He looked the same. More tired, maybe, a little more worn around the edges. It had been maybe a year, a little more since she’d last seen him. Those freckles, that chipped piece of his ear.
For a second, she was back on a stool at The Grinder, watching him sketch out some tech on a napkin, dunk and giggly while he tried to explain to her his current issue.
“Robbie?”
“Jesus—Emma.”
He sounded—he sounded fucking wrecked. Her eyes were immediately wet.
Before she could even breathe, his arms were around her, slamming into her so hard and fast they stumbled back a few steps, tripping over each other before finding their footing.
“I thought you were dead,” he gasped. “Emma, I thought you were dead.”
