The rest of the states look at Florida in the same way the rest of the world looks at the entire US
i’ve lived abroad for four years, and this is perhaps the best way to describe it
Manzanita, OR
shot with an Olympus OM-1 on 35mm film
My PIN number to this day is my second grade best friends birthday. There are people I don’t talk to anymore whose families are still in my prayers. There are shirts I wear to bed from exes of 8 years ago who are married now with kids. And I haven’t found a macaroni salad recipe better than my college boyfriend’s moms’. Our lives are made up of so many people and when people become parts of our lives, some parts remain long after they leave. And in the same exact way, it’s comforting to know there are so many lives you’re still a part of that you have no idea about.
it’s so comforting to know that my friend and i influenced each other so much - she began to value herself and her priorities more over the guys she was with, i became much more confident. my old flat still makes cold brew, chicken wild rice soups, and loves chocolate chip cookies. my current flatmates now make green goddess dip all the time, one is super into peanut butter cookies. my old friend from high school wears my clothes that i left her.
i have lived in four different countries, but all of this is so comforting to me.
the uncanny valley between “this academic article doesn’t make sense because i’m an idiot” and “this academic article doesn’t make sense because the author is an idiot”

@ every white canadian, european, and austrialian who are looking at what is going on in the United States and patting yourselves on the back because ‘it’s not like that here’. It is like that in your country. Anti blackness and police brutality exist in your country just as much as it does the usa. To say otherwise is willful ignorance and turning a blind eye to abuse. Stop pushing your racism out of sight and fucking deal with it
also it should be noted, especially in europe - it’s not even always about the color of your skin (though it most certainly is in some instances). things are different than in the us. eastern europeans face a lot of discrimination. and the treatment of migrants is abhorrent in cyprus
i come from a really, really small town in minnesota, where there were almost no people of color. we weren’t really educated about the racial disparities that our state held.
when i went abroad? i’ve used being from minnesota as far as defense mechanism. like, the us is really fucked up indeed, but minnesota is one of the nicer states.
that illusion has come to an end. yes, minnesota has some good aspects. but the institutional racism is so intensely embedded in the culture and systematic police violence happens on a scale not seen in most places outside the midwest. it is now on display for the whole world to see, as it should be. and it’s absolutely heartbreaking to watch my state suffer so intensely from racism, violence, and exploitation of outsiders. it’s also heartbreaking to know that three and a half hours away, i lived my entire life there completely oblivious to this. the disparity in the midwest is similar to south africa, from an outside european perspective.
i was never really proud of the united states to begin with, so not being proud to american was natural to me. but like, i needed to have some sort of way to differentiate myself? i don’t identify with the places that my parents come from. i don’t identify with my hometown at all. i didn’t really identify with american culture. i’m not going to be that american who after living abroad identifies as european, and in some ways, i know i’ll never be european. so, that leaves being minnesotan.
but i can’t say i’m proud to be minnesotan now, because that implies that i’m proud to come from a society that was deeply institutional racist. it’s also embarrassing i didn’t realize that before. another factor in the equation is that my parents will soon move away. and even having this be in my thought process now is yet another indication of my privilege.
anyways, it’s a weird time to be from minnesota.
being born in the late 90′s is a really weird time because our coming of age is/was so tied into the expansion of personal technology? like for so many of us the transition from getting your first flip phone to smartphones wasn’t just a technology shift, it was part of growing up. and it created this really weird timeline where new technologies were being created right as we entered the right age market to use them, so now we all know intuitively how to use snapchat or the social context of emoji use or whatever but we can also remember childhoods spent (almost) entirely outside and offline. like you get all the disillusionment of the older millennial generation except now with the stress of spending your adolescence measuring yourself against others on social media and it’s really fucking confusing
you put it into words
Country calling codes
One of the most healing things I’ve strove (striven?) to do in my life is viewing sex as just another thing people do, among a host of other things like eating and pooping and playing with cats.
Our entire society, feminists and puritans alike, pushes the idea that sex is uniquely powerful and dangerous, capable of inflicting The Worst Trauma or the Highest Fulfillment, and that’s…just flat out untrue. Other experiences can cause similar trauma: violence, disasters, war, instability. Other experiences can result in transcendent pleasure: trance states, live music, non-sexual intimacy, tattoos.
I think this is where the disconnect in perception about sex positivity comes from, because the phrase itself makes people who already view sex as being uniquely powerful think sex positivity means viewing sex as uniquely good, when actually…it’s mostly about taking sex off that pedestal. Normalizing sex. Making it into just another thing people do. Because that’s the first step in making sure people can engage with sex on their own terms in a healthy way.
Taking sex off its cultural pedestal was the thing that allowed me to overcome the deeply-instilled shame I developed from being raised within Christian purity culture, and from being queer, and from existing as a woman. I think a failure to do that, in feminist circles, often leads to an overblowing of the (very real) harm that sex has the potential to do at the exclusion of other problems facing women and other marginalized groups, which often leads to more shaming rhetoric - just rhetoric that shames different people for different reasons.
Sex is not the enemy and it’s not our savior. It’s just one more thing people can do with their bodies.

