Reflections

Resilience is not the absence of pain, nor is it the refusal to be wounded. It is refusing to let pain wrest control of our destiny from our hands. It is the ability to fall without making a home of the ground, and to be shaken by hardship without allowing it to dictate the shape of our souls.

Strength does not mean that the soul is free from weakness; rather, it means possessing the ability to rise and remain steadfast even while facing it. Here, the words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provide a profound measure of true human strength:

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Strive for what benefits you, seek the help of Allah, and do not give in to helplessness. If something befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done such and such, it would have been such and such.’ Rather, say, ‘Allah has decreed, and whatever He wills, He does,’ for the words ‘if only’ open the door to the work of Satan.”

Narrated by Muslim (2664).

The strength to which the Prophet ﷺ calls us is not a hardness that makes the heart cold, nor a stubbornness that blinds the inner eye. It is a resolve that embraces every possible means, seeks strength and assistance from Allah, and refuses to allow helplessness to become its dwelling place.

The meaning of resilience is further illuminated by the words of Allah Almighty:

“O you who believe! Be patient, persevere in patience, remain steadfast, and be mindful of Allah, so that you may prosper.”

— Qur’an 3:200

﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اصْبِرُوا وَصَابِرُوا وَرَابِطُوا وَاتَّقُوا اللهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ۝ ﴾

[آل عمران : 200 ].

To endure is to remain patient beneath the weight of what burdens you, to persevere against whatever seeks to break you, and to stand guard at the frontiers of your soul—refusing to surrender to any storm or hand your heart over to despair.

Perhaps there is a storm that was never meant to uproot you, but to reveal how deeply rooted you truly are. Some trials do not extinguish the light; they reveal that it had been within you all along.

So stand firm—not because the roads will become easier for you, but because you have become too deeply rooted to allow their harshness to determine your destiny.
