I looked away.

and in that one simple sentence, you learn everything you need to know about iroh’s character:  iroh’s great flaw is that he can’t bear to acknowledge painful truths.  

with these words, iroh reveals how ashamed he is for his role as a passive bystander in zuko’s abuse.  he did nothing—and that shame holds his tongue and causes him to avoid confrontations throughout the show.  

shame is the reason iroh waits almost three years to tell his crew about the circumstances of zuko’s banishment.  he puts off telling the truth, allowing zuko’s crew to believe the convenient assumption that zuko was injured in a training accident gone wrong, unable to tell the true reasons for zuko’s exile until it is almost too late to prevent a mutiny.  

shame is the reason iroh talks around hard truths by speaking in riddles and proverbs to zuko, because he can’t bear to speak of such painful things directly.  

and shame is what keeps iroh complacent on the warship and through his travels through the earth kingdom, unwilling to confront or challenge zuko’s fervent belief in his father’s love until it is too late, and zuko has betrayed him. 

when iroh tells zuko, “you must let go of your own shame,” he’s not just speaking about zuko’s inner turmoil—he’s speaking about himself, because putting shame behind you in order to heal and grow is the great inner journey that iroh undergoes thoroughout the show.

iroh is not a static character or a proverb-dispensing sage who is introduced to the audience with his great wisdom already won—no!!  he goes from a failed general, frozen from grief and shame, to the white lotus grandmaster who leads a force to liberate ba sing se.

in the centre, sleeping upside down with limbs spread out is Sokka. mouth open tooth growing out. arms above his head. he is just wearing pale brown-grey pants held together by a dark blue ribbon. he must have gotten out of his blanked during his sleep. his legs are spread atop his father's torso. one foot getting into Hakoda's half-asleep face, pinky toe stuck in his father's nose pulling. Hakoda is not amused. but resigned himself to his fate till his family decides to wake up. he wears his hair open, a bone necklace around his neck. and dark brown pants. over his legs is draped a fur banked.on the right side of the image is a small text saying "please don't repost" below in the centre is the artist's signature "chiptrillino . 2022" 

the second image shows the family doing her morning routine.

Sokka is still half-asleep in front of her yawing. bundled up in an embroidered blanked with otter-penguin and bears on it. on the right of the image is Hakoda yawing just like his son briding his daughter's hair, he is not wearing a shirt, just his pants in which he slept int. on top of his crossed legs sits katara. wearing a light blue kuspuk with a small blue raindrop pattern on. happily dangling her feet and playing with her doll.
