I do not open this prop box very often, and it's been running for a couple years now ๐ I tend to throw in everything I don't want to throw away immediately (almost everything). Except, it's been pretty much full for a while, so I just let it do it's thing. Most of all I keep it undisturbed because of the live spaghnum moss that had revived on it's own. It's growing happily ๐ Other than that, there's mostly Golden Pothos in there, as well as a few of it's cultivars, along with a couple variegated Epipremnum pinnatums and apparently a million variegated Syngoniums ๐ aaaand a corner with String of Hearts that's surviving for a couple years now but isn't totally happy in there. Maybe it's gotten too dark with how much stuff is in there, but I'm surprised it doesn't mind the conditions all that much.
That aside, I'm having a thrips infestation in the rest of my apartment currently that I don't have the (health) resources to deal with, so many of my plants aren't looking their best unfortunately. This has been going for quite a while already, but I hope at some point I'll get to it ๐ ๐ฅฒ Surprisingly, the marantas are looking the healthiest and happiest, it's like nothing is happening at all. The pothoses are rolling their eyes at me, but apart from that they're dealing. Leaves just don't look very nice anymore. I still love them, they're champs ๐ฅบ๐
It's funny that the online tropical plant community - a community that basically only came into existence during Covid - has already splintered into several microcommunities with distinctly different characteristics. Let me stereotype them for you:
Monstera People: The Monstera deliciosa is the archetypical pandemic houseplant, so you think these guys would be the chillest. Incorrect. Monstera people love nothing more than to scour the garden centers of the world for the most tortured, fucked up, barely-viable Monstera they can imagine. This one has no chlorophyll and looks like it went through a blender? Perfection. They literally call themselves 'sport hunters'. Approach with extreme caution.
Philodendron People: Gatcha Enthusiast behaviour. Gotta catch 'em all. Aa philodendron person will spend hours explaining the minute differences between two plants that look basically the same, and they will expect you to listen. One of those plants cost 400 dollars. They will expect you to understand. Also come in the Moss Pole Guy varient, which is basically just pokemon training in real life.
Anthurium People: Eugenicists. Anthuriums hybridize quite easily, unlike everything else on this list, so it's possible for people to cook up their own unique variety in their own home if they're so inclined. This is the sort of power with which most people should not be trusted. They'll be measuring sinus curvature with callipers any day now.
Hoya People: Control Freaks. Hoyas can look nice, but on some level they are plants for people who don't like plants. Every Leaf is Sacred. Nothing must ever change. This one grew two inches last year and it's throwing off the whole display. You wonder if they wouldn't secretly be happier with artificial plants.
Alocasia People: These are the grindset side-hustle guys. They just won't stop talking about how it makes total sense to spend 500 bucks on a two-leaf plant that will probably survive, you know, if you keep it in a hermetically sealed box and pH balance your water enough and never look at it, because once you get it to start making corms you can sell them for a steady stream of passive income that definitely isn't undermined by the fact that the only people who will buy those corms from you are also just doing it to eventually sell corms.
Syngonium People: Stoners. It's the only explanation for those varietal names.
Epipremnum/Pothos People: This is my plant :) He's green :)
Monsteras are going crazy with the roots ๐ Kinda not equipped for repots, but I guess they're both due. Will have to find them some bigger pots.
But the albo has made such a cute new leaf, too! ๐ฅฐโค๏ธ Thai Con is doing more roots, but that's fine. Counting on it growing slower tbh XD
Plants are a friend you can grow

I have to get rid of that large bag of cheap potting mix I got myself a while ago. It's spewing fungus gnats like a volcano and
I didn't know new shoots of the Silver Band came in with this blush ๐ฅบ๐ so prettyyyyyy
Edit: noticed another one and added that too! There's a third on the way also, but that will need a couple more days.
Second leaves on these new vines are unrolling and I'm delighted they still have a bit of blush to them ๐ There's also a 4th new shoot there. The 3rd one didn't have any pink on it, just like the propagations I recently potted up. No idea yet what the conditions are for the blush to appear, but if I ever find out I'll try my best to meet it. It just looks incredible, I love it so much!
Went to pick up med refills for my pets yesterday and nearby is a garden center, soooo I guess I'm owning my first hoya now ๐ Not the one I'm really after (that would be the Hoya polyneura in just green... hoping to find a cutting in a marketplace somewhere since it's never in the shops), but this one is reeeaaaally pretty and cute. It's a Hoya krohniana 'Super Silver'. In general at this point I don't really care for most Hoyas, but this one did speak to me a lot.
And I had to pick up the Syngonium Pixie too, because it stays relatively small and has a more compact growth pattern which I like. It's CUTE. I guess I suddenly have five (5) different Syngoniums now ๐ ๐ (erythrophyllum, wendlandii, regular podophyllum, p. albo, and now the p. pixie) Maybe I'll stop with them once I can find an aurea. Now that spring is coming I am keeping my eyes open online... ๐

Look at that, the first slitted leaf since I bought it ๐ฅบ๐โจ and the variegation is also back to what it was before. It's nice and balanced again and it makes me so happy!

