I’ve touched on it before, but I fear my definition of “stylish” is likely very different from yours. Whereas most of the iGentry see an inextricable link between style and dress, I feel the waters are a bit more muddied than they might appear. It’s (honestly) very easy to be well dressed or have great taste. It’s much harder to be truly stylish.

Furthermore, I feel to truly grasp one’s style you must have more to go on than a picture. While there are many who photograph well or dress well, I find it hard to know what is artificial and what is natural. After all, how long can one honestly chain smoke with their foot propped against a wall? A truly stylish person will command a room and not just a fame-hungry photographer’s lens.

Lastly, I think it’s ill-advised to have a single, chief source of inspiration. Some of my favorite dressers wouldn’t come close to having enough personality to be as stylish as some of the worst-dressed people I’ve ever met. However, when you combine facets of each – one’s penchant for a uniform, another’s utter disdain for the opinion of others, someone’s comfort-fueled impulses – you can get a perfect storm of inspiration. By observing and then appreciating details, you get a much better idea of what appeals to you. It’s easy to lose the trees in the forest.

So now that I’ve done a sufficiently horrible job of answering your question, I’ll say I have no idea. There are some people that I know personally or have met on occasion that immediately come to mind when I think “stylish,” but I’d never give any one of them priority over the other. I admire them equally for a sense of style that is so accidental and natural.
