Don't mind me, I just have a small proposition for the non-binary community! I think a huge issue with singular they/them is that we do not fix the grammar around it. I think it would really help if for singular they/them, we don't say, "how are they" but "how is they." Let me just explain the difference here because I don't want to explain this in comments: "Are" is used when speaking in second person or referring to multiple objects. We use "are" in "are you okay" or "who are you" because we do use "are" for second person pronouns (you.) Much like we don't use "are" or "is" for first person pronouns (I). Example: I am okay. When we are not referring to second person pronouns (you), "are" implies plural. Examples: "The sticks are free" and "why are they all running?" In both sentences "are" implies the object is plural. When an object is not plural we say "is". Examples: "A stick is free" and "why is she running?" Are, am, is & be all have the same meaning, which is "exist as". We just use a different word depending on the pronoun/object
Why do we use "are" on singular they? Just because we're used to it. But it is grammatically correct to say "they is free" "who is they" or "why is they running?" Technically, using the plural "are" is grammatically incorrect, but it sounds correct because we use it on plural they. Thanks for listening to my ted talk :D
