So college application season is coming around and for any student in college the more scholarships the better, so here’s how I generally searched for scholarships since some of the overused scholarship websites and big general scholarships make it seem like you could never be a real candidate for a scholarship.

Before you go on remember do not be discouraged by large scholarships, apply for literally everything. Lots of them have huge applicant pools and can be daunting, but if you don’t apply at all there is no chance you’ll get that scholarship. 

Specific google searches: No I do not just mean google “scholarships for women”, I mean being incredibly specific. Search your race along with, search your sexual orientation with it, search your religion with it, search any disabilities (physical or mental) with it, search any sports you play with it, etc. 

Example scholarships: scholarships for Pakistani women, scholarships for gay women, scholarships for Muslim women, scholarships for disabled soccer players, scholarships for left handed women

Why?: These sorts of searches will bring searches for specific organizations or businesses whose goal is to empower said group of people. There are tons of scholarships for just women and the applicant pool ends up being huge, when you specify other characteristics you have you focus more in at a smaller applicant pool and scholarship that a lot more people haven’t heard of thus making your chances higher. (Plus it’s a lot easier to write an application essay if you can relate)

Search really obscure things: This might sound stupid, but it literally works. I know a guy who got a scholarship for being a left-handed baseball player. There are scholarships for being really tall or really short. There is a scholarship for doing a freakin duck call. There are literally scholarships for everything and all you need to do is google your obscure habits & characteristics.

If you’re thinking you don’t reach the qualifications for any of these just look through them, I can guarantee you’ll find at least one you can apply for (Anybody with the name Gatling, there’s a specific scholarship for you.)

Scholarship competitions: There are loads of scholarships you can win from competitions. They aren’t specific to one talent/field either. If you’re artistic go for that, if you’re creative go for that, if you can public speak well go for that, if you’re good at math go for that. Just don’t miss an opportunity to do something you’re good at and potentially win a scholarship because you think you aren’t good enough.

IMA Scholarship (if you’re good at accounting and business related cases)

Local scholarships: People don’t realize how many local scholarships they can earn (and you can literally make 20k on them if you apply). The local shops and schools in you’re town require you to be a resident so you’re already at an advantage because the applicant pool is far smaller. You’ll be surprised how many local scholarships you can apply for (my town has a 1 mile wide and we had 42 local scholarships we could apply for). 

Remember you are literally just competing against your peers for a spot, not on a national or international level which is a huge plus.

Your guidance counselor would have all the information for these so ask them about it!

Work related (including your relatives jobs) scholarships: People don’t take advantage of these scholarships at all. Certain companies will give scholarships (i.e. Apple, Starbucks, Google, and a lot more). Furthermore take advantage of scholarships your parents/guardians’ workplaces have to offer and they tend to be larger amounts and given to more people. (I received a scholarship this way and the only requirement was that my parent/grandparent be working there). It’s really unfortunate that lots of people don’t know about these scholarships, but it does make the applicant pool really small, so check if any workplaces you have ties to offers scholarships.

Google your workplace company (or your parent or relatives’) with scholarship. 

[requested by anon] Hello! School can be really hectic at times and it’s easy to get completely swept up into the chaos. This masterpost will (hopefully) help you to stay calm and on top of your work :)

1. GET ORGANISED I cannot stress how important this is. The more organised and on top of things you are, the less stressed out you’ll feel.  Make a bullet journal, put reminders on your phone, make a timetable and just get your shit together in general. Here are some tips and resources to help you do that:

write down everything that you need to do in a planner or something

start doing everything in order of priority (e.g. if a science assignment is due in two days, do it!)

if you have tests, start revising at least a week earlier.

make a planner or a bullet journal 

print some timetables or todo lists’

GET OFF TUMBLR AND DO YOUR WORK 

2. SELF CARE IS IMPORTANT I’m not talking about the cutesy version of self care that you see on tumblr. It’s easy to forget about the simple things like brushing your teeth/hair and even taking a shower. It all adds up to make you even more stressed out. When your at home:

meditate 

do a small work out (even 10 minutes is fine + there’re lots of workouts on this website)

go for a walk / run / jog

take a bath / have a shower

have a nap (this infographic on sleep cycles is pretty interesting)

eat something (post about snacks and their benefits)

3. FRIENDS If you’re feeling stressed because of school, chances are that your friends are going through the same thing. I find it a lot easier to cope with stuff if people around me are also experiencing the same thing. So I guess the main message in this is to stay close to your friends.

4. GENERAL

if you can’t keep up with due dates, talk to a teacher and they will most probably give you an extension. 

take a ‘mental health day’ where you just stay at home and watch tv or just sleep (as ridiculous as it seems, it actually helps a lot)

make sure you’re getting at least 8 hours of sleep!!!!!

if you’re feeling stressed, don’t go on social media….try taking a day off.

if you get a bad grade don’t worry because your grades really don’t define you and it’s happened to everyone.

make sure you listen in class when a teacher is explaining something so that you don’t miss anything important