This one takes a little bit more effort, but I have found it to be very rewarding. Try air drying your laundry! For people living in established homes, your clothes dryer is the appliance that consumes the most energy after your refrigerator. If you have the necessary space, you can use clothespins and clotheslines, which pretty inexpensive. Nowadays there are both electric and gas clothes dryers. The link at the bottom provides some more information about the differences between both of them, including expenses.
For college students living in an apartment or dorm, try using something similar to what’s in the picture at the top! From personal experience, each drying load on average costs about $1.25-1.50. This energy-efficient way can save both money and the environment. Yes, it does take about a full day to dry, and if you’re in a hurry, this might not be convenient for you. Even if you’re not able to do this every time you do laundry, every little bit helps. Give it a shot :).

Drying machines account for one third of energy usage of major household appliances.
I finally got one a little bit ago! Woohoo!
If you’ve got the space/means go for one of these, you’ll fit more of a load on it. Growing up we always owned a minimum of two of these so the entire load could be hung up for air drying.
Don’t be ashamed to stick ‘em outside, if you’ve got an outside, depending on where & when it’ll cut down drying time to 3-4 hours, and sun dried clothes smell awesome
When hanging clothes outside, do hang ‘em up inside out so you aren’t color fading them in the sun
Give everything a good shake before bringing back inside
You don’t need a rack to air dry, use your clothes hangers to hang wet shirts and pants in doorways, and on your shower rod, and/or pretty much anything else that’s tall enough
leave at least 4 inches in between
the less space there is the longer it’ll take to dry, and you risk getting that smell you get if you forget your laundry in the washing machine for too long
you will likely scuff up your door frames, unless you’re super careful putting them up and taking them down
I personally recommend asking for the clothes hangers every time you purchase shirts or pants because they allow for more flexibility in finding places to hang them than most of the clothes hangers available for purchase at reasonable prices
Also, doesn’t hurt to throw your clothes in the dryer for 5 or so minutes, if you’ve got one, after you’ve finished air drying
We always did this after hanging outside just in case (dust/critters)
Certain fabrics will feel stiff after air drying and a couple minutes in a dryer will undo that.
It’s always a balancing game of doing what’s right for you/the environment/your wallet.

I put some of the clothes in the dryer on air fluff or low heat for a few minutes before I hang the clothes to air dry because it takes the wrinkles out but still significantly reduces my use of the dryer.
I love air drying my clothes! Saves me roughly $150 a year
I air dry my clothes every summer. I find it very therapeutic. My mom enjoys it too, it reminds her of her mom.
this is kind of funny. in europe, at least in germany (not in denmark) and cyprus having a clothes dryer is unheard of. it’s not a hip thing or something for sustainability, it is just something you do
Distribution and expansion of olive trees over the Mediterranean Basin
Confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Mar. 25, 2020.
cyprus is under lockdown...is it strange that I am grateful?
like it will be a pain to text for permission to go on a run. idk how that will work, because i can only stay in my neighborhood. and that means interval running, which doesn't work well with my phone.
but it was either these measures now or later. i prefer now, less cases, rather than these measures later and longer.
like, i know it will be longer than three weeks most likely. but cyprus is not at the point where should last longer than eight weeks, and i would have june at least.
cyprus, a tiny mediterranean country faced with a buffer zone and very complicated situation, has a very high level of testing per capita. there are only two confirmed cases on the island that are not from someone who was abroad or was in contact with someone from a known case. you can still get most ingredients at the grocery store, as well as tp. you can’t even get tp where i come from.
i live in a nice house with good roommates, in in a beautiful neighborhood. the weather is that of a mediterranean island. one of my roommates is quite fun to cook with and likes to cook with me. i finally got so bored that i could work on my thesis.
so yeah, it really could be a whole lot worse. i’m glad that i am in a program where i am allowed to stay where i am. lockdowns are inevitable, better to be on an isolated mediterranean island with lemon trees, and proactive rather than reactive measures.
Possibly unpopular opinion? There’s a thin line between anti-elitism-in-academia and anti-intellectualism, and tumblr really walks it sometimes.
Anti-elitism:
Criticizing class barriers to getting into academia
Criticizing lack of resources to help students with physical or mental health issues
Calling out racism and sexism in academia
Calling out people who treat others badly for being less educated
Calling out people who believe academia is the only way to gain knowledge
Anti-intellectualism:
Being opposed to academia as an institution
Acting like everyone in academia is a rich and privileged white man
Acting like their opinions shouldn’t matter because of this
Assuming that any specialised language exists only to make things difficult for a layperson to understand and couldn’t possibly be necessary in order to explain a complicated topic
Assuming that if a specialist can’t explain what they’re doing to a non-specialist in five minutes then what they do is nonsense
Shaming people for taking pride in their academic and intellectual achievements
Am I crazy for thinking that tumblr sometimes veers towards the second?
like someone i met recently said that university is a scam, right when i met them
there are certainly issues with higher education not being effective, an inflation of degrees, not enough people in positions without a uni degree ... but it is not an issue that can be simplified.
i don’t know my exact career path, but there is a good chance it will involve academia and research. there is merit to the scientific process and analytical power, and it shouldn’t be dismissed. nor should understanding it be out of reach, regardless of one’s background or profession.
