Hello!

“…Now, Mallory- No one was going to bring up my eyebrows. They’re’s no need to be worked up about it.”

“Hold on, I got a notification.”

“Oh, Saturday is better for me! I’m available at any time. As for the payment-” Richard shrugged. “That’s absolutely alright! He’s fifteen, he’ll benefit more from the experience itself. It wont be an issue.”

Honestly, this was all easier than expected. He was expecting to need to hassle more or something, but he was glad that Georgie is going to be able to get that position he oh-so desperately wants!

“Now, will this all start immediately after I come to do papers?”

     “Great! Then how about Saturday morning at 10 am,” as he decides it, he’s frantically searching Gwen’s desk for a pen or pencil to jot it down.

     Taking the nearest paper-like surface, he scribbles the time down on the manila folder. The smile never leaves his face as he thinks about how excited Georgie will be with this little surprise.

“That’s better than nothing! Thank you again for helping my son out. He really enjoys it at camp, and I think that this experience will help him get more out there!” It was almost like he ignored the whole ‘we probably shouldn’t do this’ part of the conversation.

“Well, if we are done here, I’ll see you on Saturday at 10am!”

A sly smirk spread across Richard’s features. He didn’t even really care that David got his last name wrong, everything was going into motion, and that was great!

“Really? Excellent! I’m sure Georgie would appreciate that very much. Now, is there anything that I need to do to help this become official? Or do you just need Georgie? Like I said, I’m not very far from the camp, and my schedule is flexible.”

     “Well since he’s not an adult, there are a few things we’ll need you to sign too. Weekends are our free days, so does Saturday or Sunday work okay with you?”

      Though David was elated with this new arrangement, something wasn’t quite sitting right. Perhaps it was the suddenness of it all that made the whole thing feel surreal? Or perhaps it’s because he was making this discussion without Gwen to discuss it with? 

     She’ll appreciate more hands, I’m sure! he reassures himself. 

     Whatever the case may be, he’s moving forward with it. If Georgie thinks he’s going to have a much better time here at camp as a CIT, then by golly who’s he to deny him?

“Oh, really? That’s a shame.  I mean, I’m fairly close to the camp if you need me to sign any papers.” Richard sat up.

“Though, I do understand If that isn’t possible. Like I said, it’s just a shame. Georgie was awfully ecstatic about the concept of potentially becoming a CIT. He talked a lot about working beside you, David. The kid talks about you a lot, more than I thought he would ever talk about a person..”  The man spun in his chair a little, his expression not changing too much. Not that it mattered, it wasn’t like he was talking to David in person.

     Calloused fingers sift through sharpied names along disorganized camper files. Just when they grace the file with the name ‘Adams, Georgie’, they freeze as Richard divulges in Georgie’s excitement for the position, and how greatly he thinks of the counselor.

     David could insist that the teen wait for next summer to apply for the position, but then he thinks about how Georgie would take the news. He was already so shy with everyone, and even though he was apparently more comfortable with David than he seems, David can’t help but worry about shooting down the kid’s confidence, not to mention WILLINGNESS to pursue a higher involvement in camp.

     “Gosh, he’s really enthusiastic about it, huh?” he pulls out Georgie’s file and sets it down on the desk, opening it to have a look at the camper’s form. David leans against the desk, tapping his fingers against the old wood surface in heavy contemplation.

     “Well, golly, Mr. Adams, we’d love to have him on the Camp Campbell team if that’s what he really wants. I mean, not that being a CIT isn’t fun, but I’d encourage him to at least finish the rest of the summer enjoying his time as a camper before moving up.”

Ah, David! That was the head of the camp. Or at least…from what he’s heard. Probably the best person to get into contact with! 

“Hello, David! I’m Richard. I have an inquiry regarding my son, Georgie Adams.” Richard leaned back in his chair as he continued to speak. 

“You see, he’s been veeery interested in the camp. We’ve been talking to each other, and I thought that maybe it would be a great experience for him to potentially become a counselor in training. He recently turned 15, and I thought that now would be the perfect time for him to try his hand at it! How possible would that be?” 

     Oh! It was a parent! David relaxes, knowing he can handle a parent better than any government official.

     “Oh, yes sir! How can I help?” 

     His smile only seems to widen as Richard goes on about how much Georgie enjoys it here, which is admittedly a surprise to the camp director but he’s too thrilled to question it. He nods along at Mr. Adams’ inquiry, the high from the compliments still buzzing in his head that he hadn’t quite processed all of the words.

“Oh, really? That’s a shame.  I mean, I’m fairly close to the camp if you need me to sign any papers.” Richard sat up.

After a few days of consideration, Richard had finally decided to make a move on the idea of making Georgie a CIT. While he didn’t really talk to the teen about it, he figured that he wouldn’t mind! 

Dialing the number he found online onto his phone, he waited for a counselor to pick up. He was hoping that someone higher up or someone at least someone useful would pick up.

Now, he would go talk to someone in person, but he figured that he shouldn’t head over uninvited. That wouldn’t be very professional of him! Instead, he sat at his desk, his phone pressed against his face.

     As the landline suddenly sprung to life, David jumped in his seat, startled by the sound. The camp number wasn’t often used nowadays that it was so easy to mistake it for wall-decor. He rises from his bed-side and quickly stumbles over to phone.

Ah, David! That was the head of the camp. Or at least...from what he’s heard. Probably the best person to get into contact with!
