Ballad of the Windfish

Day 2 of our magical trip. For the first time ever I’m finally in a half decent spot for World of Color.

I made it past the DSA checkpoint. Good thing all I was smuggling was 40 water bottles.

I came here for the first time about 8 years ago and loved every minute- despite remembering almost nothing. I was just happy to be with my new wife and looking forward to Disneyland. Here we are again and now I get to being my girls along. Time to cheer for the Blue Pirate!

I want to wish a Happy Fathers Day to all my fellow wizards and warlocks, friends and familiars. As you ponder the orb today remember not to let the goblins get you down. The great secrets of the universe are yours to explore, and for all you magical fathers out there I wish you and your kin a good evening. Raising your family is the second greatest magic you will ever perform.

The year is 2023. When this game came out I played it at my cousin’s house for six hours straight from Destiny Islands to Olympus. I didn’t have my own memory card so I couldn’t copy the save. I would not touch the game again for several years, around the release of KH2.

For me personally there was nothing particularly life-changing about the series. I thought they were very fun very good games but that was about it. Loved them even, but did not consider them essential to my childhood.

Then I got married.

Kingdom Hearts was one of our biggest shared interests. There was this perfect overlap of my love of JRPGs and Kista’s love of Disney that made them something special to us as a couple and now as a family.

These days Kingdom Hearts 1 is old enough to drink. It’s hard to believe that we would keep coming back to it time and time again but here we are. It’s comfort food. It reminds us of when things were simpler, and shares the beautiful message that no matter how deep the darkness the light will always prevail.

I look forward to my girls growing up playing these games and learning to have courage and strong hearts.

It just makes me happy.
