I wrote this for another site. I’m rather proud of this. Written from beginning of game until Cardinal Forton’s death.
--- ----- ------
You always wanted to be the Shepherd.
Eager eyes absorb page by page of the Celestial Record until you memorized the entire book. You keep it on your person close to your heart. Someday you will see all those sights. Someday you would make new discoveries with Mikleo at your side. Someday you will bring seraphim and humans together. You’ve been preparing for this moment since you were a small child who got lost in the ruins.
The time has come. The Shepherd must arise.
”And so I will become the Shepherd!”
Ladylake. The Sacred Blade Festival. With Lailah’s blessing and the sacred blade in hand, you fight back the hellions that threaten the fair city. You’ve taken your first steps on your destined path. You have been set apart from birth. A human raised by seraphim. For what purpose are you raised for other than this?
Like water and fish - you cannot go on without him.
”This is our dream!”
You’re nervous. You want to protect your best friend, so you tell him not to be a sublord. When it’s you who needs protection. You who have never left your home before this day. You want to be strong. Your destiny is calling. And yet — you would be nothing without Mikleo.
War is on the horizon. Stay true to yourself. The rest will fall into place.
They expect you to lead the charge. A youth with no battlefield experience and no desire to kill. All because you have supernatural powers that could demolish the army of Rolance. You can’t bear to see the conflict. It chills your bones. You are warned to stay away, but your heart aches to help the people.
Chaos rises. The Lord of Calamity looms over the battlefield.
You get involved for a mercenary the military men could not care about. You remember everyone. Every single life that touches yours is held close to your heart. The Calamity appears. The final boss on your quest as the Shepherd. It can end now. He is too powerful. Run away and understand your enemy.
Blind to everyone you hold dear - you find enlightenment on your path.
The Calamity causes you to lose sight of your friends. You've never gone 'blind' to the seraphim before. You feel lonely and cold like something that kept you warm all this time has vanished. Relief passes over you as they reappear before you. You gain a new ally who causes you to realize you need someone (a human foil) who sees with human eyes like you. Realism to balance your idealism. This discovery gives you sight of your true goal - to find the shrines of spiritual power.
Don’t you worry, child. Death is a natural part of life.
You conquer your first trial. You get involved in matters you do not understand. You continue to naïvely believe you can save everyone. Death becomes the only option when confronted with an enemy too far gone and warped in her personal and universal justice. As Zaveid said: “Death is a salvation … for some.” Your human partner and the Scattered Bones take the fall for the woman’s death. Though you did not do the killing blow - you still feel her blood on your hands.
”This is the only answer I could find. Sorry.”
You feel numb. You’ve never taken a human life before. You’ve hunted animals only to thank the land for its bounty. Hellions were to be purified and returned to the creatures they once were. You thought you could save her.
The stars will light the way. Trust in their unfailing light.
A new world lies before you. New stars to guide your way. New discoveries to be written in the journal you keep at your side. You have faith that you and Mikleo can make a difference in a world this diverse and different.
