There’s a little app called Be My Eyes. It’s been on iPhone for a while now and on October 5th, it’ll be out for Android too.

What is Be My Eyes, you might wonder? Well, it’s a community of people helping people. Namely, sighted people helping blind people with simple tasks that require sight to be simple.

In short, if you’re blind and have every had trouble finding your blue shirt, the app was made for you.

If your sighted and want to help, the app is for you too.

We’re going full force ya’ll!  We’re updating the website almost daily, adding more shops in more categories- trying to find and gather together all the amazing products that can help make chronic lives better, prettier, more fun.  From the practical- like ostomy covers and pill cases, to the fun- posters and mugs and tees.

Our hope is to be your one-stop shop.  When you need new gear, or a toy to stim with, a weighted blanket, art that reflects your struggles- we hope you’ll start with us.  And if you’re looking for something you just can’t find- let us know!  This week in Miscellaneous- we added a few shops that make covers and bags for Oxygen tanks and accessories.  We’re about to start hunting for non-compression socks that are loose and comfy for folks with sensitive feet from CRPS and other conditions.

We’re hoping to also publish a Reviews section soon too! If you’re using personalized or prettified products, or any kind of related equipment or gear really- and you’ve reviewed it either in video or blog post etc- let us know! We’ll share it on our reviews page and link back to your site, channel or blog.

Eventually we still plan to do our own video reviews… but for now- we’ve got our hands full keeping resources updated as quickly as we find them.

Today we launched our DIY section. Videos and Written/Photo tutorials are available for all kinds of related topics. Making Fidget, Stim and Sensory items, adapting ready-made clothes for wheelchair users, prettying up wheelchairs, crutches and canes and so much more.

.

Sometimes, it’s cheaper to do it yourself, so we’re collecting all kinds of how-to’s to show you how to do it. But even more than that, as crafters and creators ourselves- we know that sometimes, creation is another form of therapy, or at least- distraction. We still want to encourage you to support the shops and resources we have listed- but if you just need to satisfy your DIY- check out the pages and get to makin’!

Tomorrow the new homepage for August will be up, and we’ll have 3 new featured shops, and a new campaign for you to check out and support too (if you can.) And as always, we’re constantly hunting down and adding new shops and tutorials to add to the site- so if you have links to share- let us know!

Note #1. We would really love especially to add more shops and resources owned and run by POC and non cis, non straight individuals.  Nothing wrong with cis white straight, but that seems to be the majority of the shops we’ve found via googling.

.

We would really love if minority creators would give us a heads up- so we can really represent resources for and from a wider part of our community.    We’d also be interested in adding a little notation to minority run shops.  A small “bob” or “tob” for Black Owned Business or Trans Owned Business as well- but only for those who wish it. 

.

We discussed it a bit yesterday and while we like the idea of minority owned shops being easily visible to those who specifically want to support them, we don’t want to unwittingly out folks who may not be already, or to expose folks who may already deal with harassment to any additional if we can avoid it. SO!  If you are a shop owner who wants to be notated as a Black Owned Business, or Trans Own Business, or Gender Queer, or what have you- please let us know and we’ll add a small sticker to your shop listing!   .

Note #2:Monday we’ll be launching the DIY page!  (yay!)  So if you know of someone who’s done a Video or Tutorial page about sprucing up their gear, like how to decorate a wheelchair, or personalize a  cane, or pill box, or really, anything related to our medical/mobility needs- please send us links! .

We’ve been googling and youtube hunting and we’ve found a few things but… it’s not going as well as we’d like.  We’ll be pecking through pinterest later as well for more links- but if you know of any good DIY videos or posts already- send the links our way so we can add more resources to the page that we may be missing by our own googling..And that’s the news for now!

We’ve been quiet… But busy! I’m still getting the site completely updated, with product photos for each shop (and looking for new ones too), we’re getting ready to design rack cards and write intro letters to send with them to medical facilities all over the country, and in August our DIY page will go live on the site too! . Later this week we’ll be adding a fundraising goal to help us move this further and wider- including rewards for donors who help us along! . We’re still welcoming shop and seller recommendations that we can add to our listed resources, so don’t hesitate to drop us a line! . We’re so glad you’re here, and we hope we’re helping find what you need!
