Job duties include eating meals with the family (!!!) and speaking English/playing with three kids in the morning and after school. Yeah, US school lunches suck, but I do think this might be a little inaccurate…the school lunches I had in South Korea had nowhere near that much fresh produce. And in Italy lunch was mostly giant plates of pasta with maybe one piece of fruit.

It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.

So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.

What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.

In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.

I’m also selling original watercolors for $10 each (first photo). All of my examples here are sea creatures because they’re my favorite, but I can do lots of other things as well (for example, I did a TARDIS for coolestfword last year). Below is the TARDIS she painted for me last year! It’s so beautiful and I llooovveee iittttt. I also have a portrait that she did of me for my birthday maybe? But it’s lovely and hanging up in my room. If you want colorful and whimsical art in your life I highly recommend checking her out! AND someday she will probably be like a famous book illustrator or something so buying her art is really like an investment. I plan to retire on it.

i was trying to make my friend a bday cake but the dye on the decorative icing started leaking and dripping everywhere so it accidentally became the most ominous and violent looking baked good ive ever seen…… i slapped on some sprinkles to try and make it less threatening looking. it worked a little bit.