omg I love my plants so much holy shit
Update on the PLNTS order, 3 weeks after repotting
By now they're still in the prop box, but I kept it permanently open now for a while and I think so far everyone has adjusted to the regular humidity in my living room (about 60% currently which is a bit crazy, but I'm having issues with too much humidity this winter). At least the plants love it haha. Anyway!
โฌ๏ธ Syngonium wendlandii is doing great! Pushing out the first new leaf since it arrived. Looking fantastic!
โฌ๏ธ Calathea/ Goeppertia warscewiczii had lost it's grow point/ emerging leaf due to cold during shipping, but is also pushing out a brand new grow point already, so I'm very happy about that!
โฌ๏ธ Philodendron melanochrysum also had lost the grow point in the same way, but otherwise it's doing great as far as I can tell. No new growth yet, but it's hopefully just working on roots. Stunning plant, I love it.
โฌ๏ธ Anthurium warocqueanum has lost all the bigger leaves, but the smaller ones seem to adjust now. I put it into a net pot for aeration, but it dries out VERY quickly and I need to check on it more often. Was already very thirsty today when all the others still are pretty wet.
โฌ๏ธ Anthurium villenaorum hasn't done a whole lot at all except for acquiring a few crispy spots here and there, but hopefully it's still just establishing itself.
โฌ๏ธ Pilea Moon Valley also has lost all leaves due to shipping, but it still kept all the teeny tiny mini ones, so I'm hoping it's going to be fine. This was the one I was most worried about because the root ball was really really cold and wet during shipping.
โฌ๏ธ Anthurium crystallinum has lost all but one leaf and that one has flopped over to the side and is a bit crispy at some edges, but we'll see how it's going to do in the future. Not confident to make any predictions, but I hope for the best.
Alocasia heterophylla had pretty much died at the time of repotting ๐ but there was one of these seed things in the soil and that's what I potted up. No idea what I'm doing here tbh, but I'm imagining it's going to take time for it to do anything even in the best of circumstances.
I'm tempted to think my Thai Constellation likes the new substrate ๐ Orchid bark, chunky pumice, coco coir and a bit of perlite. I'm having almost all of my pothos in this mix too and they seem to like it.
Ok this is absolutely CRAZY. Look at her roots today, a mere 9 (NINE) DAYS later?! wtf lol
Just found this little gem at the effing grocery store XD for 4.99โฌ (including the pot and all, and it's not that small) and I mean I couldn't just leave her there, could I?? ๐ Much better genetics than the one I already have and for that price...?! Mayyyybe I'll propagate this to see if I can bring the larger patches back.

Recently I placed a very spontaneous order at PLNTS.com, because they had a baby Calathea warscewiczii on sale and I've been hoping to find one for pretty long now ๐ฅบโจ Another one from my wishlist was the Syngonium wendlandii, and since the aurea variegata was out of stock I got this one instead.
All of the others you can see here were from a surprise baby sad plant box and NOT ONE of these baby plants was looking especially sad?! (at least before they were shipped...) Tbh they seemed to me pretty much the same or even better as the other two plants that I ordered. I've heard that about these boxes before and wanted to give it a try. Anyway, if I did my identification correctly they sent me baby plants of a total value of 83โฌ (EIGHTY THREE EUROS) and these boxes are about 20โฌ ๐ณ I was VERY impressed. In that regard I would definitely recommend these boxes. The only thing I was concerned about was the shipping, although that was partly my own fault. I forgot to check my weather forecast when I ordered and the first day of their shipping journey it was below freezing (at least in my location in Germany), but since the Netherlands are located a bit more to the north compared to my own location I would assume it was the same over there. PLNTS does state that they only send out plant mail if day temps are above freezing, but I can only hope that this was actually the case ๐ The entire box was cold when I got it. There was a heat pack in there, but it was already cold. All the plants were cold too, which did concern me. I tried to handle/ touch them as little as possible and just placed them in the recovery box and makeshift pots so they don't fall over. I did take pics, though. It's been a few days now and almost all of them still look pretty good, though, so I hope they'll be fine! ๐ค๐ค๐ค
So we have here out of the sad plant box:
Philodendron melanochrysum
Anthurium crystallinum
Anthurium warocqueanum
Anthurium villenaorum
Alocasia heterophylla
Pilea 'Moon Valley' (not pictured; this was sopping wet and thus had the coldest root ball of all of them. I didn't want to place it in the box so it can dry out a bit, but it's not looking very good right now, leaves are crisping up and droopy๐ซค but we'll see if it survives)
And that's the start of this little adventure! I probably never would have bought any of these plants on my own, but I wanted to see which plants I get and if anything in there would do well in my apartment, and also if any of them would grow on me (pun not intended lol). It's feeling a bit weird to have all of these plants I've been seeing on YouTube for years in my own collection now haha. So far I'm pretty happy about the melanochrysum in particular, it DOES look stunning irl. The Alocasia is also right up my alley color wise, and the Anthuriums are all rather glittery irl which I also like. It's going to be interesting! It's still not been a full week yet since they arrived, but once I'm positive they're not suffering from cold damage I'm going to give them proper pots and everything. Until then, fingers crossed and I will update!! ๐๐ค
So vibrant! ๐๐๐
