27 Dresses is often criticized for its anti-feminist themes; which is exactly why it is on our to watch list girls!, as it reduces its female protagonist, Jane, to a self-sacrificing bridesmaid whose happiness is entirely dependent on finding romantic validation through marriage.
While Jane’s journey through this movie is ultimately about learning to prioritize her own desires and find her own voice, the narrative still does a good job at reinforcing the idea that a woman’s worth is tied to marriage and romantic fulfillment, rather than her independence or self-worth.
Our girl Jane’s recurring embarrassment about being a perpetual bridesmaid is a central part of her character, reflecting her deep seated insecurity and the societal pressure women often feel to achieve traditional milestones like marriage. Her shame isn’t just about the number of dresses it’s a symptom of feeling overlooked or “stuck” in a role that doesn’t align with her personal desires...Which can feel very relatable for a modern female audience.
All in all this is a feel good, good girl movie and I give it a solid 3 out of 5.
