the queer thing with cas and the son they're raising together aside, I love that when Dean corrects his dad saying he does have a family, he's including his brother too. John may have chosen spousal revenge over being there for his sons but Dean (and Sam) wouldn't, they put their relationship as brothers over whatever they could have with wives. John only knew his sons within a dysfunctional family paradigm that he created, he never got to see his estranged sons rebuild their relationship as brothers and reconnect as brothers/friends/colleagues etc., he doesn't know that his sons are still primary family to each other because they choose to. i like how the episode showed that Dean can be happy with his present family while still carrying the wishes of a wounded child, there is no moralization, he's allowed to feel gratitude and grief, his dad is allowed to not understand him

thinking about lebanon again and how John and Cas foil each other throughout the story, how John in lebanon is a signifier for a complete family that dean's subconscious manifested, who otherwise doesn't fit into the real life that sam and dean built for themselves brick by brick, meanwhile Cas is a categorical outlier in so many ways it's an odd constellation but the brothers make space for him they choose him as family. I like how cas only shows up after john leaves, there's so much entitlement & power tied to the patriarch but in spn John leaves and Cas enters
