“Mend it?”

“Yeah, Harrington. Mend it. Sew the tear back up, make it good as new.”

And Steve is so amazed cause the thought never even occurred to his silly little rich boy brain not that his parents would even approve of wearing visibly mended clothes because appearances and what would people say?

And so Eddie invites Steve over and they sit out on the sofa in front of his trailer and Eddie pulls out his sewing kit (it’s an old wooden cigar box that belonged to Wayne, & it’s full of safety pins, needles, stray buttons, and a few spools of thread) and he talks Steve through every step, showing him how to do it, so he’ll be able to do it himself if it happens again

Cutting the thread to the right length so you have enough (but not too much that it tangles), threading the needle, pinning the tear shut, and then making careful, neat stitches on the inside of the sweater that Steve is amazed to find are practically invisible once it’s turned right side round again

“See,” Eddie says when he’s tied off and woven in the threads “Good as new,” and, yeah, it almost is but Steve can just make out the mend where the tear used to be, and that’s mostly by feel because the dark navy fabric hides it well in the dusky evening light
