuity? Codes? Names like “Chet Whickman”? This podcast may be for you.
Full disclosure: I’m a little biased because Mischa Stanton, the director and producer of ars, is now producing TBS and they are a super cool person (as is Daniel Manning, the writer, who I had the pleasure of meeting yesterday). BUT both Mischa and I were fans of each other’s podcasts before even speaking, so my love for ars is totally genuine.
The Black Tapes Podcast / @theblacktapespodcast
If you guys are audio drama people, you’ve probably heard this one already. It’s just the right amount of creepy for me and, while I wish they were a little more frequent with their updates, I think they’ve earned the attention they’ve received. It is very well produced and pulls off the “Serial” format really well.
Jim Robbie and the Wanderers / @officialjimrobbieandthewanderers
I’m only on Episode 3 for this one, but I am loving the world-building. It’s post-apocalyptic shenanigans, but in a very new, fun way. Also, the leads are two female musicians and their pet robot so, really, what’s not to love?
Limetown
An even more successful “Serial” rip-off (imo), but with even less frequent updates. In fact, it’s looking less and less likely like we will see a second season any time soon (they are writing a prequel novel and working on a TV show adaptation). But the acting in “Limetown” is phenomenal and it has some of the most chilling moments I’ve ever heard in audio drama.
Return Home
Just finished binging this one - it’s a tad creepy with a big side of goofy fun. Guy gets a mysterious message to “return home”, goes home, things are creepy, Scooby-Doo hijinks ensue. Very interested to see where this one goes.
Wolf 359 / @wolf359radio
You guys may have heard of this one before- jk, I know you all listen. Come for the funny space-capades, stay for the soul-crushing twists. Very lovable characters, amazing score by @cowpocalypse (seriously, one of the best audio drama scores I’ve ever heard, if not the best).
Wooden Overcoats / @woodenovercoats
I’m nearly completely caught up with this one and I’m totally in love. It’s comedy, which is a very nice change of pace for me and it warms the enormous part of my heart that is dedicated to P.G. Wodehouse - similar British humor and small village antics. Plus, it’s narrated by a mouse.
On my list to listen to: SAYER, EOS 10, Wormwood, We’re Alive, King Falls AM, Our Fair City, probably a few more that are slipping my mind. If anyone has suggestions, send them my way!
(would people be interested in a list like this for non-fiction podcasts? because I have a bunch of those too)
Thanks Lauren! We love The Bright Sessions. Overcoats fans, check them out!
