It was a strange thing when someone went MIA out here, because you never knew the true REASON for their departure right away——-unless, of course, you saw it with your own eyes. & it was safe to say that Joe had feared the worst each time he’d accompanied Gene from town to HQ, transporting sick and injured men from the line while also trying to keep himself somewhat in the loop of things. While the advantage of this job was fairly obvious ( not getting shot at by the Germans was a goddamned god send ) , the disadvantage was that he was ALONE———&Renee disappearing only heightened that sense of loneliness when he found he didn’t have anyone to talk to except the captured Germans and officers who requested things day in &day out. “What do you mean you were HURT?
