The Apothocary Diaries... I have never seen a show where every character is genuinely in violently different pieces of media. Like usually people post this and I'm not convinced, but in this show it's literally true. Gyokuyo, Lihua and most of the ladies in waiting are in a court drama in their respective positions. Xiaolan is in a slice of life as the pure and adorable protagonist. Guen (the physician) is also in a slice of life as the clumsy grandfatherly figure that serves the main character and their friends tea and snacks at his workplace where they hang out. Lihaku is (in the most literal sense) canonically a shonen protagonist. (Open your heart, you know it to be true. He's working hard and training to obtain an "unobtainable" goal.) Lakan and Shishou are in tragic romantic dramas (with two different endings) as the male love interests.
Shenmei is in a Disney movie as the evil stepmother. Loulan is in a soap opera where the melodrama is turned up to 9000 as the tragic heroine. Basen is in whatever torture complex work from actual real life is, as an employee at their wits end. The Madam is in a Business Strategy & Networking 101 seminar as the fucking instructor.
And of course: Jinshi is in a weird romcom version of Undercover Boss as the undercover boss. Maomao is simultaneously in the Hunger Games as a tribute, Sherlock Holmes as Sherlock, and a workplace sexual harassment training module as the teachable moment. And Gaoshun? Well. Gaoshun's in the Apothecary Diaries.
I think a great way to improve communication with kids (and adults) is to make every yes or no question a this or that question.
I started doing it when after brain surgery my husband had trouble forming responses to questions for a while, and realized that the habit was helping my students engage more truthfully with me.
Some examples:
Yes/No: “Did you clean up your room like I told you?”
This/That: “Did you clean up already, or do you still need to do that?”
Yes/No: “Are you going to sit quietly?”
This/That: “Are you ready to sit and do our quiet activity, or do you need some time by yourself first?”
Yes/No: “Are you doing anything fun for your birthday?”
This/That: “Are you having a party on your birthday, or are you going to relax?”
I think many children (and adults!) are averse to telling adults “No,” especially when a command is implied. (“Did you clean your room?” “Are you going to sit quietly?” Hmmm if I say ‘no’ I will be in trouble with the adult.) So they are actually pretty likely to just lie and say what they think you want to hear.
Presenting a this or that question provides an alternative to lying, a ‘no, but’ scenario where they are presented with the reasonable consequences of a No (“if you’re not ready to sit quietly, you cannot do our quiet activity with us yet.”)

when u look at 2017 and think “oh that’s only like 3 years ago” and it’s actually 12,000 years ago and everything is gone and everyone you know has been reduced to ash and the world is completely different
Something about the person who sees you the way you wished to be seen

While I was watching the episode where Makoto asks Saiki to help him buy gifts for Teruhashi, I noticed something I had missed before. Saiki not only chose a gift for Teruhashi, he actually bought the mug for her. Which he later exchanged with Makoto’s huge blue one because they were the same price and he had to keep the other one. What’s even more funny is that Teruhashi didn’t even ask for a gift from him or anything, as usual, Saiki literally went out of his way for her and got her a gift. Another thing I found interesting is that when Makoto asked him if he knew what Teruhashi’s favorite animal was and he wasn’t aware of it other than knowing she had a cat, Makoto said he didn’t expect him to know anyways, Saiki said it ticked him off. So, he did take that personally. Even more interesting is that he knows all about Teruhashi’s favorite show, song and even her favorite joke (the mixer episode is everything I say) like how much do you have to be close to someone to know almost everything about them?? And the fact that Saiki was offended by Makoto’s remark about him not knowing what Teruhashi’s favorite animal was???? (Tsundere duh)

genuinely kinda crazy to me to minimize the weight of saiki catching teruhashi when she faints because she hasn't slept for the sake of being the perfect pretty girl. like that's not even hater shit that's just lying to yourself because you know damn well that him teleporting into that crowd to catch her is a huge show of his character development and how much he cares about her. his problem with teruhashi was always the amount of attention she draws because her being an attention magnet was in direct conflict with his primary goal of trying to make himself perfectly average so he wouldn't stand out at all, so for him to care enough about her that he would not only put himself in the spotlight to catch her but that he would worsen the attention he drew doing that by glaring at and reprimanding everyone for not caring about her speaks VOLUMES. and you know it's not a coincidence that she also does something in direct conflict with her primary goal in life (being the perfect pretty girl 24/7) by telling the boys that she forgot what they were talking about so she can go thank him for it... these are clearly actions that are directly meant to be compared because they both sacrificed something they have historically viewed as integral to their comfort and happiness for each other. even if you don't think it's romantic (which... it clearly is meant to be; so sorry if you dislike that), it's still a blatant display of how much their relationship has developed and the care they have for each other.
